Watch: Orcas use seaweed tools to scratch each other's backs

Killer whales have been filmed fashioning seaweed sticks to scratch each other's backs in the first evidence of tool-making by marine mammals.
Scientists spotted the behaviour in drone footage of orcas swimming in the Salish Sea, off the coast of Washington state in the US.
The orcas were seen to bite off the end of a kelp stalk, position it between themselves and a partner and roll the kelp between their bodies for prolonged periods.
Dr Michael Weiss, of the Centre for Whale Research (CWR), said: 'We were amazed when we first noticed this behaviour.'
He added: 'The more observations we had, the more we realised they weren't just finding these pieces of kelp in the environment and grabbing them, they were actually fashioning these tools or these tools from complete kelp stalks.'
Whales are known to play with seaweed and are often seen draping it over their backs or wearing it as hats in a process called 'kelping'.
But this discovery is different because the kelp is deliberately selected, torn off and manipulated by two whales working together. Researchers have called the new behaviour 'allokelping', which means 'kelping with another'. The pieces of kelp the orcas use are around two feet long.
The Salish Sea whales have been studied since the 1970s, and their habits were thought to be well known. But new drone technology has allowed researchers to observe behaviour that they believe may have been happening for decades without being seen.
'Happening all the time'
Rachel John, a Master's student studying animal behaviour at the University of Exeter, said: 'We hadn't noticed 'allokelping' before because the videos being collected from our previous aircraft weren't of high enough quality, but the footage we're getting now shows this behaviour in great detail.
'I was watching one of those really close-up videos when I saw something that looked like a brown stick between two whales that were in contact with each other. We looked back at lots of videos and realised that rubbing kelp between their bodies wasn't just a one-off thing – it was happening all the time.
'And once we saw whales breaking off pieces of kelp intentionally, it became clear that this is not just play – this is something important in the social lives of the 'southern resident' killer whales.'
Over a 12-day study period, the whales performed 'allokelping' on eight of the days and were more likely to carry out the practice on closely related whales or similarly aged partners, leading experts to suggest that it may be a form of grooming.
Bull kelp stalk is firm and flexible, like a filled garden hose, with a slippery outer surface, which experts said made an ideal grooming tool.
The team also saw some evidence that whales with more moulting or dead skin were more likely to take part in 'allokelping', suggesting that it may also serve as a hygienic function.
Important for skin health
Prof Darren Croft, of the University of Exeter and CWR's executive director, said: 'We know touch is really important. In primates – including humans – touch moderates stress and helps to build relationships.
' Killer whales often make contact with other members of their group, touching with their bodies and fins, but using kelp like this might enhance this experience. It might also be important for skin health.
'Whales and dolphins have a variety of strategies to help them slough dead skin, and this may be yet another adaptation for this purpose.
'Brown algae like bull kelp also have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that may provide further benefits to the whales.'
Other killer whale pods have been spotted rubbing their bodies on smooth stone beaches, possibly to remove dead skin and parasites. However, the Salish Sea whales have not been seen doing this, suggesting that the kelp may offer an alternative solution.
The researchers said it was unclear whether the grooming behaviour was entirely unique to this population or more widespread among other whale populations and species.
The study was published in the journal Current Biology.

Now, researchers say that eating any processed meat and other foods leaves Americans at a heightened risk for chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and colorectal cancer. The conditions result in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people each year. 'Habitual consumption of even small amounts of processed meat, sugary drinks, and trans fatty acids is linked to increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease and colorectal cancer,' Dr. Demewoz Haile, a research scientist at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle, told CNN this week. Analyzing data from more than 60 previous related studies, the researchers found that eating processed meat – as little as just one hot dog a day – was associated with at least an 11 percent average increase in type 2 diabetes risk and a 7 percent increase in colorectal cancer risk. Those who drank a sugar-sweetened beverage had an 8 percent average increase in type 2 diabetes risk and a 2 percent increase in ischemic heart disease risk. The study builds on years of research tying processed foods to higher risks of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. The Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting these foods and drinks, including sodas, hot dogs, and sausages. Although, researchers say it remains unclear exactly what aspects of processed foods pose potential health risks. It could be due to inflammation, Dr. Minyang Song, an associate professor of clinical epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan Schoo of Public Health, told CNN. He was not involved in the latest study. Processed meats also often contain chemicals known as nitrates nitrites that serve as a preservative and give the meat its rosy color. 'Nitrates convert to nitrites, and in the stomach's acidic environment, nitrites interact with certain components concentrated in meat to form N-nitroso compounds, which are potential carcinogens,' according to Harvard Medical School. Dr. Walter Willett, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, points out that processed meats contain other additives and are high in sodium, which is a risk factor for high blood pressure and heart disease. Dr. Ashkan Afshin, an assistant professor at the institute who was not a co-author of the new study, previously found that poor diet is responsible for more deaths globally than tobacco, high blood pressure, or any other health risk. "Poor diet is an equal opportunity killer," he said in 2019. "We are what we eat and risks affect people across a range of demographics, including age, gender, and economic status."

