Original story: Those waiting for a rocket launch do not have to wait much longer − a Falcon 9 rocket is planned to lift off tonight from Florida's Space Coast.
SpaceX plans to launch the Starlink 10-29 mission now at 11:37 p.m. July 29. Various factors, such as weather at the launch and booster landing locations could change timing. SpaceX states it has until 3:30 a.m. July 30 to launch during this window.
Lift off will be from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The rocket will travel on a northeast trajectory, meaning those north of the Space Coast could get great views of the bright rocket against the night sky.
The mission is the latest batch of 27 SpaceX's Starlink internet satellites, which deliver internet to customers in some of the most remote areas in the world.
No Space Coast sonic booms will follow the liftoff, as the rocket's first-stage will land on the Just Read the Instructions drone ship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

SpaceX Falcon 9 fueling now underway
Update 11:06 p.m.: Visual cues indicate Falcon 9 fueling procedures are now underway at Launch Complex 40, though SpaceX has yet to make an official announcement.
That means tonight's Starlink mission is now locked in to lift off at 11:37 p.m. without any countdown delays, or else the launch must be postponed.

Update 10:56 p.m.: Tonight's booster is flying for the 26th time.
Previous missions include 21 Starlink missions, CRS-24, Eutelsat HOTBIRD 13F, OneWeb 1, SES-18 and SES-19.
Liftoff is scheduled for 11:37 p.m.

Update 10:46 p.m.: Brevard County Emergency Management officials have activated the agency's launch operations support team ahead of SpaceX's upcoming Falcon 9 launch.
SpaceX Starship launch upcoming
Update 10:36 p.m.: SpaceX has announced the next planned launch of Starship out of Starbase, Texas. This launch comes after the last few missions ended in the loss of the ship before reentry.
There is currently no official launch date.
The uncrewed missions are aimed at pushing the design limits of Starship. Starship is aimed at becoming SpaceX's next workhorse launch system. SpaceX anticipates to eventually launch from and land at multiple Florida launch pads.
Tonight's Falcon 9 launch is in just over an hour from now.
SpaceX completes test fire ahead of Crew-11 launch from Florida
Update 10:25 p.m.: On July 29, SpaceX completed testing of the Falcon 9 rocket which will launch NASA Crew-11 to the ISS.
This test fire comes after an attempted test aborted on Monday, July 28 with less than a minute to the engine fire. SpaceX attributed the issue to the 'transporter erector's cradle arm position indication'. The transporter erector is what transports the rocket and raises it into launch position.
Tonight's liftoff is still planned for 11:37 p.m.
Weather outlook released for NASA Crew-11 SpaceX launch
Update 10:15 p.m.: The 45th Weather Squadron has released the T-2 day weather report ahead of the planned July 31 launch of NASA's Crew-11.
It is predicted launch day will see an 85% chance of favorable conditions during the time of the liftoff.
The crew of four will launch to the International Space Station from NASA's Kennedy Space Center Pad 39A. Liftoff is planned for 12:09 p.m. July 31.

