Aussie fisherman searches for three-metre crocodile after 'half-done' spear attack

Yahoo07-03-2025
Disturbing video has captured the result of a 'brutal attack' on a three-metre saltwater crocodile that left it with a broken spear protruding from its head. Queensland authorities confirmed on Friday they're investigating the incident which they say has likely left the animal in 'extreme pain'.
The fisherman who filmed the animal told Yahoo News the sight was 'very distressing'. He'd been exploring remote coastline at Cape Tribulation in early February when he made the discovery.
'I'm all for hunting things. But I don't agree with a half-done job. This was clearly an attack,' he said.
It's one of a string of incidents involving attacks on crocodiles in the area, including the beheading of a large male at nearby Cow Bay in 2023. While they have not been officially linked, locals with knowledge of the area who requested anonymity believe they know who is responsible.
Community Representation of Crocodiles has worked with Crime Stoppers to raise funds and provide rewards for crimes against wildlife in Queensland.
'We want to remind the public that these acts of cruelty are serious wildlife crimes, and those responsible should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law to educate the community that there's no tolerance,' spokesperson Dan Kemp told Yahoo.
Simon Booth from Queensland's Department of Environment (DETSI) confirmed the incident is being investigated. 'If not captured and assessed, it will most likely die a slow and agonising death,' he said.
Saltwater crocodiles in Queensland are threatened with extinction due to widespread hunting in the 1970s and their numbers are yet to recover. They are protected across the state and those caught harming them face fines of up to $36,292.
'We are disgusted by this shocking incident, and it is disheartening to know that people can be so cruel,' Booth said.

🚨 Call for answers after poison found buried in rare predator's habitat
The fisherman who filmed the video says as large predators, crocodiles have played an important role in stopping development across the region's coastline.
'I see crocodiles as keeping the whole area safe. They deserve our respect. If they weren't here there'd be skyscrapers built across Far North Queensland,' he said.
'Crocodiles keep it raw, and protect its natural beauty.'
Since he first spotted the crocodile with the 15cm spear in its head on February 10, he's been searching for it without any luck.
"I've been back down there multiple times and I'm not sure where it is now," he said.
Anyone with information about the attack on the crocodile is urged to contact DETSI on 1300 130 372.

Caravan repairer warns over hair-raising but 'common' trick after customer's 'crazy story'

Caravan owners are being warned of a "simple" trick that can be used against them if thieves try to steal gear from outside their van. One caravan repair expert told Yahoo News it's a well-known tactic used to lock travellers inside their caravans. Luke Weber, owner of Affordable Caravans Service & Repairs which sells and repairs vans, explained he first heard of the trick over six years ago when a customer explained they had their camping gear stolen right in front of them, when thieves used a piece of paper to disable the latch lock on their caravan door. The travellers, trapped inside, could apparently do nothing but watch as their belongings were taken away. The majority of caravan doors manufactured from 2000 onwards have a lock mechanism involving a latch, with the latch needing to jut outwards in order to open the door. However, a metal ring also found on the door handle — which is used to hook the door open when required — can be used to prevent the door from opening. As demonstrated by Luke in a recent video, something as innocuous as a piece of paper can be used to block the space where the latch juts out, preventing the system from unlocking. The "crazy story" he relayed from a customer detailed how they had their camping possessions ransacked "in the middle of the night ... and they couldn't get out of the caravan," he said in the video. "It's very, very simple and it'll lock people in," Luke explained to Yahoo News. "I've been fixing caravans for a long time, and it has been well known for a long time that a thief can just use a sheet of paper, or even sticky tape, to stop those doors from opening. "It's such a common problem, people get their gear stolen in the middle of the night. People even get their barbecues taken and their fridges taken... They just have to sit in the caravan until it's over, then climb out a window or something." 👀 'Bizarre' moment caravan family's stay gatecrashed by 'best buddies' 😲 Council makes major caravan rule change to tackle housing crisis 📝 Van traveller shares best free camping spots as price hike looms Caravanners advised of 'easy fix' to avoid being locked inside Thankfully, there is an easy solution, Luke explained. "It's an easy fix, you just take the little metal ring off where people put the paper. It just clicks right off, and you can put it inside your caravan, and the problem is solved," he said. As the metal ring is simply a functional hook for keeping the door open, removing it doesn't impact the ability to lock the door, so caravanners can still safely lock themselves inside overnight. Aussie running for Boston suburb mayor says there's ‘no chance' he'll change his name despite Jeffrey Epstein comparison

