New ‘time-slip' book that's a must-read for His Dark Materials fans
Phillip Pullman's fantasy series, which featured titles including Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, was suitable for all ages, doubling as a coming-of-age tale focused on teenagers Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry as well as a more mature read with allusions to philosophical and theological concepts.
Adam Howorth's exciting time-slip adventure merging past and present also has shades of Kazuo Ishiguro (Never Let Me Go, Klara and the Sun) and Angela Carter (The Magic Toyshop, Wise Children), but is very much its own thing. The author's highly original work 'explores the nature of faith and existence, through the dual lens of childhood innocence and increasingly desperate parenthood'.
But Fallen Feathers, whose plot is anchored by a mysterious book that changes the course of many lives over several time periods, is a highly original read. The central character is Elizabeth Fairchild, a child who goes missing during a rare lunar eclipse known as a super blood moon.
The synopsis reads: 'The race is on to find her before the eclipse is over and she is lost forever. From the discovery of another local girl that went missing years before and a book revealing an ancient prophecy that Elizabeth is a special, golden child, the past collides with modern day life in this spellbinding, epic tale of family, love and dangerous secrets.'
Among the book's fans are Stephen Fry, who described the 'enthralling' book as 'a serious achievement, with The Independent editor Geordie Greig calling it 'original and arresting'.
Fallen Feathers is being published on 28 October.

Brits' most cherished life moments revealed: from first kisses to newborn cuddles
According to research, Brits will go through five unforgettable moments a year, with three-quarters believing these distinctive experiences help shape who they are. These significant occasions include holding your newborn baby, watching a child take their first steps, or waving your youngster off on their first day of school. However, it's not solely about children - other crucial moments featured taking your first solo drive after passing your test, seeing a rare natural spectacle or welcoming a new pet into your home. Samsung commissioned the research to mark the launch of the large screen optimised Galaxy Z Fold7, unveiling a poem called 'Life Unfolds Fast', narrated by Martin Kemp and penned by poet Georgie Jones. The poem explores the milestones that shape our lives, while the film features intimate moments from Martin's family life and real-life footage from people of different ages, backgrounds, and identities. "Some of my life's greatest memories are those simple moments at home," Martin said, "playing with my kids in the garden, holding Harley and Roman as babies, and singing with my wife in the car. "These are moments that truly define our lives," Martin added. "Sharing these personal glimpses allows people to see how small, intimate moments become the big memories we want to go back to over again." The majority of people regularly revisit cherished memories on their phones either to reflect on special moments, boost their mood, or share their good times with others. In fact, two thirds value their digital memories just as much as physical keepsakes. But almost half worry about forgetting important life events, as they expressed concern about losing memories involving loved ones. Therefore, capturing photographs and videos proves essential to preserving these experiences. Generally, adults will revisit these pivotal memories on their mobiles approximately four times monthly, with 12 per cent estimating they possess over 10 hours of stored footage. Annika Bizon, from Samsung, which has Galaxy AI enabled within its slimmest foldable yet, said: "Our research shows that over 40 per cent of us take photos and videos for the sole purpose to not forget our best memories. "It allows you to capture and revisit the memories you never want to forget, feeling their warmth and emotion time and time again." TOP 25 UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS: Holding your newborn baby for the first time Watching your baby take their first steps Getting the keys to your first home The last goodbye to a loved one Your child's first day of school Falling in love for the first time Witnessing a child's first words Driving a car on your own for the first time Being told 'I love you' and saying it back Being proposed to - or proposing to someone Seeing your family all together in one place Listening to your baby's heartbeat during a pregnancy scan Watching someone you love achieve something they've worked hard for Seeing the Northern Lights or witnessing a rare natural phenomenon Graduating from school or university Reaching a goal you've worked towards for years Watching a child in your life perform in a school play Hugging / being reunited with someone you haven't seen in years Seeing a loved one return home safely after time away Getting your first job offer Walking out of work on your last day before retirement Bringing a new pet home and welcoming it into the family Watching your favourite sports team win in a big match Completing something you never thought you could do (e.g. a marathon) Saying goodbye to your pet

