Hawkers oppose eviction drive at Shillong's Police Bazar, seek fair relocation plan

Shillong: Street vendors at Khyndailad in Shillong's Police Bazar area on Monday voiced strong opposition to the Shillong Municipal Board's eviction drive, demanding a mutually agreeable solution before any relocation takes place.
The Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association has opposed the forceful eviction of hawkers without a consensus on relocation plans.
Civic body staff, accompanied by officials from the East Khasi Hills district administration and police personnel, launched an eviction drive targeting street hawkers without certificates of vending. Goods belonging to the vendors occupying public spaces were seized and loaded into trucks, even as some hawkers attempted to retrieve them.
Over the past week, the civic body had issued public announcements asking unauthorised vendors to vacate the area, which has officially been declared a no-vending zone.
Hawkers with valid certificates have been directed to shift to designated vending spaces, including the govt-owned MUDA commercial complex in Police Bazar, by July 22.
Meanwhile, the civic body has also directed shop owners and commercial establishments at Khyndailad not to display goods outside their premises.

A June 29 notification issued by the civic body chief executive officer PK Boro warned that non-compliance would result in the removal of such goods by the municipal board and could lead to suspension or revocation of business licences.
"It was found that many shops and commercial establishments are displaying goods outside their premises. This is a blatant encroachment on public paths and roads, causing inconvenience to the public and violating conditions of the Business License under Shillong Municipal By-Law 136 framed under the Meghalaya Municipal Act, 1973 (as amended)," the notice stated.

State names special courts in Panaji, Margao to deal with land grab cases
Panaji: State govt on Tuesday designated two courts, one in each district, as special courts to ensure proper prosecution and speedy trials in land grab cases. The special investigation team (SIT) probing these cases registered over 44 FIRs and arrested 56 persons. The notification issued by Amir Parab, undersecretary, law, said that govt designed the courts of district judge-1 and additional sessions judge, Panaji and Margao, as special courts to deal with land grabbing cases, both existing and future registrations, until new legislation is enacted. He said the notification was issued on the recommendation by justice V K Jadhav, who heads the commission of inquiry, and with the concurrence of the high court. TOI has earlier reported that the high court granted approval to state govt's proposal to designate two special courts to ensure proper prosecution and speedy trials in land grab cases. The chief justice had directed the designation of these two courts to deal with land grab cases. Eight killed in TN firecracker making unit blast
VIRUDHUNAGAR: Eight workers were killed and five others injured in an explosion at a fireworks unit at Chinnakamanpatti village in Virudhunagar district on Tuesday. The incident happened at Gokulesh Fireworks near Sattur, a unit licensed by Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation. Around 8.20am, workers were handling chemicals required for the manufacture of aerial crackers in the chemical mixing room when the blast occurred, triggered by friction, police said. Eight workers, Mahalingam, 55, Ramamoorthy, 45, Ramajeyam, 27, Lakshmi, 22, Vairamani, 32, Chellapandi, Nagapandi, and Punniamoorthy, died on the spot. Five others sustained injuries and were admitted to Sivakasi govt hospital. Notices to 266 for business operations at homes, building code violations in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: For the third consecutive week, the district town planner (enforcement) team carried out the 'office on the spot' drive in Sushant Lok phases 2 and 3. Around 266 notices were pasted on homes violating building norms, zoning laws, and OC rules. Of these, 183 were in phase 3 and 83 in Phase 2. In total, over 650 notices have been issued in the past three weeks.
