Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani throws record heat but strikes out three times in loss
Shohei Ohtani threw the fastest pitch of his career at 101.7 mph and worked two efficient innings in his third mound start for the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing one hit and one walk against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.
It was the first start of more than one inning this season for the two-way superstar, who is working as an opener as he eases his way back into pitching.
The three-time MVP did not pitch last season, his first with the Dodgers, while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He made 86 mound starts over five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, going 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA.
On Saturday, Ohtani threw first-pitch strikes to all seven batters he faced and finished with 27 pitches, 20 for strikes.
He allowed a one-out single to Bobby Witt Jr. in the first and walked Maikel Garcia before throwing the 101.7 mph fastball on an 0-2 count to Vinnie Pasquantino, who grounded into a double play.
Ohtani retired the side in order in the second, fanning rookie Jac Caglianone on an 89 mph slider.
However, his day at the plate was less than stellar as he went 0-for-4 as the 9-5 loss. He struck out three times.
The 30-year-old has 29 homers this season as Los Angeles' primary designated hitter.

Los Angeles retires Candace Parker's jersey number in WNBA
Former Lady Vol Candace Parker's jersey number was retired by Los Angeles in the WNBA on Sunday. Los Angeles retired Parker's No. 3 at halftime of its, 92-85, loss to Chicago in a game that was televised by ABC. Parker also played for the Sky and led both organizations to WNBA championships. Chicago will retire the former Lady Vols' number later this season Parker played in the WNBA from 2008-23. She was selected No. 1 overall in the 2008 WNBA draft by Los Angeles. The former Lady Vol also played for Chicago and Las Vegas, winning championships with all three teams. Parker was the 2008 WNBA Rookie of the Year, a seven-time WNBA All-Star. She was also named league MVP during her rookie season and named WNBA MVP in 2013. Parker was a seven-time First-Team All-WNBA standout and the WNBA Finals MVP in 2016. The two-time Olympic gold medalist played at Tennessee from 2006-08 under head coach Pat Summitt. She led Tennessee to consecutive national championships in 2007-08. Former two-time WNBA MVP Candace Parker was honored by the Los Angeles Sparks, who retired her jersey during a ceremony at halftime of their game against the Chicago Sky on Sunday, June 29. Parker spent 13 seasons with the Sparks before joining the Sky as a free agent for the 2021 season. She spent two seasons playing at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, just 34 miles from where she went to Naperville Central High School.
