New ‘time-slip' book that's a must-read for His Dark Materials fans
Phillip Pullman's fantasy series, which featured titles including Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, was suitable for all ages, doubling as a coming-of-age tale focused on teenagers Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry as well as a more mature read with allusions to philosophical and theological concepts.
Adam Howorth's exciting time-slip adventure merging past and present also has shades of Kazuo Ishiguro (Never Let Me Go, Klara and the Sun) and Angela Carter (The Magic Toyshop, Wise Children), but is very much its own thing. The author's highly original work 'explores the nature of faith and existence, through the dual lens of childhood innocence and increasingly desperate parenthood'.
But Fallen Feathers, whose plot is anchored by a mysterious book that changes the course of many lives over several time periods, is a highly original read. The central character is Elizabeth Fairchild, a child who goes missing during a rare lunar eclipse known as a super blood moon.
The synopsis reads: 'The race is on to find her before the eclipse is over and she is lost forever. From the discovery of another local girl that went missing years before and a book revealing an ancient prophecy that Elizabeth is a special, golden child, the past collides with modern day life in this spellbinding, epic tale of family, love and dangerous secrets.'
Among the book's fans are Stephen Fry, who described the 'enthralling' book as 'a serious achievement, with The Independent editor Geordie Greig calling it 'original and arresting'.
Fallen Feathers is being published on 28 October.

"Some of my life's greatest memories are those simple moments at home," Martin said, "playing with my kids in the garden, holding Harley and Roman as babies, and singing with my wife in the car. "These are moments that truly define our lives," Martin added. "Sharing these personal glimpses allows people to see how small, intimate moments become the big memories we want to go back to over again." The majority of people regularly revisit cherished memories on their phones either to reflect on special moments, boost their mood, or share their good times with others. In fact, two thirds value their digital memories just as much as physical keepsakes. But almost half worry about forgetting important life events, as they expressed concern about losing memories involving loved ones. Therefore, capturing photographs and videos proves essential to preserving these experiences. Generally, adults will revisit these pivotal memories on their mobiles approximately four times monthly, with 12 per cent estimating they possess over 10 hours of stored footage. Annika Bizon, from Samsung, which has Galaxy AI enabled within its slimmest foldable yet, said: "Our research shows that over 40 per cent of us take photos and videos for the sole purpose to not forget our best memories. "It allows you to capture and revisit the memories you never want to forget, feeling their warmth and emotion time and time again." Welcome to Luigi: The Musical, the runaway San Francisco fringe hit that might just be singing and tap-dancing its way to New York and Los Angeles. After a sold-out run at the Taylor Street Theater and a larger move to The Independent, this surrealist prison satire—featuring Sean 'Diddy' Combs, Sam Bankman-Fried and alleged killer Luigi Mangione as cellmates—has become a cultural moment. The creators are currently eyeing the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August, with New York and L.A. productions in active discussion. While no dates have been confirmed, early buzz and interest from out-of-town producers suggest Luigi could find its way to bigger stages soon. Audiences have been packing the theater—sometimes standing along the walls—to watch Jonny Stein's heartthrob Luigi croon about martyrdom, back pain and bureaucracy. And while the Chronicle panned the show, that review is now baked into the script as a meta joke.