The acting administrator of NASA has issued a directive to fast-track efforts to put a nuclear reactor on the moon. 'To properly advance this critical technology to be able to support a future lunar economy, high power energy generation on Mars, and to strengthen our national security in space, it is imperative the agency move quickly,' Sean Duffy, the secretary of transportation whom President Trump appointed last month as temporary leader of the space agency, wrote in the directive, which was sent out on Thursday. Politico was first to report on the directive. In it, Mr. Duffy cites plans by China and Russia to put a reactor on the moon by the mid-2030s as part of a partnership to build a base there. If they were first, China and Russia 'could potentially declare a keep-out zone' that would inhibit what the United States could do there, Mr. Duffy said. The directive calls for the appointment of a NASA official to oversee the effort within 30 days and for a request seeking proposals from commercial companies to be issued within 60 days. The reactor will be required to generate at least 100 kilowatts of electrical power — enough for about 80 households in the United States — and to be ready to launch in late 2029. One lunar day lasts four weeks on Earth — two weeks of continual sunshine followed by two weeks of cold darkness. That harsh cycle makes it difficult for a spacecraft or a moon base to survive with just solar panels and batteries. Current exploration efforts, both by NASA and by the Chinese-Russian partnership, are focusing on the south polar region, where the sun is never high over the horizon and the bottoms of some craters lie in permanent shadows. Over the years, NASA has financed nuclear reactor research, including the awarding of three $5 million contracts in 2022 to companies developing initial designs. Tesla is awarding Elon Musk around $29 billion in shares as a legal battle looms over a prior multibillion dollar compensation plan for the chief executive. A special committee of the company's board of directors said the interim pay package would motivate Musk to "stay focused" on Tesla as the electric vehicle maker pivots to robotics and artificial intelligence. Under the pay plan, Musk would receive 96 million shares valued at around $300 each as long as he remains in an executive position at Tesla for the next two years. On Musk's social media platform X, the special committee said the executive has not received "meaningful compensation" for his work for eight years. One of the world's richest people, Musk owns about 13% of Tesla shares, making him the largest individual shareholder. The company is worth more than $969 billion based on current share prices. Tesla shares on Monday closed at $309.26, up 2%. Why did the board approve this plan? Tesla board members Robyn Denholm and Kathleen Wilson-Thompson said on X that the $29 billion award is a first step, "good faith" effort to compensate Musk in lieu of a longer term plan. As Musk splits his time and energy among several ventures, including AI startup xAI and space exploration firm SpaceX, Tesla board members said they are eager to keep his attention focused on the electric vehicle maker. Musk has garnered criticism from investors for getting distracted by his temporary role in the Trump administration. Tesla shares have fallen more than 18% this year following significant brand damage and plunging vehicle sales. The company is at a critical turning point where it must pivot to robotics and autonomous driving technology to remain competitive, analysts said. Musk has overseen Tesla's robotaxi launch in Austin, Texas, and frequently touts the potential of the humanoid robot Optimus. "While these impending changes are exciting, the outcomes are not guaranteed," wrote Denholm and Wilson-Thompson. "It is imperative to retain and motivate our extraordinary talent, beginning with Elon." "We are confident that this award will incentivize Elon to remain at Tesla," they wrote. What happened to Musk's previous pay package? A Delaware judge has twice struck down a 2018 executive pay package that would have awarded Musk more than $55 billion in stock, arguing that Musk exerted unfair control over the negotiation process. In 2018, Tesla shareholder Richard Tornetta sued the company to block the compensation plan, claiming the board misled investors and was not transparent about the approval process. Tornetta and his attorneys also argued that the board was too susceptible to Musk's influence. Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick, the judge in the case, sided with Tornetta and rescinded the entire pay package, calling it an "unfathomable sum." McCormick denied the pay plan again in 2024, after the board held another vote to approve it. Tesla has since appealed McCormick's second decision, citing his contributions to Tesla's growth. "This compensation issue has been a constant concern of shareholders once the Delaware soap opera began," Tesla analyst Dan Ives wrote in a note. If the 2018 plan is ultimately approved after legal battles, the recent $29 billion package will be thrown out to prevent double dipping, the board said. How does Musk's pay compare to other chief executives? The pay package brought to court in 2018 was the largest potential compensation plan for an executive of a publicly traded company, McCormick said, worth 250 times as much as the median peer pay. The new plan is still the highest executive compensation package by far. Blackstone Chief Executive Stephen Schwarzman earned $1.39 billion in 2008, compared to the $29 billion interim package for Musk. Another top earner, Palantir CEO Alexander Karp, earned $1.10 billion in 2020. In 2018, Musk agreed to forgo a cash salary for his work at Tesla and instead receive stock options based on his ability to meet company milestones. Board members argue that the value Musk brings to the company is worth hefty compensation. "We can all agree that Elon has delivered the transformative and unprecedented growth that was required to earn all milestones of the 2018 CEO Performance Award," the board's special committee wrote. Can you teach an old Mars rover new tricks? NASA says the answer is a resounding 'yes.' Following its landing on Mars 13 years ago, Curiosity has been given new capabilities, allowing it to do science on the Red Planet while expending less energy from its batteries. Essentially, it can now multitask. 'We were more like cautious parents earlier in the mission,' Reidar Larsen, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said in a statement. 'It's as if our teenage rover is maturing, and we're trusting it to take on more responsibility. As a kid, you might do one thing at a time, but as you become an adult, you learn to multitask.' Larsen led a group of engineers who developed the new capabilities for their six-wheeled teen. The agency said improvements to Curiosity will allow the rover to make the most of its energy source, which is a type of nuclear battery known as a radioisotope thermoelectric generator also used by the Perseverance rover. Managing the rover's daily power budget as the plutonium in the battery decays, Curiosity can now safely talk to a local orbiter while driving, moving its robotic arm, or snapping images. Curiosity can now decide to take a nap if it gets its work done early, ensuring there is less recharging necessary before the next day. 'Even actions that trim just 10 or 20 minutes from a single activity add up over the long haul, maximizing the life of the MMRTG for more science and exploration down the road,' the lab said in a release. These developments build on years of work developing other capabilities, including enhanced driving ability, the ability for Curiosity's head to capture panoramas without a color filter wheel on one of its 'Mastcam' cameras, a new way for Curisotiy's arm drill to collect rock and regolith samples, and an algorithm to help reduce wear and tear on the rover's wheels. The rover has recently been exploring formations of hardened ridges that were believed to have been created by underground water billions of years ago, finding rocks that were formed by the minerals deposited by ancient water flows and wind. 'A big mystery is why the ridges were hardened into these big patterns and why only here,' Curiosity's project scientist Ashwin Vasavada said earlier this year. 'As we drive on, we'll be studying the ridges and mineral cements to make sure our idea of how they formed is on target.' Solve the daily Crossword
