Sacred Games was the first Indian original series that Netflix ever produced. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the show was critically acclaimed, and largely seen as the conduit to a new era of bolder, more challenging programming. The series was based on the book of the same name by Vikram Chandra, and was co-directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap. While it remains one of the most acclaimed series that the Indian streaming industry has produced, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said that it was perhaps not the ideal way to enter the Indian market.
In an appearance on Nikhil Kamath's podcast, Sarandos admitted that the Indian market is a difficult one to crack, mainly because Indian consumers are inherently suspicious of subscription. Netflix has taken a more populist approach to programming in recent years, and has struck deals with the likes of TV mainstays Kapil Sharma and Ekta Kapoor. During the conversation, Sarandos spoke about Sacred Games, and suggested that it might have painted Netflix out to be too high-brow for the Indian consumer.

Asked about India as a market, and the reality that Netflix doesn't have a significant share of it yet, Sarandos said, 'It took us a couple of years to get the product-market fit right. Our very first Indian original show was Sacred Games. And I thought, 'This is going to be great. People in India love movies. This is a TV show that feels as big as a movie, it has movie stars.' What's interesting about it is that it was very, very novel, but what I didn't understand that we were introducing a brand new kind of entertainment in a country the size of India.'
He continued, 'For me, if I did it all over again, would I have done Sacred Games a couple of years later, and did things that were more populist (instead)? Maybe. But we knew that India was going to be a slower journey to get to where we wanted to get to. But it's a great prize, at the end of the day. The addressable market is growing in the next couple of years in India, so it's exciting.'
Sacred Games was unofficially cancelled after two seasons. Kashyap said that plans for a third season were underway, but Netflix got cold feet after the controversy that erupted around Prime Video's Tandav. He told Mashable India, 'Vikram Motwane was driving Sacred Games. Ten days before I was supposed to go shoot Mukkabaaz, he asked me to come on board. I told him I was always interested, but they had a problem with me. Some local people had told them that I didn't have a female audience. It was my zone, and they eventually came around… A season three was supposed to come out, but they shut it down, Netflix would know why.'
He also criticised Sarandos and Netflix in a social media post following the success of Adolescence, and said that the Indian branch of the streamer wouldn't dare greenlight something like it. 'Netflix India is a totally opposite sh**show. If they were pitched this, most probably they would have rejected it or turned it into a 90 minute film (that too seems like an impossibility because it doesn't have an ending that is black and white),' he wrote.

Rangeen web series review Cast: Viineet Kumar Siingh, Rajshri Deshpande, Taaruk Raina, Seeba Chaddha Creator: Amardeep Galsin, Amir Rizvi Star rating: ★ In a country where sex-related crimes and sexual repression are at an all-time high, one would expect that a show like Rangeen, now available to watch on Prime Video, would treat the subject of male sex work with some amount of sensitivity and respect. Unfortunately, keeping that expectation put me on the wrong track to begin with, because Rangeen does not know whether to empathise with its protagonist or laugh at him, so as a case study, it attempts both at one go and ends up doing neither. Vineet Kumar Siingh plays a journalist turned gigolo in Rangeen. The premise Rangeen begins with Adarsh (Viineet Kumar Siingh), who runs a local newspaper. He is too busy trying to make ends meet and make sure that things are in place at work to even notice how lonely his wife, Naina (Rajshri Deshpande), feels, even when he is present at home. Then comes the shocking revelation when he catches her with a young gigolo named Sunny (Taaruk Raina). Adarsh loses it, and Naina leaves. His humiliation now drives him to seek what it is that he lacks, and this curiosity leads him to take up the job of a gigolo himself. He wants to experience this and prove that he is no less. If I thought I didn't understand men, maybe the character of Adarsh would be the prime example to prove my point. None of what Adarsh does next makes sense. It is a series of baffling character choices, none of them attuned to any iota of emotional unrest. One fails to understand Adarsh as he chases the goal of becoming a gigolo, letting his journalism instincts go like it meant nothing to him, and refuses to allow some common sense into him, even when that arrives from the elusive madam, Sitara (Sheeba Chadha), who is running the gigolo business. In the same chain of events, we follow the parallel tracks of Naina as she takes refuge in her parents' house, and that of Sunny, who is revealed to work in a local meat shop. What doesn't work Rangeen is a show that is utterly confused about the subject of sex work, one that piles up a series of bizarre situational plot twists and shocks. The scenes that follow after Adarsh ruins and embarrasses his way through the trial session are so clueless and unnecessary in their context- we are seeing a man setting up for his own humiliation. Are we meant to laugh at him then? The writing seems peculiarly rushed and unsupervised, running around in circles and barely aware of the next steps once the central crisis is in place. Look, it says, a man so desperate to prove himself. Hear, as this woman displays her nonchalance and strength to say there is nothing wrong with cheating. What is most jarring is the comic background score that continuously underlines and sets up the tone of the series in most parts. I could almost hear the disclaimer of a scene ending with the phrase- 'Thoda halka rakhte hain.' The show is obsessed with keeping the punchlines light, the observations colourful. Therefore, it forgets the very desire, the primal need that these people crave. Sex is as intimate as anything human there is, but the makers of Rangeen seem to have made up their mind that sex work also includes some provocation that is meant to be seen through a lighter lens. The tonal inconsistency snatches away from any emotional connection with the characters, and we are left with a bunch of foolish people running blindly around the same circle. Final thoughts Rangeen has barely any insight into the sexual repression that a country like India deals with. Perhaps it does not want to deal with it in the first place, because nowhere is the psychological inquiry present. The characters speak as if they are joking all the time, speaking like cardboard cutouts and in urgent need of a therapist. Even in Sunny's track, there is a shocking absence of the socio-political dread of belonging to a certain class and community. He seems to be living without any idea of where he is or what his future looks like. Only Rajshri Deshpande's presence reflects an awareness of the responsibilities of playing a character like Naina. She seems to be working overtime in a show that does not know where to start the dialogue, so she fills the dialogue with her mere presence. Viineet Kumar Siingh seems to be as confused as Adarsh himself, and there's hardly anything to write home about. Even the chain-smoking bit feels misplaced when there is no emotional context. He also has a rather patriarchal undertone to his view of the relationship that magically disappears somewhere along the line. How? Why? Better to ask no questions and dive along, because what's more fun than shaming sex and desire? More than just a vision check, a show like Rangeen needs to open its eyes first.

