Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper running for Senate
In a video post, Cooper, a Democrat, portrayed his campaign as a fight to save the middle class.
"Today, for too many Americans, the middle class feels like a distant dream," he said in the video. "Meanwhile the biggest corporations and the richest Americans have grabbed unimaginable wealth at your expense. It's time for that to change."
He warned that the country is now "facing a moment as fragile as any I can remember," and said the next election would "determine if we even have a middle class in America."
The former governor said that he'd have preferred to stay and serve in North Carolina, but felt he had to run for Senate because of the decisions D.C. politicians have made to increase the national debt and cut health care and programs to help the poor "just to give tax breaks to billionaires."
Earlier this month, Congress passed the massive spending measure known as the "big beautiful bill," which extends President Trump's 2017 tax cuts, increases border security, defense and energy production spending and is paid for in part by significant cuts to health care and nutrition programs. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that it will add $3.4 trillion to federal deficits over the next 10 years and leave millions without health insurance, though Republicans and the White House dispute those forecasts.
Cooper was a two-term governor who unseated the Republican incumbent, Pat McCrory, and previously served nearly four terms as state attorney general. He was the longest-serving state attorney general in North Carolina's history.
"I want to serve as your next United States Senator, because, even now, I still believe our best days are ahead," Cooper said.
Republican National Committee chairman Michael Whatley is also expected to announce a bid for Tilllis' Senate seat in the coming days.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Kirsten Gillibrand welcomed Cooper to the race, saying in a joint statement that he's "a formidable candidate who will flip North Carolina's Senate seat, and his announcement is the latest indication that the Republicans' Senate majority is at risk in 2026."

Kennedy Jr. — an appointee of Republican President Donald Trump — from the family's annual July 4 shindig in Hyannis Port, Mass. As Globe readers know, Mary Jo attended a late-night party in 1969 that Ted hosted on Chappaquiddick for the 'Boiler Room Girls' — a group of politically ambitious young women. Married Ted left the party with Mary Jo, 28, and detoured to the Massachusetts island's lover's lane, but his 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont ultimately plunged off a bridge and landed on its roof in a pond. Ted survived — but Mary Jo was left to die in the wreckage. The big shot, who succumbed to a brain tumor in 2009 at age 77, didn't report the crash for 10 hours and later claimed he'd tried to rescue Mary Jo, who some say was pregnant with his child. Leo Damore had used the resurfaced tapes to write his explosive 1988 best-seller, Senatorial Privilege: The Chappaquiddick Cover-Up, which alleges that Ted utilized the Kennedy political machine to bury the sketchy incident and attempt to salvage his White House ambitions. However, the tapes disappeared after Leo's 1995 suicide as he worked on a book about JFK mistress Mary Pinchot Meyer, who in 1964 was gunned down in Washington, D.C. Many suspect her unsolved murder was orchestrated by the CIA to keep her from revealing the agency's supposed role in JFK's 1963 assassination. Leo's son, Nick, 39, tells People the tapes were found in a briefcase under the bed of one of his father's late lawyers and contain hours of interviews, including extensive chats with Ted's late cousin Joe Gargan. In another book, Chappaquiddick Revealed: What Really Happened, author Kenneth Kappel alleges drunken Ted crashed into a tree, thought Mary Jo was dead and sought help from Gargan and friend Paul Markham. Kappel writes that the trio pushed the Olds off the bridge to make it appear as if Mary Jo had been at the wheel alone to keep Ted from being charged with vehicular homicide. Officials believe Mary Jo survived inside the death trap for hours in an air pocket. According to Leo's book, when Gargan suggested Ted call the police, the pickled politician replied, 'I'll take care of it,' but went home to sleep it off instead! Ted later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and received a two-month suspended sentence. Nick Damore declined to comment for this article.

US president Donald Trump sacks jobs data chief after dismal employment report
US President Donald Trump on Friday fired the head of the government agency in charge of monthly jobs data after a report showed hiring slowed in July and was much weaker in May and June than previously reported. In a post on his social media platform, Trump alleged that the figures by the Bureau of Labor Statistics were manipulated for political reasons, saying Erika McEntarfer, the director of the agency who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, should be fired. 'I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY,' Trump said on Truth Social. 'She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified.' The US leader later posted: 'In my opinion, today's Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad.' While Trump provided no evidence, the charge that the data was faked was seen as an explosive reaction that threatens to undercut the political legitimacy of the US government's economic data. For decades, Wall Street investors and economists have mostly believed the data to be free from political bias. McEntarfer's removal condemned After Trump's initial post, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said on X that McEntarfer was no longer leading the bureau and that William Wiatrowski, the deputy commissioner, would serve as the acting director. 'I support the President's decision to replace Biden's Commissioner and ensure the American People can trust the important and influential data coming from BLS,' Chavez-DeRemer said. But condemnation soon followed. A group that included two former BLS commissioners, including William Beach, who was appointed by Trump to the position, berated McEntarfer's firing. They particularly objected to the charge that the data was altered for political reasons. 'This rationale for firing Dr. McEntarfer is without merit and undermines the credibility of federal economic statistics that are a cornerstone of intelligent economic decision-making by businesses, families, and policymakers,' the statement from the group, the Friends of BLS, said. Beach and former President Barack Obama's BLS commissioner, Erica Groshen, signed the letter. 'Firing the Commissioner ... when the BLS revises jobs numbers down (as it routinely does) threatens to destroy trust in core American institutions and all government statistics,' Arin Dube, an economist at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, said on X. 'I can't stress how damaging this is.' Report shows 73,000 jobs were added in July Friday's jobs report showed that just 73,000 jobs were added last month and that 258,000 fewer jobs were created in May and June than previously estimated. The report indicated that the US economy has weakened significantly under Trump, following a slowdown in economic growth in the first half of the year and a spike in inflation in June, which appeared to be a result of the pressure on prices brought on by the president's tariffs. 'No one can be that wrong? We need accurate job numbers,' Trump wrote. 'She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate; they can't be manipulated for political purposes.'
