Armand Duplantis soars to another world title as Jakob Ingebrigtsen claims 1500m gold

Independent22-03-2025
Sweden's Armand Duplantis secured a third consecutive title at the World Indoor Athletics Championships with a superb gold medal-winning effort of 6.15m.
Duplantis was the overwhelming favourite after soaring to 6.27m and shattering the world record for an 11th time in Clermont-Ferrand last month, and at Nanjing's Cube the 25-year-old Duplantis completed a century of jumps over six metres.
The twice Olympic champion comfortably scaled 6.05m for the 100th vault over 6.00m and despite a rare blip in his first attempt at 6.10m, he joined Sergey Bubka and Renaud Lavillenie as a triple world indoors champion.
Greece's Emmanouil Karalis pushed Duplantis hard but had to be content with silver after clearing 6.05m and American Sam Kendricks took bronze with 5.90m.
French pole vaulter Marie-Julie Bonnin cleared 4.75 metres to dethrone Britain's Molly Caudery and win gold in the women's fina l during the day session. She also equalled compatriot Ninon Guillon-Romarin's French national record.
Her attempts to clear 4.80m were not successful but the 23-year-old was all smiles as she celebrated with Slovenia's Tina Sutej, who claimed the silver with 4.70m, and Switzerland's Angelica Moser who took bronze.
"I cannot believe it. It's like a dream. I feel like we were there for a medal, but not the gold," Bonnin said.
Caudery, the champion in Glasgow last year, was fourth.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen found himself boxed in midway through the men's 3,000m final but the Norwegian expertly extricated himself with bursts of speed to finish in 7:46.09 and stay in the hunt for a 1,500m and 3,000m double.
That feat has been achieved only once at the indoor worlds, by Ethiopian great Haile Gebrselassie in 1999, but the 24-year-old Ingebrigtsen will fancy his chances over the shorter distance on Sunday.
"It was a little bit of a fight, but I was confident that I can make a move in the last 100m and win," Ingebrigtsen said.
"I don't enjoy the 1500m warm-up, but the racing is fun and that's what I'm going to do tomorrow, have a lot of fun."
Ethiopia's Berihu Aregawi was second with 7:46.25 while Australia's Ky Robinson finished third in 7:47.09.
Freweyni Hailu of Ethiopia claimed gold in the women's 3,000m final with a time of 8:37.21, finishing ahead of American Shelby Houlihan (8:38.26) and Australia's Jessica Hull (8:38.28).
"I was sick at home before coming to Nanjing, so I stayed at the back to conserve myself before making my push," Hailu said.

Celestial Orbit swerves Ascot and will await more rain

Last year's Star Stakes scorer, who chased home Zanzoun in the Nell Gwyn on her seasonal return before running in the French 1000 Guineas, held an entry for the Longines Valiant Stakes on Saturday but will now be held back for Goodwood or Haydock in the coming weeks having not been declared. Sangster said: 'I was thinking the ground was going to be a bit fast for her and she's a filly who wants a bit of ease in the ground. Even though we've had a lot of rain around the last week, it's still looking like it might be a bit quick for her at Ascot. 'She's a filly who has been on the back-burner a bit since France, where the ground was too fast for her after her good run before that in the Nell Gwyn. We're just biding our time and hoping she can have a productive autumn. 'I've got a few races in mind depending on when the rain comes, maybe the Oak Tree at Goodwood (July 30) or the Dick Hern over a mile at Haydock (August 9) could be nice options. Alternatively if the rain doesn't come there's no rush and there's plenty of nice races down the line. 'Her first run back will be a case of just getting her back and started really, but she's not a filly we would want to risk on fast ground.' Haydock's Listed Dick Hern Stakes could also be on the cards for Celestial Orbit's stablemate and fellow Star Stakes scorer Shuwari, who has been absent since running in Kempton's Snowdrop Stakes earlier in the season. 'She's had a couple of small setbacks after Kempton but nothing more than that and she's a filly that also wants a bit of ease in the ground, so we've taken plenty of time with her,' added Sangster. 'I provisionally marked the Dick Hern for her at Haydock if there is some ease in the ground. She's training away nicely and hopefully can have a good second half of the season, it will be nice to get her back to the track anyway.'

Jose Mourinho brutally dismisses Chelsea's Club World Cup win with pre-season comparison

Chelsea claimed FIFA's Club World Cup in the United States of America but Jose Mourinho has played down their success, likening it to a pre-season tour despite the Blues' excitement Jose Mourinho has claimed the Club World Cup was "only important for Chelsea" and that watching the tournament reminded him of "every time I went to the United States for pre-season". ‌ The Blues became the first side to win the newly expanded FIFA tournament, which included a host of the world's top sides. Chelsea produced an upset in the final to see off PSG 3-0 despite the French side being heavy favourites after hammering Real Madrid in the semi-finals. En route to the final, Chelsea beat Benfica, Palmeiras and Fluminense. ‌ Enzo Maresca hailed his side's effort and ramped up the importance of the Club World Cup as he said: 'I think it will become as important as the Champions League and we value it as much as winning the Champions League.' ‌ That was despite some of the sport's major teams, Barcelona and Liverpool among them, not being given a chance to participate. And Mourinho, now in charge of Fenerbahce, hinted that the tournament was a little more than a glorified pre-season trip. The Special One told Canal 11: "This Club World Cup also highlighted a kid who also had a great season at Chelsea, Cole Palmer. But this run to the semi-finals reminded me every time I went to the United States for pre-season with Real Madrid and Inter, it reminded me a little of those games we played there. "So, I think this Club World Cup title is only important for Chelsea, as they'll sell a lot of jerseys with the logo on there. So, I think PSG was the big winner this season, not because of what they did domestically, because they always win domestically, but winning the Champions League and the way they did, especially with the idea of losing their best player." The ex-Blues boss made his thoughts clear as he added: "I think this PSG team is the best team of the season." The Parisians claimed the treble under Luis Enrique and secured the biggest winning margin in Champions League final history. The Club World Cup itself divided opinion. Jurgen Klopp was scathing in his assessment whilst plenty of games were not played in front of capacity crowds. It also included teams like Auckland City, who included a number of part-time players. Chelsea star Levi Colwill though echoed the thoughts of his manager as he claimed: "This is the biggest trophy I've ever won. I think the Club World Cup will be bigger than the Champions League and we were the first team to win it." The Blues will return to the Champions League this term having finished fourth.

Rangers approach Crystal Palace over loan deal for winger

Rangers have made an approach to Crystal Palace in an attempt to sign winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi on loan until the end of the season. No agreement has been reached between the clubs yet, but Rangers are hopeful of making him the latest addition to Russell Martin's squad. Rak-Sakyi has been linked with several clubs this summer, with Palace reportedly considering his long-term future. The 22-year-old moved to Palace six years ago and has played ten games for the first team. He was loaned to Sheffield United last season and played 34 games in the Championship, scoring seven times. That helped catch the eye of Rangers, who are continuing a huge summer rebuild following the American takeover at Ibrox. Speaking after the team's 1-0 win over Panathinaikos in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier, Martin talked about having more new recruits to help the team before the transfer window closes. Rangers would like Rak-Sakyi to be one of those signings but even if a deal is struck quickly he would not be able to play in next week's second leg in Athens.
