Mum responsible for Markus Fafana's jail hell should apologise to his parents
Finally, the north London 18-year-old is back from a Dubai jail after being imprisoned for the crime of having a holiday romance.
The Year 13 student, to give it proper context, had been sentenced to 12 months for having consensual sex with a 17-year-old British girl (who has since turned 18) he'd met out there.
They'd been in the same school year, according to his lawyer. They'd intended to continue their holiday romance back in the UK.
The girl's mother, however, hit the roof and, in a massive over-reaction, went complaining to the police.
They arrested Fakana and a completely avoidable set of circumstances led to a young man with his entire life ahead of him being branded a criminal and subjected to seven months of hell.
He is out now, courtesy of a royal pardon from Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The Detained In Dubai group which campaigned tirelessly for Fakana's release deserve special mention.
But, as a father of four teenagers myself, including an 18-year-old son, I'm finding it hard to escape the torment both Marcus and his parents have gone through over the past seven months.
I'm struggling to celebrate when the trauma of his experience will most likely haunt him for the rest of his life.
I'm having trouble breaking out the bunting because we all know how lawless and unaccountable prisons still are, around the world.
We know that, being 18, he'd suddenly found himself in an adult prison - a jungle totally disproportionate with his rule breach - and unable to even speak the language.
We know just how easy it is for those who should protect young men like Marcus in that kind of institution, to look the other way as predators and bullies attack young men like Marcus - physically and psychologically.
Imagine being his parents, sick with worry every night at that possibility.
Imagine their sleepless nights, the tears they've cried, their helplessness at being unable to protect him.
Then imagine being Marcus, petrified out of his wits that he could be targeted during the day and even more afraid of what the night might bring.
Imagine the lasting emotional damage now forever connected with his first time.
For all the things he will eventually open up about from his time there, consider most the things he doesn't talk about. The scars that may never heal.
I hope the girl's vindictive mother thinks about all those things. I still do hope she gets even a sense of the contempt in which most other mums view her.
Go ballistic at Marcus and your daughter, yes. Give them both barrels verbally, absolutely.
But it takes a special piece of work to call the police and leave another parent's son at the mercy of law enforcement in a foreign country.
There are mums and dads like her in every school WhatsApp group. You know, the ones who think their kids are better than everyone else's.
But this mum's lack of respect and compassion towards Fakana's parents and loved ones has been spectacular.
Let's not kid ourselves, rules are rules. We Brits can't bend the clarity of the law in Dubai to suit ourselves. Sex outside marriage for tourists there is banned unless both parties are 18.
Zero tolerance over there really does mean zero tolerance. So let's not be arrogant and believe there should be different rules for us.
But Detained in Dubai managed to establish Fakana was only charged because the girl's mother found the chats and pictures exchanged between him and the girl once she'd returned to the UK.
And, surprise, surprise, once they were back in this country, mum knew that only Marcus would have been sold down the river, not her daughter.
Seven months on it will be some feat of emotional detachment for her not to feel any sense of shame or remorse. She must surely have a friend or a sibling able to tell her to her face that she was out of order.
Because if has has anything about her whatsoever, any semblance of parental solidarity left, she would issue an apology to Marcus and his parents.
It is the least they deserve.

British teenagers are being lured into joining a Nigerian gang that forces recruits to drink blood to prove their loyalty. Law enforcement agencies warn that the Black Axe gang is preying upon debt-ridden students and professionals working at large organisations, offering them an opportunity to make fast cash. Some are used as 'money mules' who facilitate the transfer of fraudulent money through their bank accounts. Multinational gangs including Black Axe are now responsible for a majority of the world's cyberfraud, according to Interpol. Recruits, who are often male, are first required to undergo an 'initiation' ceremony which involves being stripped, tortured and made to drink blood, before they become 'Axemen'. Detectives say the gang uses Snapchat to distribute registration forms, taking advantage of instantly disappearing 'snap' messages to cover up their fraudulent activities, the Irish Times reported. However, the social network's parent company Snap Inc. insisted content suspected to be illegal is saved and reported to authorities. Black Axe, which operates as a mafia-style organisation, has an estimated 30,000 members across dozens of countries worldwide. Among the recruits of the scheme was 26-year-old university graduate Funmi Abimbola, who was jailed for three years last October for laundering money. The bank worker was said to have had 'many good qualities', but was lured into the crime group, for which he provided bank accounts for the transfer of money. Ireland's Operation Skein has so far identified 1,400 individuals connected to Black Axe. It has prosecuted more than 300 affiliated people, cautioned 39 juveniles, and identified more than 1,000 money mules during the investigation. 'Individuals need to realise that if they act as a money mule, they are interacting with vicious transnational organised criminals', said Garda Detective Inspector Michael Cryan. He added that the gang 'controls' its recruits, demanding that they hand themselves over in the event money is stopped or frozen by their bank. 'People who get involved in this are destroying their own futures because they could go to jail, end up with a criminal record and be prevented from getting jobs.' Forces from 196 countries are also able to draw on data from Interpol, which has created an intelligence database on the gang. Interpol dealt a 'major blow' to the gang after coordinating a huge operation which saw more than 300 people linked to Black Axe and affiliated groups arrested worldwide, including in the UK and Ireland. The probe, codenamed Operation Jackal III, recovered £2.24million in stolen assets including luxury items and cryptocurrencies, and saw more than 700 bank accounts frozen. It also uncovered large transactions to Nigerian bank accounts. A senior official for the multinational crime organisation said that Black Axe were 'early adopters' in money transfer technology. Nigel Farage's 'fantasy' plan to cut crime as huge questions remain
