Kitty party scam: Bengaluru professor arrested for impersonating advocate and obstructing cops at police station

Time of India12-07-2025
Bengaluru: A 55-year-old PU college professor was arrested on charges of posing as an advocate and fighting with on-duty police officials inside a police officer's chamber recently.
The accused is identified as A Yoganand, a resident of Nandini Layout. According to the police, he is a professor at a private college.
The incident took place inside the office of the assistant commissioner of police (ACP) of Vijayanagar sub-division, located on the premises of Basaveshwaranagar police station. Police were questioning an accused identified as G Savita, who was arrested on charges of duping her 'kitty party friends' to the tune of at least Rs 5 crore, under the pretext of getting cheaper gold from abroad or securing higher returns for their investment.
Savita was taken into police custody for further questioning.
While the police were questioning her at the ACP's office, Yoganand, dressed in plain clothes, barged in, claiming that he was Savita's counsellor. He questioned the police on the grounds for Savita's arrest and sought more details of the case. "As he went on questioning, he saw the house keys of Savita placed on the table among other seized materials. Without permission or asking anyone, he grabbed the keys and started moving.

By then, police inspector Subramani K, attached to Govindarajanagar, and his staff, who had dropped into the ACP's office, saw Yoganand and enquired about the issue. "Subramani had worked as a police sub-inspector at Basaveshwaranagar station a few years back when Yoganand had appeared at the station on alleged charges of beating up a senior citizen.
Subramani immediately identified him and confirmed that he was not an advocate," the senior police officer said.
Quickly, senior police officials were alerted. Accordingly, Basaveshwaranagar police booked Yoganand for impersonating an advocate and obstructing the police from discharging their duties. He was arrested and produced before the court, which granted him bail.
"Yoganand is a high schoolmate and a a long-time friend of Savita. After learning the news of her arrest through media, he came to police station. But why he claimed to be an advocate and tried to take away Savita's house keys, we have to question him about it," the police said.

Questions arise over ‘ineffectivecrowd control, missing cops at site'

Haridwar: The Mansa Devi temple stampede has raised several questions over failure in proper crowd control and management by Haridwar district administration and police, as per locals. Many pointed out that adequate police presence on the pedestrian route and the entrance for better crowd control could have averted the tragedy, adding that the situation was exacerbated by unauthorised structures on the route. Mohan Lal, whose six-year-old nephew Arush died in the stampede, said, "Only if there were proper arrangements on the temple route, my nephew would've been alive today. There was no police presence on the narrow route. It was overcrowded with people moving up and down at the same time, leading to the congestion. Also, no one could move forward... Even after the incident, help arrived late." People started to panic when rumours spread that the temple gates were being closed, Lal said, adding: "It was a terrible sight." Video clips of the stampede showed a huge crowd of men, women and children stuck in a narrow passage leading to the temple. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Retirement Villages Near Sylhe Sadar Senior Living | Search Ads Undo Dozens of people, seemingly glued to each other and hardly moving, could only manage to hold the children above their heads, news agency PTI reported. Mahendra Pratap Singh, an eyewitness who saw the stampede from a rooftop a little distance away, was quoted by PTI as saying that excess crowd was "the only factor to the tragic incident." Ajay Jaiswal, a local, was also quoted by the agency as saying that the administration should have been more alert. "Mansa Devi is the biggest centre of attraction for devotees in Haridwar after Har Ki Pauri. Thousands of devotees come here every day. The crowd swells during the month of Sawan as a rule. Being a Sunday, the possibility of a larger crowd was very much there. So, the administration should have been more alert," he said. Haridwar-based social activist JP Badoni told TOI, "This tragedy could've been averted. Local administration is solely responsible. This is not the first such tragedy in Haridwar. However, lessons from the past have clearly not been learnt. There are over 200 illegally constructed shops along the Mansa Devi pedestrian route, many of which draw electricity illegally. Despite the area being a reserved zone, the forest department never took any action. The religious trust managing the temple also never addressed the growing risks." Badoni urged immediate legal steps against those responsible. Meanwhile, assuring a comprehensive review, DM Mayur Dixit told TOI: "The temple administration has been directed to employ private security. Crowd management protocols at religious sites will undergo review." Soon after the tragedy, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed disaster management secretary Vinod Kumar Suman to conduct a comprehensive assessment of crowd management, route planning and security measures across Uttarakhand's pilgrimage sites to prevent similar incidents in future.

'Death to Trump': EasyJet flight diverted to Glasgow after man's bomb threats, religious chants; tackled by passengers

Screen grab from X @NewsWire_US An EasyJet flight from London Luton to Glasgow was forced to make an emergency landing on Sunday after a passenger allegedly issued bomb threats mid air. A video of the incident, which quickly went viral on social media, shows a man standing in the aisle of the plane shouting 'Allahu Akbar.' He is also heard yelling 'death to America' and 'death to Trump,' before being tackled by fellow passengers and restrained on the cabin floor. The mid-air scare began when the man, 41, reportedly emerged from the toilet at the rear of the aircraft, shouting and raising his hands in the air. — NewsWire_US (@NewsWire_US) A 39-year-old passenger on board, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Sun: "He literally came out of the toilet shouting 'Allahu Akbar' with his hands above his head. Then he said 'I've got a bomb, I've got a bomb' - at this point people were confused. I thought he was joking, I mean it's a weird joke." According to the witness, the man grew aggressive toward the flight crew. He pushed the airline staff and was being aggressive towards them. He was a big guy, about six foot and they were these petite women," the passenger added, as cited by The Mirror. Chhattisgarh: 4 Maoists killed in Bijapur encounter; security forces recover arms and ammunition

In a significant counter-insurgency operation success, four reward-carrying Maoists were killed during a prolonged encounter with security forces in the dense forest region of Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, the police said on Sunday. The operation, launched by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) on July 26, was based on specific intelligence inputs regarding Maoist activity near the Basaguda and Gangaloor police station limits in the district's south-western corridor. The gunfight began in the evening and continued intermittently through the night. Among the deceased were two women cadres, all affiliated with the South Sub Zonal Bureau of the banned CPI (Maoist), said the official. The slain insurgents were identified as Hunga (ACM, Platoon 10), Lakkhe (ACM, Platoon 30), Bhime (ACM), and Nihal alias Rahul, a party member and bodyguard to the Bureau Communication Head. Collectively, they carried a bounty of Rs 17 lakh. Security personnel recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from the site, including one SLR rifle, one INSAS rifle, one .303 rifle, a 12 bore gun, a BGL launcher, a single-shot 315 bore rifle, and an AK-47. In addition, multiple magazines, live rounds, grenades, BGL cells, Maoist literature, and daily-use items were seized. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P. confirmed that the operation was part of an intensified anti-LWE campaign in the region. He noted that 425 hardcore Maoists have been neutralised between January 2024 and July 2025, attributing the success to strategic planning, operational courage, and community support. Despite challenging monsoon conditions -- marked by rugged terrain, dense foliage, and persistent rainfall -- security forces maintained high morale and operational readiness. The encounter underscores the state's continued efforts to dismantle Maoist strongholds and restore civil order in insurgency-hit zones. The operation remains on-going, with forces maintaining heightened alert across the Bastar division, which has historically been a hotbed of left-wing extremism.
