Orioles' Trevor Rogers still looking for first victory over Braves

Reuters7 hours ago
July 6 - Baltimore left-hander Trevor Rogers will try to change his disappointing history against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday when the visiting Orioles go for a three-game sweep on Sunday.
Baltimore has won the first two games of the series, 3-2 on Friday and 9-6 in 10 innings on Saturday, against the reeling Braves, who have lost eight of 10 and three in a row.
Baltimore has not swept a season series against Atlanta since 2015.
Rogers (1-0, 2.05 ERA) will be matched against Atlanta right-hander Grant Holmes (4-7, 3.47) and try to beat the Braves for the first time in his career.
Rogers, who came up in the Miami organization, has seen plenty of Atlanta over the years. In nine career starts against the Braves -- he's only seen more action against Nationals, Mets and Phillies -- Rogers is 0-7 with a 5.57 ERA with 44 strikeouts and 15 walks in 42 innings. He went 0-2 with a 4.22 in two starts against the Braves in 2024.
Rogers was acquired from the Marlins last year. He began the season on the injured list because of a right knee subluxation being before making his season debut with the Orioles on May 24.
In four starts since being activated, he has had only one start shorter than five innings. His best performance came on June 23 when he threw eight shutout innings against the Rangers. He came back on Monday to throw 5 1/3 innings and allow two runs at Texas.
"Just everything that's surrounding him, watching maybe struggle a little bit last year when we got him and just kind of the flack that the organization got for him," Baltimore manager Tony Mansolino said. "We saw a guy that looked pretty good to me."
Rogers gave credit to the coaching staff for helping him get back to the major leagues.
"We really just broke down mechanics and what I can improve on to try to get my velocity back and I think we're seeing that," Rogers said. "I'm just really happy with where things are right now."
Holmes has been a model of consistency for the Braves since joining the rotation. In 17 starts this year, Holmes has pitched at least five innings 14 times. Over his last three starts, Holmes has had two scoreless stints and allowed only two runs in 16 2/3 innings, an ERA of 1.08. He threw six shutout innings against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday with 10 strikeouts in his last outing. It was his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season.
"I don't ever expect to go out there and get that many swing-and-misses," Holmes said. "But I do feel like my stuff is good enough to get that. But to say I think that I could go out there and get it quite often would be kind of dumb, as they say."
Holmes has never faced the Orioles.
The Orioles may be forced to make a move to add a catcher. Gary Sanchez left Saturday's game with right knee pain after a play at the plate. That leaves Jacob Stallings as the only healthy catcher on the roster. Baltimore already has catchers Chadwick Tromp (back), Adley Rutschman (oblique) and Maverick Handley (concussion) on the injured list.

Ben Shelton's sister booed by Wimbedon crowd when job revealed

Ben Shelton launched a public plea for his sister to get some extra time off from her job at investment bank Morgan Stanley so she could remain at Wimbledon to cheer for him. It worked. After advancing to face Italy's Lorenzo Sonego on Monday in the fourth round, Shelton spoke in an on-court interview in front of a crowd that included his sister, Emma, and his girlfriend, United States women's national team star Trinity Rodman. "I've been playing well this week. It's not just been me here. I have a great team. My parents are here. My girlfriend's here. 'Also, my sister's here. She's been here for every match that I've played this tournament so far. She's been the lucky charm," said the 10th-seeded Shelton, a 22-year-old American who has appeared in two Grand Slam semi-finals. "But she has work back in the US, starting on Monday. She works for Morgan Stanley." That comment drew some jovial boos from spectators as Emma embarrassingly covered her face with her hands. "If any of you all have some (connections) and get her a couple extra days off so she can (stay and) we can keep this rolling," Shelton continued after his 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Marton Fucsovics of Hungary on Saturday, "that'd be great." Sure enough, hours later, Emma posted a short video on Instagram in which Ben is heard asking her, "You got the week off or what?" She jumps up and down with her arms raised and a wide smile, and Ben says, "Shoutout, Morgan Stanley." The caption reads: "thank you MS" with three blue heart emojis and "return flight: cancelled." Ben Shelton, who has won all nine sets he's played in the first week at the All England Club, takes on Italy's Lorenzo Sonego on Monday. The American previously beat Sonego in the Australian Open quarter-finals in January.