Alarming new map shows deadly arsenic levels in drinking water across the U.S.

A new map has revealed a disturbing truth about drinking water in the U.S. Scientists found millions of Americans may be regularly exposed to dangerous levels of arsenic, which is a naturally occurring element in soil and rock that seeps into groundwater over time. Using data collected between 2017 and 2019, researchers mapped population-weighted arsenic levels in community water systems. Alarming hotspots were found in parts of Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington, where levels exceed 5 micrograms per liter (µg/L), a point considered hazardous to human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a maximum arsenic level of 10 µg/L, or 10 parts per billion, in in drinking water. But research has shown that even lower levels can increase the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and developmental issues. Moderate-to-high levels (between 1μg/L and 5 µg/L) were found in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas and Idaho. While some states have low overall arsenic exposure, the map shows pockets of chronic contamination that disproportionately affect rural and low-income populations, many of whom may be unaware of the risks. Some studies suggest that more than two million Americans may be exposed to arsenic in their water supply, though not all at levels above the EPA's 10 μg/L limit. The map was created by scientists at Columbia University who utilized records from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assess arsenic levels across specific regions. The team collected data to determine arsenic levels in each Zip Code Tabulation Area, geographic zones defined by zip codes, based on 13,998 participants across 35 sites from 2005 to 2020. The map reveals the highest arsenic concentrations, exceeding 5 μg/L, in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, where industrial and agricultural activity may contribute. Sheridan Haack, a research hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, previously said that several counties in Michigan have elevated levels of arsenic. Counties in the Thumb had the highest levels in the state, along with Oakland, Washtenaw, and Ingham counties. New York's southern tier, particularly around Binghamton, features bedrock and soils that may contain arsenic-bearing minerals that release the element into groundwater under certain conditions. This is a common phenomenon in parts of the Northeast, where glacial deposits and sedimentary rock layers can concentrate arsenic. California's Central Valley, known for intensive farming, also emerged as a hotspot. Other critical areas included Pennsylvania's western counties near Pittsburgh, Tennessee's eastern Appalachian areas, Utah's northern Cache and Weber counties, Arizona's southwest near Yuma, and Oregon's Willamette Valley. Concerned citizens can use at-home filters to reduce their arsenic risk, but popular brands like Brita likely aren't effective at getting rid of arsenic Instead, people can look for reverse osmosis systems, activated alumina filters or anion exchange resins, according to EcoWater Systems. A 2023 study by a separate team from Columbia found that arsenic in drinking water was linked to an increased risk for heart disease. They examined the health records of 100,000 Californians over 23 years and compared the data to their estimated exposure to arsenic in drinking water. They found that people exposed to high levels of the toxic metal for a decade or more were 42 percent more likely to develop heart disease. The study author, Dr Tiffany Sanchez, an environmental and molecular epidemiologist, suggested that current policy on the amount of arsenic allowed into drinking water may need to be re-examined. 'Our results are novel and encourage a renewed discussion of current policy and regulatory standards,' she said.

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University have been tracking 52 individuals for a month, quizzing them six times every day via their smartphones on whether they had expressed amore, or had received some in return. In this context, the researchers interpreted 'love' broadly: spending time with someone close, gift giving, or expressing affection through words. The conclusion was one Messrs Lennon and McCartney would welcome: when people expressed love to others, they tended to feel more loved in return. However, the study found the reverse was not necessarily true: receiving affection from others did not automatically make people more generous with their love. The researchers admit they expected a two-way relationship: 'It was somewhat surprising to find that increases in feelings of being loved didn't increase expressions of love over time.' Their conclusion is that some individuals are better at receiving affection than giving it. • Why small acts of affection may be the key to feeling more loved yourself The power of love goes deeper than self-fulfilment. Participants in the study reported other psychological benefits. Those who felt more loved scored better on average when it came to mental health and feelings of loneliness. Such studies should always be treated with caution, given their observational nature. But at its heart is a timeless truth: saying 'I love you' costs nothing but can mean everything.
