SANDAKAN: A high-level meeting between Sandakan Municipal Council President Walter Kinson and prominent businessman Tan Sri Andrew Liew has set the stage for ambitious economic transformation plans here. Andrew, who serves on the Sabah Economic Advisory Council and chairs the Andamy Group, hosted the municipal leader for discussions centred on positioning Sandakan as a regional economic hub.
Advertisement The business leader outlined a comprehensive development vision that capitalises on Sandakan's strategic location as Sabah's eastern gateway. His proposals include deeper economic integration with Indonesia and the Philippines, alongside focus on emerging sectors like green energy, biotechnology and marine industries. 'Sandakan has tremendous potential to lead in high-value sectors that can attract new industries and create sustainable economic growth,' Andrew said during the meeting, which also included MPS member Datuk Tony Liew Ja Hou. The development strategy extends beyond Sandakan's boundaries, with plans designed to stimulate coordinated growth across neighbouring districts including Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid.
Advertisement Tourism emerged as another key focus area, with discussions on creating a distinctive brand around eco-tourism, cultural heritage and island resort experiences. The approach aims to leverage Sandakan's historical significance, natural ecosystems and wildlife conservation assets. Infrastructure development features prominently in the blueprint, though Andrew pointed out the importance of preserving Sandakan's unique cultural and environmental values throughout the modernisation process. The meeting also addressed human capital development, with both leaders agreeing on the need for local talent cultivation and retention strategies to ensure economic benefits reach the community directly. Walter described the discussions as constructive and forward-thinking, noting the alignment between municipal priorities and private sector capabilities. Both parties characterised the current period as a critical opportunity window for Sandakan's transformation, emphasising the need for coordinated efforts between government, business and community stakeholders to maintain competitiveness in the regional landscape. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah Electricity welcomes SOGT maintenance rescheduling

Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity (SE), in a statement on Thursday, welcomed the rescheduling of maintenance works at the Petronas-owned Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) from 1 August to 5 August this year. The adjustment allows two independent power producers (IPPs) more time to switch their operations from gas to diesel fuel. This transition process requires careful planning to maintain a stable electricity supply across the state. SE expressed appreciation for the cooperation shown by all parties involved in ensuring smooth preparations. It also hopes the IPPs will carry out their technical adjustments efficiently and on schedule to support system stability in Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Government mulls EPF monthly pension payout option

Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: The government is exploring a proposal to offer monthly pension payouts under the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), complementing the existing lump-sum withdrawal option, The Edge Malaysia reported. According to the 13th Malaysia Plan report, the move aims to provide retirees with a more consistent income stream after retirement. The proposed mechanism would split EPF contributions into two parts — one for lump-sum withdrawals and another for a monthly pension upon retirement. At present, members can fully withdraw their EPF savings upon reaching 55 years old, with funds accumulated in three distinct accounts. Account 1, the Retirement Account, is reserved for post-retirement use, while Account 2 supports pre-retirement needs such as housing, education, and medical expenses. Account 3, introduced in 2024, is a more flexible option that allows members to withdraw funds at any time to manage short-term needs. The EPF, which recently declared a 6.3 per cent dividend for both conventional and Shariah savings, remains a key pillar in Malaysia's retirement landscape alongside funds like ASB, ASN, and Tabung Haji. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
