SG vs Inter Miami Club World Cup clash rekindles Messi's turbulent Paris stint

The Sun6 hours ago

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN'S triumphant UEFA Champions League victory last month marked a new era for the club, but their upcoming Club World Cup clash with Inter Miami this Sunday reopens old wounds. The reunion with Lionel Messi, now starring for the MLS side, reminds PSG fans of a period marked by unfulfilled expectations.
PSG's dominant 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final signaled their evolution under Luis Enrique, shifting from a star-studded squad to a cohesive, youthful team. This transformation came after the departures of Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappé, whose exits allowed the club to rebuild strategically.
When Messi arrived in Paris in 2021, hopes were sky-high. 'My dream is to win another Champions League, and I think I am in the ideal place to have that chance,' Messi said at his unveiling. Yet, despite flashes of brilliance, his two-year stint fell short. PSG regressed in Europe, exiting in the last 16 twice, a stark contrast to their previous semi-final and final appearances.
The Argentine's mammoth €30 million annual salary and the challenge of balancing his role alongside Neymar and Mbappé often left PSG disjointed. By the end, sections of the Parc des Princes crowd turned on him, questioning his commitment. Though he delivered 32 goals and 35 assists in 75 games, his impact was deemed insufficient.
French sports daily L'Equipe captured the sentiment: 'PSG have not been better than they were before because of him... and he seemed to have as much desire to play in Ligue 1 as he did to go to the dentist.'
Now, Messi seeks redemption in Atlanta, where his stunning free-kick last week propelled Inter Miami past Porto. PSG, meanwhile, aim to cement their global dominance. Miami coach Javier Mascherano hinted Messi might channel past frustrations: 'When he has something on his mind, he gives an extra effort.'
With pride and progression at stake, Sunday's clash promises high drama—will Messi haunt his former club, or will PSG's new-look squad prove they've moved on?

Palmeiras and Botafogo set to rekindle heated rivalry on global stage

PHILADELPHIA: In a nation where bitter football feuds typically simmer across generations, Botafogo and Palmeiras are poised to add another chapter to Brazil's explosive new rivalry when they meet in the last 16 of the Club World Cup on Saturday. The feud, which erupted in 2023, has seen dramatic twists both on and off the pitch. Palmeiras, spearheaded by teenage sensation Endrick, overturned a three-goal deficit to defeat Botafogo 4-3, a result that triggered the Rio club's collapse in the Brazilian championship race. Palmeiras subsequently clinched the league title, sparking tensions that spilled into public exchanges between club officials. Palmeiras president Leila Pereira called Botafogo's owner John Textor "an idiot" and suggested he should be "banned from Brazilian football" after the American alleged referee bias in favor of Palmeiras. The rivalry defies Brazil's traditional city-based football feuds, with Palmeiras hailing from Sao Paulo and Botafogo from Rio de Janeiro. Unlike the century-old feuds of Flamengo-Fluminense or Atletico-Cruzeiro, this cross-country animosity has evolved into a pressure-cooker dynamic, with each encounter carrying heightened stakes. Botafogo exacted revenge in the 2024 Copa Libertadores, eliminating Palmeiras in the round of 16 en route to claiming the continental title. When the two met again in the Brazilian league at Palmeiras' home ground, Botafogo won again and eventually secured a domestic and international double. Since that 2023 defeat, Botafogo have gone unbeaten against Palmeiras in five consecutive matches. Saturday's encounter at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field will test the limits of a rivalry that has transcended mere competition, with local commentators describing it as "collective catharsis" for fans and players alike. "It means a lot. The last few games between Botafogo and Palmeiras have been high-level and intense," defender Alex Telles told reporters on Friday. "It's a healthy rivalry for Brazilian football. It's great to see two Brazilian teams facing each other in the Club World Cup and also to have all four teams advancing (to the last 16)."

Monaco close in on Fati loan signing from Barca

MONACO: Barcelona forward Ansu Fati is expected to join French club Monaco on loan with an option to buy, sources close to the deal said Friday. The 22-year-old Spanish international passed his medical on Friday as Monaco and Barcelona agreed to a season-long loan deal with an €11 million fee (US$12.9 million) to make the move permanent. According to the same source, the contract will not be made official until July 1. Fati burst onto the scene at Barcelona aged 17, but has since failed to live up to initial high expectations. He made 11 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga champions last term, without finding the net. Fati spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Premier League club Brighton, where he scored four goals in 27 outings. With his expected arrival, Fati should become Monaco's third signing of the summer. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is slated to sign for the Ligue 1 side, following on from England international Eric Dier. Pogba was also undergoing a medical with the principality side on Friday. The 32-year-old 2018 World Cup winner is seeking a club after having his contract terminated by Juventus in March while serving an 18-month suspension for doping. The trio should be officially announced to the press on July 3. — AFP

Chelsea's Maresca praises Fernandez before Benfica Club World Cup clash

CHELSEA manager Enzo Maresca has praised midfielder Enzo Fernandez ahead of their Club World Cup last-16 clash against Benfica, the Argentinian's former club. Speaking to reporters in Charlotte, Maresca highlighted Fernandez's professionalism and growing influence in the team. 'I am very pleased with Enzo especially because first of all he is a nice and polite boy, and then with us since we started he has been working very well in every aspect on and off the pitch,' Maresca said. Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a then-British record fee of £107 million, has been instrumental this season. The 24-year-old contributed to 14 goals in 2025, including a crucial strike in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC in the Club World Cup group stage. 'This season he struggled a bit at the beginning to understand the way we want to play but (since) then he is doing fantastic also in terms of numbers, goals and assists,' Maresca added. Chelsea face Benfica on Saturday, a team they have beaten in all three previous competitive meetings. However, Maresca remains cautious after Benfica's impressive victory over Bayern Munich in the group stage. 'I think Benfica, not only in this competition, have always shown how big a club they are in Europe,' Maresca said. 'In the last game they beat Bayern so they showed what they can do.' A win would send Chelsea to Philadelphia for a quarter-final on July 4.
