Surprise wedding takes place at 35,000ft on United Airlines flight
A couple decided to take their relationship to another level — by tying the knot at 35,000ft on a plane. Jake Meli and Abigail Power were 'United' in holy matrimony on board a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Orlando, Florida, exchanging vows while surrounded by fellow passengers and flight attendants. United, which posted a video of the event to its Instagram page, revealed that the in-flight wedding idea began as a dare. Jake's friend got married on a cruise ship out at sea and challenged the groom to 'one-up him' by getting married in the air. Jake was only too willing to take up the challenge. Not only had he been flying with United since childhood, but the happy couple had already decided to book a flight to Orlando for their honeymoon, with visits to Orlando's Disney World and Universal Studios parks on the itinerary. The ceremony was coordinated with United, which decked out the plane with twinkling lights and provided a mid-flight bottle of Champagne and a cake. The ceremony was announced by a flight attendant, who said: 'Attention all passengers, we will be starting the wedding now.' Then, with the couple in their wedding attire standing at the front of the plane, their officiant, Jake's brother, said: 'Friends, family and fellow passengers, who just thought they were taking a normal flight to Orlando… surprise! 'You officially become guests at a wedding, 35,000ft in the air. 'Don't worry, no formal attire is required. And the snack cart will be making its rounds shortly. 'But now, we're right here, quite literally in the clouds, to celebrate something truly special, the marriage of my brother, Jake, and his wonderful bride, Abi.' He continued: 'So, whether you're here for the vows, the vacation, or just trying to get home, thank you for being part of this one-of-a-kind moment.' To cheers from the cabin, he pronounced them husband and wife by the power vested in him by the Universal Life Church, which enables members of the public to become ordained and officiate weddings. He added: 'May your adventures always be epic and the force always be with you.' Abi and Jake's wedding, which took place last week, was undoubtedly unusual, but not quite as bizarre as the wedding ceremony of UK couple Darren McWalters and Katie Hodgson in 2008, who tied the knot while wing-walking on biplanes.

Famous Brazilian singer dies suddenly aged just 50 while receiving colon cancer treatment in NYC
Brazilian singer and actress Preta Gil has died from cancer at the age of 50. Gil was battling colon cancer since January 2023 and was in New York, where she was receiving treatment. She was on her way to the airport to return to Brazil when she fell ill. She was rushed to a medical facility, where she died. 'It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Preta Maria Gadelha Gil Moreira in New York, where we are currently processing the procedures for her repatriation to Brazil,' Gil's father and former culture minister Gilberto Gil said in a statement Sunday evening. 'We ask for the understanding of so many dear friends, fans, and media professionals as we navigate this difficult time as a family.' The artist had received chemotherapy and radiation in Brazil. She underwent surgery to remove tumors in August 2024 after the cancer spread to the ureter, the peritoneum and two lymph nodes. In May, Gil traveled to the United States to seek care for her illness, splitting time between Washington and New York as she tried experimental treatments. 'Life is happening and I'm between New York and Washington! I start my treatment on the 10th [of June],' she said in a social media post. 'In the meantime, I'm strengthening myself physically and spiritually, receiving lots of love. I love you all, thank you for all the daily messages, prayers and positive energy. You heal me!' Gil initially worked as producer and publicist before releasing her first album, 'Prêt-à-Porter,' in 2003 at the age of 29. The project was widely criticized because she appeared nude in the album cover. 'I remember showing it to my father and he said, 'Unnecessary, Preta.' That was a mess in my head,' Gil told Brazilian television present Pedro Bial at the time. 'But my father is wise. He knew exactly what I was going to go through later. I released the album thinking I was covering up, but there was a flood of criticism at the time. A lot of conservatism.' She released her second album, 'Preta,' in 2005 and 'Noite Petra' in 2010 while touring across the South American nation for seven years. Gil took her singing success to the theatrical stage and launched the musical 'Baile da Preta.' 'Brazilian popular music is so rich and varied, and I feel it's my duty as an artist to bring this diversity to the stage,' she said. 'I want the audience to have a complete experience, not only auditory but also visual. The set, lighting, and costumes are very important to me.' Petra also hosted her own television show, 'Vai e vem,' where guests spoke about their sexual past. 'I wanted it to be a show without vulgarity, with intelligence and humor,' she said in interview with talk show host Jo Soares.

