Filipino singer-songwriter Freddie Aguilar, best known for his chart-topping international hit Anak, died in Manila aged 72, local media reported.
He had been receiving treatment at the Philippine Heart Center, according to social media posts by his wife, Jovie Albao-Aguilar.
Aguilar was one of the leaders of the locally based Original Pilipino Music movement of the 1970s, and was known for his political activism, often tackling social issues through song.
In the 1980s, he lent his voice to the People Power Movement that overthrew then-dictator Ferdinand Marcos, with his rendition of the traditional patriotic ballad Bayan Ko (My Country) serving as an anthem.
In a special 2018 resolution, the Philippine Senate lauded him for 'lifetime outstanding contributions to Philippine arts and culture.'

He entertained fans from all over the World, and the cultural impact he had was massive," Trump said on social media. Pro wrestling legend Hulk Hogan dies at 71

File photo of Hulk Hogan speaking during the last day of the 2024 Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 18, 2024. – AFP photo MIAMI (July 24): Hulk Hogan, the iconic face of professional wrestling in the 1980s who parlayed his prowess in the ring into an acting career, has died at the age of 71, US media reported today. Hogan — a Hall of Fame talent known for his towering 6'7″ (two-meter) physique, bandana and distinctive blond handlebar mustache — died at his home in Florida, NBC News reported, citing his manager Chris Volo. TMZ also reported the news, citing unnamed sources and an emergency personnel dispatch call about a 'cardiac arrest' at his home. Hogan's magnetic personality — his ring character was a heroic all-American — and wrestling skills transformed the sport into mainstream family entertainment, attracting millions of viewers and turning the league into a revenue juggernaut. Hogan — real name Terry Bollea — first competed in 1979 in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now known as WWE) but became a mainstay and fan favorite in the mid-1980s alongside others like Andre the Giant and 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper. His brand of 'Hulkamania' transferred to the small and big screen, with roles in films such as 'Rocky III,' 'No Holds Barred' and TV's 'Baywatch.' He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. 'WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture's most recognisable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s,' World Wrestling Entertainment said on social media. 'WWE extends its condolences to Hogan's family, friends, and fans.' The wrestler was embroiled in controversy more than a decade ago after an intimate video of him leaked, and then again a few years later for his use of racist language, including a slur referring to Black Americans. The latter caused him to be fired from WWE in 2015. He later apologised for his actions and was reinstated to the WWE Hall of Fame. In recent years, Hogan became an avid supporter of US President Donald Trump. He memorably appeared at the 2024 Republican National Convention that would seal Trump's nomination — tearing his shirt off to reveal a Trump-Vance tank top. 'With our leader up there, my hero, that gladiator, we're gonna bring America back together,' Hogan said on stage in July 2024. Hogan suffered numerous health problems in later years, stemming from the years of abuse his body took in the ring. He was married three times, and had two children with his first wife Linda. – AFP Hulk Hogan RIP wrestling WWE

#SHOWBIZ: Doctor who supplied drugs to 'Friends' star Matthew Perry pleads guilty

LOS ANGELES: A doctor who supplied Matthew Perry with ketamine pleaded guilty on Wednesday in connection with the 2023 drug overdose death of the "Friends" star, US media reported. Salvador Plasencia, 43, one of five people charged over Perry's death, pleaded guilty in a federal court in Los Angeles to four counts of distribution of ketamine. Plasencia is to be sentenced on December 3 and faces up to 40 years in prison. "Dr. Plasencia is profoundly remorseful for the treatment decisions he made while providing ketamine to Matthew Perry," Rolling Stone magazine quoted Plasencia's lawyer, Karen Goldstein, as saying in a statement. "He is fully accepting responsibility by pleading guilty to drug distribution," Goldstein said. Plasencia did not provide Perry with the fatal dose of ketamine but supplied the actor with the drug in the weeks before he was found dead in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home. Another doctor, Mark Chavez, pleaded guilty in October to conspiring to distribute ketamine to Perry. Plasencia allegedly bought ketamine off Chavez and sold it to the American-Canadian actor at hugely inflated prices. "I wonder how much this moron will pay," Plasencia wrote in one text message presented by prosecutors. Jasveen Sangha, the alleged "Ketamine Queen" who supplied drugs to high-end clients and celebrities, is charged with selling Perry the dose that killed him. She has pleaded not guilty. Perry's live-in personal assistant and another man pleaded guilty in August to charges of conspiracy to distribute ketamine. - AFP