Nigel Farage has been accused of peddling a string of 'ill-thought through slogans' after making big promises to tackle crime, with questions over his sums and the impact on prisons Nigel Farage has yet again been accused of peddling "fantasy" plans based on dodgy sums - this time on tackling crime. The Reform leader resorted to "amateur hour" headline-grabbing measures, including sending thousands of prisoners overseas to serve lenghty sentences, critics said. He named El Salavador as an example - but then admitted he hadn't discussed it with the central American nation. Mr Farage claimed it would cost £17.4billion to halve crime in five years, a sum he insisted could be raised without raising tax - but was later told his estimate was "billions out". His plans appeared to unravel after he said drug traffickers would face mandatory life imprisonment, as would people with three convictions for serious crimes. He also said people found in possession of a knife would not be eligible for suspended sentences. Despite this his proposals would create just 30,000 new prison spaces. Last year there were nearly 50,000 crimes reported to police involving a knife in England and Wales. The operating capacity of prisons was 89,600 in June this year. Sex offenders and those convicted of violent crimes would not qualify for early release, Mr Farage said. The Reform leader said the Army would be ordered to help build five "Nightingale" prisons - modelled on the hospitals fast-tracked during the Covid crisis. Inmates from overseas would be sent back to their homelands, he claimed. But it is unclear what would happen if countries refuse to take them back, with Mr Farage suggesting the UK would use its ecomonic heft to punish those who say no. The previous Tory government suggested sending prisoners to overseas jails - but experts questioned whether this would actually work. The populist Reform boss also claimed he would abolish a shoplifters' "charter" - even though he and his party voted against the Government's Crime and Policing Bill which does just that. Tory law changes mean thefts from shops worth under £200 are less likely to result in prosecution - sending cases sprialling. Labour Party chairwoman Ellie Reeves said: ' Nigel Farage repeatedly tried to block tough measures to make our streets safer. Reform is more interested in headline-chasing than serious policy-making in the interests of the British people. Farage's Reform MPs voted against the Labour Government's landmark Crime and Policing Bill which tackles antisocial behaviour, shoplifting, violence against women and girls, knife crime, and child abuse. The public deserves better than ill-thought through slogans and unfunded policy commitments. 'Unlike Reform, this Labour government is backing up its words with action." And Tory shadow chancellor Sir Mel Stride said: "Farage's sums don't add Reform's crime plan suggests prison places can be provided at £25,000, when the real cost is £40,000. This isn't a manifesto - it's a fantasy, written on the back of a fag packet. "Farage's numbers are billions out. You don't halve crime with wishful thinking. You do it with a real plan, real costs, and real leadership. Britain needs serious leadership, not amateur hour." Mr Farage claimed his plans would see 12,400 new prison places on Ministry of Defence (MOD) land within 18 months of a new Government. He said there would be an additional 10,400 created by transferring serious offenders overseas. He named El Salvador, but then admitted that he had not tested the water to see if its government would be open to such a deal with the UK. It is also unknown how much this would cost, but Reform documents suggest £1.25billion would be set aside over five years. He also said it is "fair, right and proper" that British criminals are taken back in return. Mr Farage said: "Reform will be the toughest party on law and order and on crime that this country has ever seen. "We will aim to cut crime by half in the first five years of Reform government. We will take back control of our streets. We will take back control of our courts, of our prisons. If you're a criminal, I am putting you on notice today that from 2029 or whenever that may be, either you obey the law or you will face very serious justice," Following Tory proposals to send prisoners overseas last year, the Prison Reform Trust responded: "Examples of where similar policies have been implemented by other countries to relieve problems of overcrowded and limited capacity have shown mixed results. "In the past decade, both Norway and Belgium have rented prison places in the Netherlands to handle problems of overcrowding and limited capacity. Ultimately, neither Norway nor Belgium extended their contracts with the Netherlands. "Both schemes were heavily criticised by national and international detention monitoring bodies." And it said: "In the case of Belgium, the arrangement did not reduce overcrowding – which continued to get worse."

On May 30, Ashton and his lifelong friend flew to Bangkok for a lad's holiday. Tragically, just five days into the trip, his family received the devastating news that Ashton had gone missing. He was later found in Chonburi Hospital, where he'd undergone extensive brain surgery. Investigations are being carried out by the Thai authorities, and it is still unclear what led to his admittance. Unfortunately, Ashton didn't have travel insurance, and his family were unable to shoulder the financial cost alone. I've got good news Ashton is flying home today! 'He's on his way home he'll land in Heathrow tomorrow. He's going to be very close to home so happy days, Ashton is on his way home!' The GoFundMe has officially been closed, and Ashton is currently undergoing medical treatment in the UK. His story has been a miraculous feat.
