Real bonds or reel friends? Youngsters reassess online friendships
This Friendship Day, young people are reflecting on what it truly means to be a "friend" in the digital era.
While online platforms offer multiple avenues for communication, there is broad agreement that in-person interaction remains unmatched. Many young people acknowledge that packed schedules, geographical distance, and a lack of common free time often push them towards digital connections.
Ayush Anand, a private sector employee in Patna, relies primarily on Instagram to keep in touch with friends.
"I can connect there by sharing memes and reels. Without speaking, one can still feel connected," he said.Though he prefers meeting in person to create lasting memories, Ayush also maintains longstanding online friendships.
"There are many online friends I've never met in person, but we've been connected for the past eight to nine years. We were all added to a cricket group on an instant messaging app. There were about 250 members, but a few of us became real friends," he said.A recurring concern among the youth is the uncertainty over the authenticity of online personas.
Many question how one can truly know someone without meeting them face-to-face.
Yet, paradoxically, some find comfort in online friendships, citing a lower risk of disappointment due to the limited emotional investment at the outset.
Satyam Kumar, a resident of Nehru Nagar, prefers the same instant messaging platform for its group chat feature.
"Friends share memes and reels and that starts conversations without needing to talk constantly," he said.
Though he has numerous online acquaintances, he considers those connections relatively shallow. "Real closeness still needs real-world interaction," he added.
Dr Niska Sinha, a senior psychiatrist at IGIMS, Patna, describes today's digital friendships as characterised by an "easy connect, easy disconnect" dynamic.
"For younger children, what they see as friendship is often an addiction to online engagement," she observed.Dr Sinha acknowledged the positives of digital interaction, such as keeping in touch with distant friends, building communities for those who feel isolated, and connecting individuals with shared interests.
However, she warned that these interactions can lack emotional depth.
"The absence of non-verbal cues and emotional nuance online can hinder true understanding. Over-reliance on digital communication may paradoxically heighten feelings of loneliness," she said. She advises young people to use digital platforms as a supplement — not a substitute — for real-life interactions. "Don't hesitate to take breaks and invest time in nurturing friendships offline," she added.

Presi UG entrance results on Aug 9, profs worried over student quality
1 2 Kolkata: The West Bengal Joint Entrance Board will publish the entrance test results for undergraduate admissions to Presidency University on Aug 9. Professors and alumni are concerned about getting good students this year due to this delay. WBJEE conducted the test on June 21 and 22. The result publication was delayed due to legal ambiguity over OBC seat reservations. An edit option was given to students who appeared for the test. They were asked to update their social categories from Sunday onwards. Verification by the varsity will be done at the time of admission. The Board issued a notice on Sunday, saying that after incorporation of the social category responses, the result will be published on Aug 9 through WBJEE official websites. Even CUET results have been declared. An official of the university said, "We will only get clear updates about how many students appeared in the exam and how many of them will take admission later because we will access the data only on the date of result publication. But, we are concerned about the quality as well as quantity of student intake as a major number has already taken admissions in other institutions." Since 2016, the tests are being conducted by the Board. This year, the portal was opened for receiving applications on March 28 and was open for a month. Several students who appeared in the exam said this was the longest wait to reach the final round of admission, where maintaining patience became a great challenge. SFI has started a sit-in demanding result publication and start of PG admission. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Guest teachers face uncertainty amid new appointments in state
Patna: Recent appointment of assistant professors across various disciplines—based on recommendations from the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC)—has left hundreds of long-serving guest teachers in universities and colleges across the state in an uncertain position. Services of many of these teachers, who have been teaching for the last six to eight years, have not been renewed citing lack of vacancies. It has sparked widespread frustration and resentment among the qualified teachers. In protest, several affected guest faculty members at Patna University (PU) recently launched a hunger strike, demanding the renewal of their services against existing vacancies. The strike was called off only after PU authorities agreed to extend the contracts of some faculty members in select subjects. However, many others remain unaccommodated due to the lack of vacancies in their respective disciplines, according to PU sources. A guest lecturer from the physics department of Patna Science College expressed concern over the situation. He noted that all guest faculty members meet the University Grants Commission (UGC) eligibility criteria for assistant professors and have been teaching against substantive posts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Moose Approaches Girl At Bus Stop In Chuvashskaya Respublika - Watch What Happens Happy in Shape Undo Despite their dedication, their employment remains insecure, subject to abrupt termination at the discretion of university authorities. Currently, guest faculty members across Bihar's universities are paid an honorarium of Rs1,500 per class, capped at Rs 50,000 per month. This payment is made for only 11 months each year, with a mandatory one-month break before renewal—resulting in the loss of one month's pay. Additionally, they receive no compensation during summer vacations, further exacerbating their financial instability. A few months ago, the Bihar Legislative Council's education committee, led by MLC Ram Bachan Roy, recommended that guest faculty members—whose qualifications match those of regular teachers, who were appointed following the reservation roster, and who have served for five to six years—should be allowed to continue teaching until the age of 65, similar to regular faculty. Echoing this sentiment, Kanhaiya Bahadur Sinha, working president of the federation of university teachers' associations of Bihar (FUTAB), and general secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, MLC, have urged the chancellor and the state govt to regularise the services of these long-serving guest faculty members. Mumbai: More than 1,000 citizens, including Jain spiritual leaders, undertook a protest march from Colaba Jain Mandir to Gateway of India on Sunday, to protest the ban on feeding pigeons in the city.
