Indian stock market: Nifty 50 slips below 25,000 level. Where's it headed in short-term?
Indian stock market: Indian stock market benchmarks began Monday's session on a weak note, weighed down by uncertainty surrounding trade negotiations with the U.S. and disappointing earnings from Kotak Mahindra Bank, which affected investor sentiment. The BSE Sensex fell by 326 points, or 0.4%, to 81,136, while the Nifty50 declined 95 points, or 0.38%, to 24,736 around 9:18 am. However, markets quickly rebounded, recovering much of the initial losses by 9:40 am. The Nifty continued its downward trend on Friday, falling below the key support level of 24,900 to close at 24,837, weighed down by negative global signals and underwhelming corporate earnings. Persistent selling dominated the session, leading to a cautious and corrective movement in prices. ' The major supports are at 24450 and 24000, but we will begin the week expecting downsides to not extend beyond the 24750-650 region. A swing higher is expected this week, but oscillator divergences seen in intraday periodicities that have signalled the same, are yet to be visible in larger time frames. This gives room for downside momentum to prevail over for some more time. However, direct rise above 24922 could initiate short covering. In such a scenario, 25324 may be played for, even though 25000 region may resist initially,' said Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited. According to brokerage firm Choice Broking, Nifty is trading below its 20- and 50-day EMAs, indicating a bearish short-term trend. ' The next immediate support to watch is at 24,750, and if this level breaks, further correction may push the index down toward 24,580, near the 100-day EMA—an important technical support zone. On the upside, a decisive close above the 25,150 level would be needed to shift momentum positively, potentially opening targets near 25,500 and 25,700 in the coming week. Until then, the market outlook remains sideways to bearish, and a cautious stance with close monitoring of global and domestic triggers is advisable to navigate the prevailing volatility effectively,' the brokerage firm said. Support Levels: 24750 - 24600 Resistance Levels: 25000-25600 Overall Bias: Sideways to Bearish Bank Nifty ended lower on Friday, closing near 57,010 after facing resistance and rejection in the 57,200–57,300 zone, indicating ongoing consolidation with mixed momentum. The brokerage firm said that the index is currently range-bound, with immediate resistance around 57,000; a sustained breakout above this level could trigger fresh buying, targeting resistance at 57,630. ' Breaking beyond 57,630 may fuel stronger bullish momentum toward higher targets of 58,000 and 58,500. Conversely, on the downside, a break below the critical support level of 56,275 could lead to a deeper corrective move toward 55,550 and 55,150. Given the current range-bound price action and uncertain momentum, a cautious approach with sound risk management is advisable for the coming week. Watching for a decisive close above 57,000 resistance or a break below 56,275 support will be critical to identifying the next meaningful directional move in Bank Nifty,' it added. The government has announced the commission in January 2025 but is yet to finalise the Terms of Reference (ToR) or appoint its estimates that the minimum salary could rise from ₹18,000 to about ₹30,000, reflecting a fitment factor of around 1.8. This would lead to a real increase of nearly 13% in pay for central government employees affected by the revision. A total of around 3.3 million central employees, mostly from Grade C category, are likely to benefit the most. Grade C workers make up nearly 90% of the central government timeline for the 8th CPC is expected to follow the pattern of previous commissions. The 6th and 7th CPCs took around 1.5 years to complete their reports. After that, the government took another 3 to 9 months to implement the recommendations post Cabinet approval. Kotak said, "The 8th CPC is unlikely to be implemented before late 2026 or early 2027."The estimated financial burden of the new pay commission could range between ₹2.4 lakh crore and ₹3.2 lakh crore, or about 0.6–0.8% of India's GDP. While this could add pressure to the fiscal budget, past pay revisions have shown temporary positive effects on the noted that the pay hike may give a brief push to consumption and savings. 'We expect the 8th CPC to provide a temporary boost to consumption and savings,' the firm said. The impact is expected to be visible in sectors like automobiles and consumer staples. However, such gains have typically been firm also said that the revised pay structure may encourage more savings in both physical and financial assets such as equities and bank deposits. Kotak estimates that the pay revision could lead to incremental savings of ₹1–1.5 lakh last major revision, the 7th CPC, combined with the One Rank One Pension scheme, added about two percentage points to India's GDP growth in FY17. While similar growth is not guaranteed this time, Kotak believes the overall economic impact will still be significant, particularly in the short government has not shared further updates on the 8th CPC beyond its announcement in January 2025. Until the ToR and commission members are finalised, the process remains in its early per a report last week, the Ministry of Finance has started holding early consultations with major stakeholders to set up the 8th Central Pay Commission. These talks include departments such as Defence, Home Affairs, and Personnel and Training, along with state governments. These discussions are intended to collect feedback ahead of the official notification of the a written reply in Parliament, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said, 'Inputs have been sought from major stakeholders, including Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Personnel & Training and from states.'Chaudhary also told the Lok Sabha that the appointment of the chairperson and other commission members will take place once the 8th CPC is formally constituted. No appointments have been made so upcoming CPC may propose a fitment factor of 1.8 for salary revision. This would be lower than the 2.57 factor adopted in the 7th Pay Commission. While a fitment factor of 1.8 implies an 80% increase in the basic pay structure, the real impact on net salary would be reduced because the existing dearness allowance (DA)—currently around 55%—would reset to zero under the new the fitment factor of 1.8 is accepted, the minimum basic salary may increase from ₹18,000 to around ₹32,000. But after adjusting for current allowances, the actual increment would amount to an estimated 13%. For example, the present ₹18,000 base salary includes a DA component of about ₹9,900. Similarly, a base salary of ₹50,000 may be revised to ₹90,000, but since DA of around ₹27,500 is already included, the effective rise would be twice-yearly revision of dearness allowance is expected to continue under the 8th CPC. The government approved most of the proposals with effect from January 1, 2016. The structure and impact of the 8th CPC are likely to be shaped by current economic conditions and inflation, but will follow broadly the same process, beginning with the collection of inputs from relevant departments and states.