Hunter Biden takes on George Clooney and presidential debate in interview
Hunter Biden has given a profanity-laced, three-hour interview to US outlet Channel 5 that is remarkable for its no-holds attack on actor George Clooney, denial that he was the source of cocaine found in the White House and thoughts on why his father bombed in his debate with Donald Trump before dropping out of his presidential re-election run. 'Fuck him!' the younger Biden said of Clooney, whose remarkable New York Times opinion piece last July called on the Democratic party for which the actor is a financial donor to find a new presidential nominee. 'Fuck him and everybody around him. I don't have to be fucking nice.' Referring to comments from the well-known film director that Clooney is not a 'movie star', Biden continued: 'I agree with Quentin Tarantino. Fucking George Clooney is not a fucking actor. He is fucking like … I don't know what he is. He's a brand.' Biden questioned why anyone had to listen to Clooney despite his friendship with Barack Obama, a former Democratic president, and his 'really great place in Lake Como'. 'What do you have to do with fucking anything?' Biden said, speaking rhetorically about Clooney. 'What right do you have to step on a man who's given … his fucking life to the service of this country and decide that you, George Clooney, are going to take out basically a full page ad in the fucking New York Times.' Hunter Biden shared with the Channel 5 outlet his belief that Clooney was upset at Joe Biden, 82, because the former president had criticized the international criminal court (ICC)'s decision to obtain an arrest warrant for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on war crime charges. Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, who is married to the actor, was one of the legal experts who recommended that the ICC seek that warrant. 'He was bitching to the White House staff, the senior staff that he was so angry that the president would criticize the arrest warrant,' Hunter Biden said. 'He was very, very angry that my dad did not pay homage to her or something.' Biden's interview to Channel 5, a popular YouTube channel created by Andrew Callaghan, comes as US House Republicans pursue investigations into his father's presidency. Congressional Republicans have been claiming that the former president's closest advisers covered up a physical and mental decline during his presidency, including his pre-emptive pardons of family members, including Hunter, after Trump threatened to prosecute his opponents as he captured the Oval Office again in November. Hunter Biden acknowledged that Joe Biden had an 'absolutely horrible' debate against Trump before his father dropped out of the 2024 presidential race exactly a year ago Monday and endorsed vice-president Kamala Harris to succeed him. Hunter Biden said his father had to drop out or see fellow Democrats fight him 'every step of the way'. Among the reasons for the poor debate performance were that his father – 81 at the time – was 'tired as shit', Hunter Biden said. 'They give him Ambien to be able to sleep. He gets up on the stage and looks like he's a deer in the headlights, and it feeds into every fucking story that anybody wants to tell.' After Trump's second presidency began in January, the FBI re-opened an investigation into who left cocaine in a White House locker in 2023. Suspicions have fallen on Hunter Biden, whose past struggles with substance abuse have been well documented. But Hunter Biden denied the cocaine found in the White House was his, asserting he has been clean and sober since June 2019. 'Why would I bring cocaine into the White House and stick it into a cubby outside … the situation room in the West Wing?' he asked. The 55-year-old's Channel 5 interview comes weeks after his father embarked on a series of interviews, including with the New York Times, aimed at convincing the public that Harris's loss to Trump in 2024 was not his fault. Asked about his business dealings, which resulted in federal tax evasion charges and illegal handgun possession that were later vacated by his father's pardon, Biden pointed to his work as a board member at the national rail network Amtrak and the US-UN World Food Program.
