Fire service shares Hotspur Press update as cordon remains 11 days on from blaze

Yahoo9 hours ago
Hotspur Press is being inspected every day after last week's devastating blaze - but the site remains unsafe.
Flames soared from the historic former mill last Monday afternoon (June 23), with an inferno leaving much of the building crumbling to the ground.
The Manchester Evening News revealed on Wednesday how the city centre site has been deemed 'too unsafe' for a full investigation into the cause of the fire to begin.

It's understood that partial demolition is needed to take place before authorities can carry out the full inspection.
In an update shared this morning (Friday), Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed it was continuing to inspect the building for any hot spots, with work to determine the 'next steps' for the site still ongoing.
A GMFRS spokesperson said: "The fire at Hotspur Press has been extinguished and the building remains cordoned off for peoples' safety with crews inspecting the building daily to check for hot spots.
"GMFRS is working closely with Greater Manchester Police, local authority partners and the building owners to work on next steps and ensure a safe and thorough investigation can be completed."
Around 140 residents were forced to evacuate nearby apartments after the fire broke out last Monday. A major incident was declared and later stood down.
A cordon remains on Cambridge Street surrounding the Hotspur Press site.
A spokesperson for MCR Property Group, which owns the site, said earlier this week: "We continue to work with our development partner Manner, alongside GMFRS, GMP and Manchester City Council's Planning and Building Control teams, to manage the Hotspur Press site following the fire.

"The immediate priority has been to make the structure safe, both for the general public and to allow investigation teams to carry out their work.
"This process is being undertaken carefully and in stages, with every effort made to retain as much of the building as possible, in line with structural guidance."
The Hotspur Press site was earmarked for redevelopment by Manner, with the façade and iconic 'Percy Brothers' signage due to be retained.

Man arrested in connection with 5 sex assaults around Health Sciences Centre

A man has been arrested in connection with a string of random sexual assaults against a teen and several women this week in and around Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre. Police said a 28-year-old man was taken into custody Thursday night after he was arrested on Spence Street just blocks from where the assaults occurred one night earlier. He has been charged with five counts of sexual assault, one count of sexual interference, three counts of assault and one count of carrying a concealed prohibited weapon, device or ammunition, a news release from police said Friday. The Manitoba Nurses Union said Thursday that long-standing safety and security concerns among HSC staff persist in the core-area hospital, including in the hospital tunnel. Police previously said officers were called Wednesday around 8 p.m. about reports of four random sexual assaults on women around the HSC campus area. The first, around 7 p.m., was against a teenage girl walking near Elgin Avenue and Sherbrook Street. The second happened around 7:12 p.m. A woman who works at HSC was walking east on William Avenue near Furby Street when she was grabbed from behind and sexually assaulted. Another woman who works at HSC was walking in the hospital tunnel system when she was sexually assaulted around 7:42 p.m. Around 7:45 p.m., yet another woman employed at HSC was sexually assaulted and fell to the ground while she was walking south on Emily Street at McDermot Avenue. A fifth woman later reported being sexually assaulted that night on Notre Dame Avenue between Sherbrook and Langside streets, police said Friday when they confirmed an arrest had been made. The man remains in custody. The police sex crimes unit continues to investigate. One in 10 cars sold in UK made in China

One in 10 cars sold in the UK in June were made in China, according to the latest industry figures. New Chinese brands such as BYD, Jaecoo and Omoda are growing rapidly in the UK. There has been a particular surge over the past few months, at a time when most other G7 countries have levied significant extra tariffs against their imports. Around 18,944 cars made by Chinese-owned brands, including MG and Polestar, were sold in June, which is 10% of overall UK sales, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). That is up from 6% in the same month a year ago. Across the first half of this year, more than 8% - or 1 in 12 - cars sold were Chinese, up from 5% in 2023 and 2024. This was mainly but not exclusively electric vehicles. By comparison a study by Jato Analytics for the first five months of the year put Chinese brands at 4.3% of the market across the EU, and just 1.6% in Germany and 2.7% in France. Spain was higher though at 9.2%. Its analyst Felipe Munoz said: "The fact that the UK has not imposed tariffs is a big opportunity for the Chinese, along with the popularity of electric cars. "MG is also playing like a local brand, and unlike France and Germany, the UK doesn't have a big local industry to protect." However, some industry grandees have warned that the UK industry will struggle to compete, and Britain might have to introduce quotas. Chinese firms and their franchises have been buying up car showrooms. "Chinese manufacturers are producing cars which are better, cheaper and more innovative in every sector of the market," said John Neill, former SMMT President and ex-chief executive of Unipart. "If they are going to sell here we are going to have to get the Chinese to manufacture here." The government has so far faced little pressure from existing suppliers on copying the tariffs imposed by the EU, US, and Canada on electric cars. The majority of EU member states backed big taxes being imposed on imports of EVs from China, which can be as high as around 45%, and Canada announced its imposition of a 100% tax on Chinese made EVs. The EU and China are in negotiations to replace the tariff with a minimum price system. Some Chinese manufacturers are also in the process of opening factories in the EU which could export across Europe including the UK tariff-free. The SMMT said that one in four buyers of new cars in the UK are now purchasing electric cars - although the transition to electric has been driven by "unsustainable" discounting by manufacturers, says Mike Hawes, the SMMT's chief executive. "As we have seen in other countries, government incentives can supercharge the market transition," he said. The race to better 'the electric vehicle experience' China's electric cars are becoming slicker and cheaper - but is there a deeper cost?
