Woolworths Groups faces $100m blow as it shuts major online retailer MyDeal after purchasing it just three years ago

Sky News AU6 days ago
Woolworths Group will spend upwards of $100 million to shut down its customer website MyDeal just three years after purchasing an 80 per cent stake in it.
The nation's largest grocer on Friday revealed it will axe the online marketplace to grow its Big W Market and Everyday Market sites.
Woolworths Group's chief executive Amanda Bardwell said the decision to close MyDeal follows a warning to investors in February that the company was assessing its portfolio to crackdown on unprofitable parts of the business.
'MyDeal has brought marketplace expertise and leading technology to the Group's marketplace platform, Woolworths MarketPlus, enabling rapid (gross merchandise value) growth,' Ms Bardwell told shareholders.
'However, given the intensely competitive environment and the superior economics of marketplaces integrated into retail brands, we have made the decision to close the MyDeal customer website.
'The closure of MyDeal will lead to a meaningful reduction in Woolworths MarketPlus operating losses once completed.'
She said Woolworths will continue to use MyDeal's platform, assets and relationships for Big W Market and Everyday Market.
The closure is expected to cost Woolworths between $90m and $100m.
This money will mainly go to buyout the stakes of the founders alongside redundancies for outgoing employees.
Woolworths will report a further $45m from the loss of MyDeal's assets through the closure.
RBC Capital Markets analyst Michael Toner praised Woolworths' decision as the online retailer struggled to turn a profit.
'We view this as a positive, albeit incremental, step towards portfolio simplification as MyDeal had no near-term path to profitability,' Mr Toner said in a statement.
Woolworths valued the once-ASX listed MyDeal at $243m when it purchased the retailer in 2022.
MyDeal will be closed by September 30, but most of the staff will move within Woolworths Group, the company said.
Wesfarmers similarly shut down its online retailer Catch Group earlier this year and cited tough competition from giants such as Temu and Amazon.
Woolworths' share price has shed 1.1 per cent as of about 1pm Friday after informing shareholders of its plans to dump MyDeal.
The company is down more than eight per cent over the past 12 months.

Santa Fe Minerals (ASX:SFM) has laid claim to the Eburnea gold project, acquiring it from Turaco Gold (ASX:TCG) in return for 12 million shares, 4m performance rights and a potential 2.5% net smelter royalty. The company has also locked in commitments for a $1.2m share placement, offered at a 61% premium to its last closing price, to fund exploration at Eburnea. The project has produced broad gold hits of up to 26m at 4.82 g/t and a bonanza intersection of 3m at 35.79 g/t gold that SFM is keen to explore further. Australian Oil (ASX:AOK) is moving to offload debt from its books, coming to a settlement with former director Gary Jeffery and his company Dungay Resources to eliminate a $1m loan and the balance of interest accrued. AOK will pay $28k and issue 36m shares to satisfy the total debt of just over $184k, settling the matter. Falcon Metals (ASX:FAL) reckons it's hit Bendigo Goldfield-style mineralisation in the first hole drilled at the Blue Moon prospect, situated within the prolific Garden Gully anticline. FAL's drill bit hit 2.4m at 8.4 g/t gold from 600m of depth, peaking at 0.3m at 48.7 g/t gold in an area that has produced 5.2Moz of gold at an average grade of 15 g/t. Management thinks there's a good chance there are multiple quartz veins and thicker saddle reefs in the immediate Blue Moon area, drilling a wedge hole to better target the wider bands of mineralisation. Thunderbird Resources (ASX:THB) is also rising on gold-related news this morning; rock chip assays from its Kookabookra project in NSW returned particularly impressive assays of up to 153.5 g/t gold. The company is zeroing-in on the Mt Secret and Mannix prospects in particular, where gold-in-soil results up to 926 parts per billion coupled with the high-grade rock chip results point to potential gold systems. There's also more than 400 historical mine workings on the project – THB has boots on the ground at the Bear Hill and Butcher Reef prospects to sample them. Iron ore rebound propels ASX rotation into BHP

A renewed push by Beijing to tackle the deflationary spiral engulfing the world's second-largest economy has provided a reprieve to wary iron ore markets and propelled a long-awaited rotation into the ASX's beaten-down mining sector. China's top leadership has vowed to crack down on 'disorderly' price competition between businesses and curb outdated industrial capacity, Xinhua News Agency reported. The pledges were delivered at a high-level economic meeting chaired by President Xi Jinping this week, highlighting the urgency of officials to boost domestic demand.

Dexus sues AMP as stoush over $1.7b Macquarie Centre widens

Dexus is suing against wealth management giant AMP over the sale value of Sydney's billion-dollar Macquarie Shopping Centre, which the ASX-listed property and infrastructure owner was forced to hand over to major superannuation fund investors. AMP said it would defend the action, which was lodged in the Supreme Court of NSW this week. In a brief statement, it said the law suit related to 'the disposal of the Macquarie Shopping Centre' as it demerged parts of its once-sprawling empire including asset management to focus on wealth after the financial services royal commission.
