Toyota Motor Corp. has resumed airing commercials on Fuji Television Network Inc. for the first time since suspending them in January, following a sex scandal involving a celebrity associated with the broadcaster.
The automaker confirmed on July 29 that its commercials began airing again in late July during Fuji TV's late-night news program "FNN Live News Alfa."
Toyota stated that advertisements would be placed in ways approved by its customers and stakeholders. The company did not clarify whether ads would return to other time slots or programs.
The withdrawal of major advertisers from Fuji TV began earlier this year following allegations that renowned talk show host Masahiro Nakai sexually abused a Fuji TV news presenter.
The scandal sparked a widespread public backlash directed not only at Nakai but also at Fuji TV employees and executives involved, raising questions about the network's governance and crisis management.
Consumer goods giant Kao Corp. also announced plans to resume commercials on Fuji TV beginning Oct. 1.
Ads are scheduled to return to programs including "Sun! Shine" and "Nep League," as well as the network's Monday 9 p.m. drama slot.
Kao explained that its decision was based on sufficient progress made by the broadcaster in addressing the issue, including compensation to the victim, measures to prevent a recurrence, governance reforms and increased transparency.
Major food company Meiji Co. will also return to Fuji's commercial lineup, starting Aug. 1 across two programs.
The company cited notable corporate reforms and leadership changes as the reason for its renewed confidence in the network.
With the industry leaders resuming advertising, momentum may build for other companies to follow suit.

Pretty Chuu Idol Allegedly Sexually Assaulted by Producer's Boyfriend

A member of the recently formed idol group Pretty Chuu has allegedly filed a police report after claiming she was sexually assaulted and secretly filmed by Taichi Saito, the long-time boyfriend of the group's producer, Yurinya. The news was first leaked on X last Friday by a YouTuber who goes by the name of Korekore. He posted that 19-year-old Shuna Amamiya alleges she was 'secretly undressed and filmed by Taichi' and was impregnated after being 'assaulted while sleeping.' 'I am deeply saddened and feel a strong sense of responsibility that someone I trusted, Taichi Saito, committed such an extremely irresponsible and inconsiderate act,' she wrote. 'As a producer and an individual, I want to make it clear that I strongly denounce his actions and have completely severed all personal and professional ties with him.' The following day, Korekore posted a follow-up message on X , stating that Amamiya claimed 'there was no consent' and that she was 'in a drunken state.' However, according to Korekore, Saito alleges that they kissed and 'it was consensual.' Amamiya has reportedly requested medical records in order to clarify whether the pregnancy was related to the alleged assault or a previous relationship she was in. She told Korekore there was 'no falsehood' in her claims and that she has decided to withdraw from the music industry. EDITORIAL: Trump must not be allowed to insert ideology into AI responses

U.S. President Donald Trump at this year's Group of Seven summit (Asahi Shimbun file photo) U.S. President Donald Trump has announced an AI Action Plan with the goal of making the United States the world leader in development of artificial intelligence. It is a major change of direction from the Biden administration, which emphasized control of the risks associated with AI. The Trump administration wants to accelerate technology and infrastructure development through deregulation and increased investment. The action plan will encourage the export of AI technology to friendly nations in a bid for supremacy in competition with an emerging China. A surprising aspect of the plan is the level of intervention it envisages into the output from generative AI technology such as ChatGPT. National guidelines for AI risk control were revised to eliminate from answers references to diversity, equity and inclusion, widely known as DEI, and climate change. The federal government is supposed to sign contracts only with companies whose AI technology is objective and does not contain ideological bias. While the Trump administration says such measures are needed to protect freedom of speech and American values, the action plan conversely carries the risk of gagging free speech. To begin with, it is very difficult to establish neutral standards to help determine ideological bias. The bias could be defined according to the intent of the administration in power. DEI initially sought to counter discrimination based on gender, race, nationality or disability and to ensure fair opportunity for those who had been treated unfavorably in the past. Trump has long been negative about measures related to DEI and global warming. Since the start of his second term, he has implemented various steps reflecting that thinking. We cannot ignore the attempt to interfere with generative AI, which is spreading rapidly in society and people's daily lives. It is possible that the federal government's procurement conditions will become the standards regarding generative AI. That would have a major impact on Japan as it depends on the United States for much of its generative AI technology. Citing an example of bias in generative AI, Trump pointed to white male figures from American history who were transformed in AI answers into women or members of other races. Generative AI undertakes deep learning using a massive amount of data and subsequently goes through repeated tuning to produce answers. If there is bias in the data used for deep learning, the answers will reflect such bias and the tuning process could generate the wrong answer. Put another way, if the learning data is selected arbitrarily and certain algorithms are intentionally chosen during the tuning process, it would be possible to produce answers that reflected a certain bias. This is one characteristic of generative AI that we must always keep in mind. It could be used by iron-fisted regimes to gag free speech. It was pointed out that the generative AI technology released this year by the Chinese startup DeepSeek avoided or rejected answers that were inconvenient to Beijing, such as regarding the Tiananmen Square incident. Trump's version of intervention that seeks to delete certain references is fundamentally no different. --The Asahi Shimbun, Aug. 4

Fuji Media expects first annual operating loss since 2008

Fuji Media Holdings said Thursday that it expects to incur a consolidated operating loss of ¥12 billion ($79.5 million) for fiscal 2025, which would be its first full-year operating loss since becoming a holding company in 2008. The parent of Fuji Television Network previously projected ¥2.5 billion in profit for the year through March 2026. The downward revision reflects slower-than-expected recovery in advertising revenue, which slumped due to the group's poor handling of a sex scandal involving former popular TV personality Masahiro Nakai. In the previous year, Fuji Media earned an operating profit of ¥18.2 billion. The revenue forecast was also lowered to ¥546.6 billion from ¥561 billion. For April-June this year, Fuji Media logged a consolidated operating loss of ¥12.7 billion, against a profit of ¥6.5 billion a year earlier, as revenue slid 10.4% to ¥116.1 billion. It secured a net profit on the back of its robust real estate business and share sales, although it slumped 85.1% from a year earlier. Fuji TV posted an operating loss of ¥21.7 billion, against a profit of ¥1.2 billion a year earlier, on revenue of ¥25 billion, down 54.1%. It incurred a net loss of ¥18.9 billion, against the previous year's profit of ¥800 million. The number of commercial advertisers between April and July stood at 259, down by about 60% from a year before. But some major companies including Toyota Motor Corp. started coming back as sponsors in light of the group's reform efforts under a new management launched at a shareholders meeting in June.