He's not name-dropping. An Australian man named Geoffrey Epstein is running for mayor in a Massachusetts town — and he rejects any comparisons to the convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, according to a report. Epstein, who goes by 'Geoff,' said he wasn't afraid of the overt homophonic resemblance his name bears to that of the notorious, dead sex trafficker. Geoff Epstein for Mayor/Facebook 'That other one is a dead American and I am a live Aussie,' Epstein, who is seeking office in Framingham, a Boston suburb, told HuffPost Tuesday. 'But, of course, there is all the horrifying criminality and darkness of the other guy,' the aspiring pol said, adding, 'I have lived my life trying to be straight up and improving things.' Advertisement Epstein said there was 'no way' he would change his name to avoid association with the degenerate criminal, who officials said committed suicide in a Manhattan lockup in 2019. 'I like my name and I am proud of my family,' he said, adding his family proudly fought in World War II. The Aussie, who noted he was born on September 11, further stands apart from his doppel-namer by way of holding a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, whereas Jeffrey Epstein dropped out of Cooper Union before attaining a degree. He is not the first politician to fight off associations with the infamous sex trafficker. It is what it is. Both [Jeffrey Epstein and Harvey Weinstein] are horrific,' the pol added.

Details of new Aussie road camera trial finally revealed

Improving safety and reducing deaths is a top priority for road authorities nationwide. But despite ambitious goals to reduce the road death toll to zero by 2050, data from the last 12 months reveals road deaths have reached a 15-year high. As authorities try new tactics and technology to deter dangerous drivers, a recent announcement to trial new mobile road safety cameras in Victoria sparked confusion among drivers. The Department of Justice and Community Safety did not reveal what was new about the technology, or what traffic offences were being monitored. A leading traffic lawyer described the information as "vague", saying it's a "problem for transparency and trust". RACV (Royal Automobile Club of Victoria) told Yahoo News it was seeking more information about the trial. Now, Serco, the company that operates and maintains traffic cameras in Victoria, has revealed new details about exactly what is on trial. A spokesperson told Yahoo News the trial, which began in selected Victorian suburbs on July 21, actually involves the trailers which carry the cameras. Serco reveals what is new about road safety camera trial The spokesperson told Yahoo News that mobile safety cameras "play an important role" in road safety in Victoria. Their main role is to promote and enforce safe driving behaviours that save lives on roads, she explained. "Serco's trusted partnership with the Victorian Government means we are continuously looking at improvements and innovation that enable us to deliver an exceptional service. "As part of this commitment, we are trialling new trailers for Road Safety Cameras," she said. The trial, which began on July 21, will carry on through to 2025 in select Victorian locations which are already used by current road safety camera operations. "The trial is exploring the use of trailers, utilising existing Road Safety Camera technology. No trailer camera fines will be issued as part of the trial," she said. "We are committed to continuing to work closely with the Victorian Government to help keep all road users safe." 🎥 Vandalised surveillance camera on Aussie road goes viral 📸 Drivers stumped by bizarre roadside surveillance camera spotted on road 🚘 Detail overlooked rollout of mobile and seatbelt detection cameras Victoria's ambitious goal to reduce road deaths After the trial, the department may consider integrating them into the mobile camera program and used for enforcement purposes. 'Victoria's road safety camera program plays a critical role in changing driver behaviour, reducing serious injuries and saving lives," the spokesperson said last week. 'That's why we're continuing to explore new locations and trial new equipment across the road network, to prevent crashes and deaths on our roads.' 'Every dollar received from road safety cameras goes to the Better Roads Victoria Trust, where it is spent on road restoration, road surface replacement, bridge strengthening and other road safety infrastructure improvements.' On its website, the department states that it regularly trials new technology, and drivers may notice some trials, while others will go unnoticed because they are simply software changes on existing cameras. The trailers will be present in the following suburbs: Tottenham Port Melbourne Toorak Caulfield South Heatherton Healesville Oaklands Junction During the trial, the cameras will not issue fines, but police will continue patrolling and enforce dangerous and risky road user behaviours. More information can be found about the trial here. Do you have a story tip? Email: newsroomau@ You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube.
