Opposition rejects PPP's 'visionless' budget for city
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation City Council Opposition Leader Saifuddin Advocate has rejected the local government budget presented by the Pakistan People Party regime, dubbing it a "vision less" budget.
The opposition leader expressed these views while sharing the JI's vision 2025-30 at his chamber during the pre-budget briefing to the media on Tuesday.
He said that not even a single development scheme was presented in the city council for the past two years. This year 116 development schemes are being presented in the Annual Development Plan but unfortunately all of them were supposed to be carried out in the UCs run by either the PPP or it's partner the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
He added that the JI runs nine towns and 87 union councils but the PPP's mayor showed extreme biasness when it comes to development schemes. He suggested that at least Rs30 million should be allocated for development in each union council of the mega city.
On the occasion, he floated an idea to take all stakeholders of the mega city onboard for the Karachi Development Plan-- a comprehensive strategy to develop the mega city.

Low-cost housing projects hit dead end
Even after the passage of 12 years, residential projects introduced by the Sindh government for providing decent housing to the low-income segments of Karachi remain hanging in uncertainty. Amidst complex bureaucratic hurdles and shifting priorities of the government, many deserving families can imagine comfortable living in their dreams only. In the financial year 2008-09, a low-cost housing project was initiated under the management of the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Housing Cell. As part of this project, low-cost houses were to be constructed in different districts of the province. According to officials of the housing cell, 18,700 low-cost houses have been constructed in three phases, Under this scheme, 6,000 houses were to be constructed in Karachi, but not a single house has been built there to date. After this, during the same tenure of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), the Sindh government had announced another project under which 50,000 poor families of the province, including Karachi, were to be given free plots totaling 120 square yards in area size. However, so far, only 27,000 plots have been given to the deserving families across Sindh. The project was also supposed to accommodate families of PPP workers martyred during the bomb blast in October 2007. The Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Town was built at the Hawks Bay area of Karachi, where 18,000 plots of 120 square yards were given to impoverished families including the relatives of the martyred PPP workers and local journalists. Due to lack of necessary development and other problems, most of the allottees could not build their houses and were forced to sell their plots at cheap prices due to poverty. Many others however, remained deprived of their promised land, due to the outdated system of government offices. A PPP worker from Lyari, on the condition of anonymity, revealed that when the project had started, they had made several rounds of the respective offices, but each time they were told that the paperwork had not yet started. Similarly, another PPP worker from Lyari, shared that even though he was given a plot under the scheme, he did not have money to construct a house. "I could not afford to build a house therefore, I sold my plot for Rs100,000 a few years ago," said the allottee. When contacted by the Express Tribune, Irfan Abro, in-charge of the project, confirmed that very few people had constructed houses in the Shaheed Benazir Town Karachi. "Hence, we have informed all plot holders through an advertisement this month that they should submit the layout plan of their plots as soon as possible. Allotments will be cancelled for those who do not submit their layout plans and fail to start construction work," said Abro. Anis Qadir Mangi, Director of the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Housing Cell, told The Express Tribune that 6,000 houses were to be constructed in Karachi under the project. "I have submitted a proposal to the Sindh Finance Department in this regard," said Mangi.

JI riles provincial, federal govts for ignoring Karachi
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar stated that the federal, provincial and local government budget made it very clear that Karachi and Karachiites were the priority of none among the ruling parties. The JI leader expressed these views while addressing a post budget press briefing held at Idara Noor-e-Haq, the JI Karachi headquarters, on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) regime allocated just Rs37.44 billion for Karachi out of its budget of Rs3,451 billion -- a mere 1.1 per cent of the total budget. He demanded that at least Rs500 billion be allocated for development in Karachi. Similarly, he said, each town should be granted Rs2 billion and each union council should be granted Rs20 million. Talking about the budget by nine towns in Karachi run by the JI, he dubbed it health, education and people friendly budget. Detailing the budget in the nine towns, he said that Rs870 million were allocated for the education sector as compared to Rs520 million in the last fiscal year. He said that an amount of over Rs310.5 million was allocated for the health sector as compared to Rs160 million in the previous year.

Israeli aggression: Pakistan expresses solidarity with Iran: PM
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said that Pakistan expressed full solidarity with the Iranian government and people at all levels during the recent Israeli aggression on Iran. Speaking to members of the Senate and National Assembly after the approval of Budget 2025-26, he said that Iranian leaders, notably President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, maintained continuous contact with him throughout the crisis. 'The resolution of the Israel-Iran conflict will unlock a new era of peace and prosperity across the region,' he said, underlining Pakistan's commitment to regional stability. Shifting focus to domestic affairs, Sharif hailed the tireless efforts of his economic team for crafting a 'people-friendly' budget designed to meet the aspirations of all Pakistanis. He expressed deep gratitude to allied political parties, whose crucial consultations paved the way for the budget's smooth approval. 'This exemplary unity among our coalition partners is the backbone of our economic revival,' he said, urging collective hard work for the nation's development. Turning to security and foreign policy, Sharif proudly recounted Pakistan's recent victory in countering India's 'unjustified aggression.' He credited the Armed Forces, political leadership, civil society, and media for collectively foiling hostile designs and elevating Pakistan's prestige on the global stage. Under the leadership of PPP Chairman Bilawal, Pakistan's diplomatic delegation exposed India's malign intentions and won international acclaim. The delegation's efforts were warmly lauded by overseas Pakistanis, who praised both the government and the military for their decisive diplomatic and military triumphs, he added. The parliamentarians who called on the Prime Minister include MNAs Khail Das Kohistani, Dr Darshan, Nelson Azeem from PML-N, and Ramesh Lal and Naveed Amir from PPP. They congratulated the Prime Minister on the budget's approval and discussed pressing constituency issues.
