Jenna Ortega Reveals Why She Dropped Out of "Scream 7": 'It Was All Kind Of Falling Apart'
Jenna Ortega has opened up about her exit from "Scream 7" amid the fallout from Melissa Barrera's firing from the franchise.
In an interview with
The Cut
, Ortega, who played Tara Carpenter in 2022's 'Scream' and 2023's 'Scream VI,' said that her exit from the long-running horror franchise was not due to a scheduling conflict as originally reported.
She exited the seventh movie in November 2023. She said at the time it was due to her 'shooting schedule.'
'It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling,' Ortega added. 'The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart. If 'Scream VII' wasn't going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn't seem like the right move for me in my career at the time.'
The 'Melissa stuff' refers to Ortega's 'Scream' co-star Melissa Barrera, who was fired from 'Scream 7' due to social media posts she put up about Israel and Palestine.
News of Ortega's exit followed one day after Barrera's firing, which naturally led to speculation that Ortega was leaving the franchise out of support for Barrera. Ortega's interview with The Cut now confirms that to be the case.
Barrera was fired from 'Scream 7' due to her social media posts supporting Palestine and criticizing Israel for 'genocide and ethnic cleansing.'
Franchise producer Spyglass Media Group said in a statement to Variety at the time: 'Spyglass' stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.'
After Barrera's firing, 'Scream 7' director Christopher Landon posted and deleted a statement on X that read: 'Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.' About a month later, Landon exited the film and wrote on social media: 'It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it's time to move on.'
'Scream' moved on with Kevin Williamson, the franchise's original screenwriter, stepping in to direct the seventh installment, which will feature the return of franchise icon Neve Campbell.
Ortega moved on with both the second season of her Netflix smash hit 'Wednesday' and the box office success of last year's 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.'
'I've happened to join a lot of franchises, which is so great to be a part of legacy,' Ortega told The Cut. 'But for me, I'm really trying to prioritize new directors and original stories. I know on the outside, maybe people are looking at my choices like, 'Man, what the hell is this girl doing?' I never thought I would do a movie [like A24's 'Death of Unicorn']. But an original script is exciting. If I can help get it made, I love to do that.'

"Five Nights at Freddy's 2" Unveils Trailer
Yara Sameh The official trailer for 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' has been unveiled, teasing the continuation of Freddy Fazbear's chilling reign. The sequel from Universal and Blumhouse has a new tagline: 'Anyone can survive five nights. This time, there will be no second chances.' Emma Tammi returns as director. Josh Hutcherson, star of the first film, also returns for the sequel, which includes cast members Matthew Lillard, Elizabeth Lail and Piper Rubio. The first film, which earned $297 million at the global box office, featured Hutcherson playing a security guard at Freddys Fazbear's Pizza. It went on to become Blumhouse's highest-grossing movie ever. Hutcherson told Variety last year that the huge success was unexpected. 'We hoped it would connect with audiences,' Hutcherson said. 'But I don't think that anybody, even on our side of things, expected it to really connect the way that it did.' Hutcherson also hinted to Esquire the follow-up would be 'scarier.' 'There's more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way,' he said to the publication. Murtada Elfadl reviewed the first film for Variety, writing that 'Hollywood has not been successful at turning video games into movies — a disappointing streak that 'Five Nights at Freddy's' fails to correct.' Elfadl added that 'there's not enough of the animatronic creatures. Despite their distinctive look, they are not used effectively for horror or hilarity, missing the mark on both counts.' Jo Yu-ri and Son Ye-jin Team Up for Netflix K-Pop Drama "Variety"
Yara Sameh Netflix is doubling down on its Korean content with 'Variety,' a new series that pairs A-list talent Son Ye-jin with rising star Jo Yu-ri in a drama set in the world of K-pop. The casting represents a savvy move by the streamer, combining the proven global appeal of 'Crash Landing on You' veteran Son Ye-jin with Jo Yu-ri, whose breakout role as player 222 in 'Squid Game' Seasons 2 and 3 positions her as one of Korea's most promising young actors. Behind the camera, Netflix is betting on Kim Yong-hoon, whose 'Mask Girl' became a hit for the platform, spending four weeks in the Global Top 10 Non-English TV rankings and claiming the No. 1 spot in its second week. Known for his signature visual style and masterful tension-building in crime stories, Kim now turns his lens to the glamorous yet cutthroat world of K-Pop, exploring the fierce desires and ambitions that drive it. The series aims to examine the complex dynamics between industry executives and fans. Son Ye-jin's Se-eun, a top entertainment executive fighting to revive a struggling idol group, reflects the high-stakes nature of Korea's entertainment business. Meanwhile, Jo Yu-ri's Seung-hui — an obsessive fan — allows the former Iz*One member to explore the fan-idol dynamic from a perspective she knows intimately. Jo Yu-ri's casting is particularly noteworthy given her unique position as both a former K-pop idol and emerging dramatic actor. Her transition from the music industry to Netflix's prestige content slate mirrors the broader evolution of Korean entertainment, where boundaries between different media sectors continue to blur. The project reunites Netflix with powerhouse production partners CJ ENM Studios and UNU, part of the streamer's ongoing investment in Korean content that has paid massive dividends following the global success of originals like 'Squid Game' and 'Kingdom,' as well as internationally distributed hits like 'Crash Landing on You.' For Son Ye-jin, 'Variety' represents another strategic Netflix partnership as she continues to build her post-'Crash Landing on You' career. The actor is also attached to Park Chan-wook's 'No Other Choice' and Netflix's period drama 'Scandals,' positioning her as one of Korea's most in-demand talents across both film and streaming platforms. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

"Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse" Release Delayed by 3 Weeks
Yara Sameh Spider-Man fans will have to wait just a little bit longer for 'Beyond the Spider-Verse.' The third installment in Sony's popular web-slinging animated trilogy has shifted its release date back by three weeks, from June 4, 2027 to June 25, 2027. Studio insiders tell Variety the move was made to capitalize on school-aged moviegoers — 100% of schools in the U.S. will be on summer break by the new date, as opposed to only 65% on June 4. 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse' is the conclusion to a trilogy that began with 2018's 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' and continued with 2023's 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.' Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson serve as directors for 'Beyond the Spider-Verse.' The screenplay is scripted by 'Spider-Verse' creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, alongside David Callaham. Lord and Miller will also produce with Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Jinko Gotoh. Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg are executive producing while Jessica Berri will serve as co-producer. At CinemaCon in March, Lord told the audience that the threequel would begin with protagonist Miles Morales as a fugitive on the run from every other spider in the multiverse, and hinted that 'Gwen and his other friends may or may not be enough to help him save the family that's been the leading part of the entire system.' 'Into the Spider-Verse' took home the Oscar for best animated feature at the 91st Academy Awards, and 'Across the Spider-Verse' landed a nod in the same category. The first entry grossed $384 million globally in addition, while the sequel raked in a mighty $690 million. Sony also added the animated comedy 'Buds' to the schedule for March 12, 2027 from Sony Pictures Animation. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language