Cameron Norrie vs Nicolas Jarry: Score and latest Wimbledon updates

Big-serving world No 143 Jarry is aiming to reach the maiden major quarter-final of his career. After coming through qualifying in Roehampton, he fought back from two sets down to knock out eighth seed Holger Rune in the first round and then dispatched American Learner Tien and Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca. The 6ft 6in won his only previous tour level meeting with Norrie, a straight-sets success at the 2018 Miami Open. 'It's a great match to play, I'm excited for it,' said Norrie. 'I think he's one of the most dangerous players on the tour when he's confident, and he is confident. He beat Holger in a crazy match. I think he looks like a guy with nothing to lose. He's so dangerous. He's got one of the best serves on tour. I think he likes the grass a lot. I'm going to have to really raise my level from how I played [in round three].'

Caitlin Clark is caught trolling WNBA referee as Indiana Fever slip to miserable loss without sidelined star

Despite spending her fifth straight game on the sidelines, Caitlin Clark still managed to get caught up with the referees Saturday night. Clark, who is currently out with a lingering groin injury, watched on as her Indiana Fever teammates blew a fourth-quarter lead in the final minute of an eventual 89-87 defeat to the Los Angeles Sparks. The 23-year-old spent the night on the bench but still managed to share a hilarious moment with an official. During a timeout, Clark's hilarious antics were caught on camera as she appeared to high-five a referee. The former Iowa star had been hyping up her teammates, including Sophie Cunningham, as she dapped them up before turning to do the same to the official. i love her so much 😭😭😭 — chris (@chrisclxrk) July 6, 2025 Caitlin Clark watched her Indiana Fever teammates from the bench once again Saturday During the contest, Clark shared a hilarious moment with WNBA referee Jason Alabanza The referee, however, didn't fall for the bait and left her hanging before giving her a playful nudge on the shoulder. Whether Clark's gesture was an intentional prank or an honest case of mistaken identity, she found the moment hilarious as she scampered back to the bench giggling. However, while Clark still appeared to be managing to have fun on the court, her teammates were not. Earlier in the week, Indiana won its first trophy since 2012 by securing the Commissioner's Cup on the road against the Lynx. On Thursday, the Fever defeated A'ja Wilson and Las Vegas by 27. But after two dominant wins earlier in the week over the Minnesota Lynx and Las Vegas Aces, that streak came to an end as the Fever lost to 10th-place Western Conference rivals Los Angeles for the second time in nine days. The team are now 4-4 with her on the court and 5-5 with the phenom watching from the sidelines this season. Saturday's miserable loss came two weeks before the WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis, where Clark was voted a captain despite her multiple absences. She was named an All-Star Game captain by being one of the two players receiving the most fan votes. Lynx star Napheesa Collier and Clark will now have the opportunity to draft from a pool of the other WNBA All-Stars to create two teams ahead of the festivities. Clark gets her second All-Star selection in her sophomore professional season, having represented 'Team WNBA' in last year's extravaganza against Team USA before the Paris Olympics . Before Clark's second multi-game injury absence of the season , her teammates were rallying around her after a few dismal performances. Despite Clark's injury-return game against the New York Liberty on June 14, after missing five games, and the scrappy contest against the Connecticut Sun a few days later, the WNBA phenom's usually sharpshooting touch has been anything but ironclad. Against the Seattle Storm, Clark was 3-for-13 from the field, including an 0-of-6 mark from 3-point range. In the Fever's two previous games before Tuesday night's victory, Clark combined for a 1-of-17 mark from beyond the arc, an unimaginable two-game line by the lofty standards set by the point guard.