A crowd of people dressed in sparkling lehengas, sarees, and sherwanis walking into a richly decorated hall to the sound of a dhol band is an image quintessential to Indian weddings. What if we told you that you didn't have to get married or be invited to a wedding, to experience the excitement of it all – sangeet, mehendi, and wedding chaat stalls included? That is exactly what 'fake wedding' or 'fake sangeet' events gaining popularity across the country among Gen Z, aims to do. Bengaluru too, has seen a few of these events with Big Fat Fake Wedding hosted at JW Marriott seeing around 2,000 people in attendance, priced at `4,000 for men. 'It was the hottest topic in town – everyone went out their way to get a new fit made and go all out with dressing in traditional wear,' says Tanishka Choudhary, 20, a fashion student attendee. The appeal of such events to participants, mainly in their 20s, is being able to celebrate the 'dhoom dhaam' of weddings without the pressure or judgement of relatives. Choudhary says, 'Gen Z doesn't really believe in marriage so concepts like this are appealing because it's a way to have fun and enjoy weddings without having to worry about marriage or judgement.' The metropolitan nature of Bengaluru too, has contributed to the popularity of fake weddings, according to Kaushal Chanani, the co-founder of 8club, the organisers of the JW Marriott event. 'A lot of the attendees were from other parts of India – these events are prominent in cities where a lot of people are not regularly going to family events or family functions, because people want to build their own community with this.' Another fake wedding event that saw a full house is Shaadi Mubarak hosted by Vibhav Kumar Modi's Dark Vibe Society and two others, which sought to bring the wedding experience to the queer community, giving participants an experience the law still denies. 'The idea came from thinking of what it would feel like for queer people who are not allowed to get married in India, to be a part of a marriage free from judgement,' says Modi, adding that they did away with gender norms evident in weddings. 'We had wedding games like a contest between partners to find a ring in the milk and a tug of war game without a groom and bride's side. We also had a sangeet led by drag performers.' Fake wedding nights have gained virality on social media with youngsters making reels gaining millions of views. With the social media attention, some have criticised the concept saying that Gen Z is not giving traditions the respect they are due but Prathiban, the GM of Raahi Neo Kitchen and Bar, has a rebuttal, 'We are used to theme nights like a white night, red night, one night in Paris or Jamaica, etc. This is more like a sangeet-themed DJ night than a real wedding. We don't have rituals, just the decor, food and music is like a sangeet.' This was priced at `2,000 for couples, redeemable against food and drinks. While Delhi has been the epicentre of fake weddings events in India with at least one happening each week, Bengaluru is just beginning to catch on, notes Chanani, explaining the difference. 'People in Delhi love to hop on the trend but Bengaluru's behaviour is different in terms of event organisers. They don't want to look like they are copying someone's concept. But we are in talks with a few organisers to bring it back to Bengaluru,' he says, noting that there's been interest from tier two, three and four cities as well with a search on social media showing fake shaadis hosted in Kolhapur, Jaipur and Dehradun too. 'We are seeing a lot of traction from small cities like Bhopal, Rajkot, that want to bring this to their community. We've gotten around 50-60 requests to collaborate in the weeks after the Bengaluru event went viral,' adds Chanani.
