Over 70 Badin labourers freed from private jail in Punjab

Express Tribune11-07-2025
More than 70 labourers — including women and children from Badin — were allegedly held captive in a private jail by a landlord in Faisalabad's Farooqabad area, after being lured in with promises of agricultural work.
The labourers had travelled to Faisalabad for seasonal jobs such as rice planting and maize harvesting. However, upon demanding their due wages, they were reportedly denied payment by the landlord, who claimed he had already disbursed an advance sum of Rs1 million. The workers denied receiving any such payment, suggesting that the money may have been handed over to a labour contractor or agent instead.
According to the affected labourers, they were confined to the landlord's farmhouse under constant surveillance by armed guards. As days passed and food supplies dwindled, the conditions became desperate, with some workers going without food for up to two days.
The ordeal came to light when more than 40 labourers managed to escape the farmhouse and alert their families in Badin. The news quickly gained traction on social media, prompting the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) to take notice. The commission tasked its local team to investigate the matter and gather evidence for legal proceedings.
Following HRCP's intervention and growing public pressure, the landlord reportedly released the remaining captive labourers.
One of the victims, Abbas Mallah, shared a mobile number that helped confirm the identities of those still held. His relative, Ali Ghulam Mallah, revealed that the agent who had arranged the trip to Faisalabad, identified as Khero Kohli, had since gone into hiding and was unreachable.
Speaking to reporters after his release, Abbas Mallah said he and 33 fellow workers were stranded at Faisalabad railway station, awaiting financial help from relatives in order to return home to Hyderabad.
The freed labourers have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to take strong action against those responsible for their exploitation and to ensure they receive their unpaid wages.

CCP raids transformer material suppliers over suspected bid rigging

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) team has raided the offices of four suppliers involved in the provision of transformer reclamation materials to various power distribution companies (DISCOs). The raids were carried out simultaneously in Lahore and Gujranwala. These companies are suspected of being part of a cartel that manipulated bidding processes for transformer-related tenders. The CCP launched the raids as part of an ongoing enquiry into bid rigging practices in DISCO procurement. The enquiry was initiated after Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) raised concerns with the CCP regarding identical bids submitted by various suppliers. A review of bidding data revealed that the companies often quoted identical prices and appeared to rotate tenders among themselves. CCP imposes Rs1 billion in penalties on cartels, deceptive advertisers during FY2024-25 Such practices fall under Section 4(2)(e) of the Competition Act, 2010, which prohibits collusion in tendering. Bid rigging not only distorts fair competition but also causes significant financial losses to the public exchequer. If the ongoing enquiry confirms any form of collusion, the CCP will issue show-cause notices to the companies involved. The CCP has also urged the public to report any such anti-competitive behaviour. Whistleblowers may be eligible for cash rewards ranging from Rs200,000 to Rs2,000,000, depending on the value and verifiability of the information provided.

Lion cubs among 23 wild cats rescued in Punjab wildlife crackdown

Listen to article An illegal network involved in the sale and purchase of big cats, including lions, tigers, and leopards, has dismantled by Punjab Wildlife Rangers. In a series of operations, authorities recovered 23 big cats, several of them hidden in private homes. Among the seized animals were multiple lion cubs, officials confirmed. In Lahore, Wildlife Rangers have rescued five lion cubs from a posh residential area where they were being secretly kept. According to wildlife authorities, it has become increasingly common for individuals to buy newborn lions and tigers from private breeding farms as a hobby. A single cub is sold for between Rs800,000 and Rs1 million, they said. Valued for their exotic appearance, many of these animals are kept inside homes. However, officials warn that by six months of age, the cubs begin to exhibit wild behaviour, posing safety risks to both owners and surrounding communities. Officials revealed that some breeding farm owners were illegally relocating cubs from their facilities and selling them through unlicensed channels. Following a series of targeted crackdowns, authorities now say that this underground market has been dismantled. 10 SBCA officials sent to jail in collapse case

Judicial Magistrate South Kulsoom Sehato heard the case of Lyari building collapse and sent 10 accused, including senior officers of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) on judicial remand to jail. Police had produced the suspects before the magistrate following the completion of their physical remand. The suspects include Syed Irfan Haider Naqvi, Ashfaq Hussain, Mohammad Jalees Siddiqui, Syed Faheem Murtaza, Asim Ali Khan, Faheem Ahmed, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, Raheem Hussain Shah, Taj Mohammad and SBCA's additional director general Zargham Haider. According to the investigating officer (IO), the official records of the collapsed building could not be recovered, and further custody of the accused was required to obtain the documents. However, the court dismissed this request, ruling that the investigation could continue without extending their physical remand. Defence lawyer Zeeshan Rajpar argued, there was no prior complaint about the dangerous condition of the building. Another defence counsel, Javed Chhattari stated that the responsibility to provide building records rests with the section officer, who has become the complainant in this case rather than any affected individual. The court rejected the IO's request for further remand and ordered to send all the accused to jail, stressing that law enforcement can proceed with record recovery through the section officer without needing to keep the suspects in custody.