Bhel looks to tap India's payments powerhouse to charge up govt's EV drive
New Delhi: State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd will seek the expertise of UPI-maker National Payments Corporation of India to develop a digital app with an integrated payments mechanism for a nationwide network of electric vehicle charging stations, three officials said. Bhel is likely to be nominated to lead the tendering process for 72,300 EV public charging stations under the ₹10,900-crore PM E-Drive scheme, Mint reported on 16 June. The Centre's marquee scheme to incentivize green mobility has allocated ₹2,000 crore to subsidize electric vehicle charging stations, but the PM E-Drive scheme has only about eight months left in its runtime. Bhel's latest efforts reflect its diversification from being a manufacturer of thermal power equipment to aggregating demand for EV charging infrastructure across the country. 'Bhel is going to reach out to NPCI for developing the app. This is the first time Bhel is making an app for EV charging," said one of the officials. 'Bhel is primarily a thermal power equipment manufacturer, (and) developing an app, especially for financial transactions, is not its expertise. That is why it was proposed that Bhel collaborate with NPCI on this app," said another official. Payments will be a crucial part of Bhel's app, especially as consumers have complained about incomplete payments, network and software issues, and inactivity of EV charging management systems, the second official said, referring to publicly available networks run by private companies. 'Many consumers also complained about their money being stuck in these charging systems," the official said. 'India has over 25,000 public EV charging stations managed by more than 40 charging point operators, often requiring users to navigate multiple apps to locate, access, and pay for charging," said Akshay Parihar, associate director (energy transition), at Deloitte. 'The proposed Unified Charging Platform, like UPI, will allow EV users to seamlessly locate, book, and pay across any CPO through a single, integrated app. This initiative is expected to improve accessibility, boost charger utilization, and enable EV charger interoperability across India's growing EV ecosystem," he added. Bhel and NPCI did not reply to Mint's queries emailed last week. India's buzzing EV market While most electric vehicle users charge their vehicles at home, India had 26,367 public EV charging stations at the end of March, according to a Lok Sabha disclosure by the heavy industries ministry on 4 April. New electric vehicle sales rose to about 1.9 million in FY25 from 1.6 million in the year before, according to data from Vahan, the central government's motor vehicle registry. S&P Global said in its 'India's EV Market: Trends and Future Prospects' report published in March that it expects total electric passenger vehicle production in India to surge to about 1.33 million units by 2030, accounting for about 20% of the country's total passenger vehicle production. NPCI, which oversees retail payments and settlement systems in India, has developed several products including UPI for realtime bank transfers, the RuPay credit card network, and FASTag for digital toll collections. Bhel's proposed unified payment mechanism for public EV charging infrastructure would also help capture data for estimating the range of batteries in different vehicles, said the third official mentioned above. 'The payment cycle would help in gathering data regarding the requirement of charging for different kinds of vehicles and the range of their batteries. This data would give a sense of required charging efficiency, which would be key for future innovation in chargers and batteries," this official said. All three officials spoke on condition of anonymity as Bhel's plan to approach NPCI is still at an early stage. Multiple initiatives and starting troubles The PM E-Drive scheme is the Union government's second programme to incentivise the rollout of a nationwide EV charging infrastructure—essential for encouraging more customers to buy electric vehicles. In the earlier EV incentive scheme—Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric (and Hybrid) vehicles scheme (FAME)—the government allocated about ₹912 crore for installing EV charging stations across the country. It, however, disbursed only about ₹633 crore under the second edition of the FAME scheme, which ended in March last year. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd were tasked with setting up EV chargers across their fuel stations. According to a parliamentary disclosure in February, these oil marketing companies installed about 4,500 public EV charging stations under the FAME 2 scheme, but only 251 of those were 'energized", or made operational. 'In addition to this, OMCs have set up 20,035 EVCS at their retail outlets from their own funds," the government informed Parliament.