San Francisco's hit Luigi Mangione musical could be coming to NYC and L.A.—here's what to know
A musical about murder, hash browns, and America's crumbling institutions? Welcome to Luigi: The Musical, the runaway San Francisco fringe hit that might just be singing and tap-dancing its way to New York and Los Angeles. After a sold-out run at the Taylor Street Theater and a larger move to The Independent, this surrealist prison satire—featuring Sean 'Diddy' Combs, Sam Bankman-Fried and alleged killer Luigi Mangione as cellmates—has become a cultural moment. And yes, it really includes a ballad about breakfast potatoes and a love story between Diddy and SBF. The show reimagines its infamous trio not just as inmates at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center (which they were in real life), but as symbolic pillars of a broken America: Hollywood, tech and healthcare. Created by four stand-up comics (Nova Bradford, Arielle Johnson, André Margatini and Caleb Zeringue), the show turns real-world headlines into a tap-heavy, morally ambiguous fever dream. There's even a number about Mangione being arrested after removing his mask to flirt with a hostel worker and buying McDonald's hash browns. Despite its absurdity, the musical is not just punching down. It satirizes celebrity crime obsession and the commodification of violence, asking pointed questions about public trust and the role of institutions. 'These three people represent these big pillars of institutions in society that are failing in their trust: health care, Hollywood and then Big Tech,' Zeringue told the San Francisco Chronicle. The creators are currently eyeing the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August, with New York and L.A. productions in active discussion. While no dates have been confirmed, early buzz and interest from out-of-town producers suggest Luigi could find its way to bigger stages soon. Audiences have been packing the theater—sometimes standing along the walls—to watch Jonny Stein's heartthrob Luigi croon about martyrdom, back pain and bureaucracy. And while the Chronicle panned the show, that review is now baked into the script as a meta joke. 'I'm noticing people have different reactions based off of their own beliefs that they come in with, which I think is the sign of good art,' Zeringue said in an interview.

Inside England Lioness Chloe Kelly's marriage to husband Scott Moore
Chloe Kelly is the woman of the hour at the moment after securing the Lionesses' win at Euro 2025. The England women's football team triumphed over Spain in a nail-biting final that saw Kelly, 27, score the winning goal during penalties. It marks the first time an England team has won a major trophy on foreign soil. Among the proud loved ones celebrating the team's monumental achievement is Kelly's husband, Scott Moore, who shared a touching message on his Instagram page. 'Speechless once again,' he wrote, along with two silver heart emoji. 'I'm so grateful to have you by my side,' Chloe added when she shared the post to her own Instagram Stories. Kelly maintains a fairly private life, but it is thought that she began dating the Everton groundsman after they met when she was playing for the team. Opening up on how they met, Kelly told Vogue: 'One day I held the door for him, and ever since that day he kept saying he was going to message me. 'When he did slide into my DMs, I didn't see it for ages, because it was in my requests folder, and then when I did see it I was like, 'Who is this?' But when I saw a few people that I knew had followed him, I realised, I must know him!' They then went on an unlikely first date to IKEA, and the rest is history. 'We got a little monkey and every time I see it, it reminds me of when we went to IKEA,' she told The Sun. Moore proposed in 2023 during a trip to Finland, popping the question under the Northern Lights. Here's to forever with you.' Speaking about the moment on the NearlyWeds Podcast, Kelly lightly ribbed Moore over what made her happier – the proposal, or her winning goal at the 2023 Euros. 'The wedding's not been yet, so I'm going to say the winning goal,' she teased. The couple tied the knot in 2024 after being together for five years in a picturesque ceremony at Merrydale Manor in Cheshire. She walked down the aisle in an incredible, intricate white lace dress with bridesmaid team-mates Ruby Mace and Steph Houghton. Their one-year wedding anniversary fell during the Euros, with Kelly admitting she hadn't had much time to celebrate among training and playing. 'I haven't even got a card, to be honest,' she said before the tournament began. 'I'm sure in the moment, I'll think of something and get my mum to sort it More Trending 'But no, we are just taking it each game as it comes, and we've got a huge game coming up, and we know that we need to be at our best for that, so not looking too far ahead. 'I'm sure Scott has, but I definitely haven't.' Moore has been supportive of Kelly's career, regularly attending her games as well as celebrating her achievements online. During their final Euro match, Kelly's shinpads bore an image of her and Moore kissing during their wedding, a touching tribute to their relationship. Got a story?
