, recently flagged off the three iconic Durand Cup trophies from the Rashtrapati Bhawan Cultural Centre (RBCC), formally marking the commencement of the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup – Asia's oldest and India's most prestigious football tournament.This is the second consecutive year the President has performed this symbolic gesture, reaffirming the Cup's enduring significance as a unique confluence of sport, service and nationhood.
The ceremony also continues a proud post-independence tradition of the Supreme Commander's direct association with the Durand Cup.
The ceremony at the RBCC saw the presence of General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh, Chief of the Air Staff and Lt General RC Tiwari, GOC-in-C Eastern Command and Patron, Durand Cup Organizing Committee (DCOC).
Also gracing the occasion was Arjuna Award recipient and renowned Indian footballer Sandesh Jhingan.
Speaking at the occasion, President Murmu acknowledged the Durand Cup as a living symbol of India's footballing heritage and Armed Forces' sporting commitment, and said, 'Football has a special place in the hearts of millions. It is not just a sport; it is a passion. The game of football is all about strategy, endurance and working together towards a common goal.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar hailed Jasprit Bumrah's performance across both the innings during the third Test against England at Lord's, saying that "showing his greatness in different ways" has become a part of the bowler's legacy. India trail 1-2 in the series. India lost the match despite dominating England for large parts of the game, with one of the standout performers being Bumrah. He took seven wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings. Bumrah changed the game in India's favour in the first innings, reducing England to 271/7 from 251/4, getting wickets of skipper Ben Stokes, centurion Joe Root and all-rounder Chris Woakes quickly. During the second innings, Bumrah struggled to get through England's top-order despite his pace, bounce and accuracy. Nonetheless he kept going and after all-rounder Washington Sundar ran through the middle-order. Bumrah got wickets of lower-order batters Brydon Carse and Woakes. Speaking on 'Follow the Blues', JioStar expert Manjrekar analysed Bumrah's performance. "In the first innings, Bumrah showed just how great a bowler he is. This was the kind of pitch where he could not really display his full range, so he bowled patiently and waited for opportunities. And when the moment came -- in the latter half of the innings -- he was ready. He picked up five wickets in the first innings on a surface that did not offer much assistance." "Then, when Washington Sundar took four key wickets (in second innings) and India needed to wrap up England quickly, Bumrah stepped in again and delivered. That yorker to dismiss Brydon Carse is still fresh in the mind. Showing his greatness in different ways -- that has become Bumrah's legacy," he added. Manjrekar said that India lost the match because of some "little errors", with one of them being the Rishabh Pant's unfortunate run-out for 74, ending the 141-run partnership with KL Rahul on day three that could have no doubt gone further and given India a valuable first innings lead if it was not for a "fielding masterclass" by Stokes, who initiated the run-out. "When I look at the turning points and the small mistakes made, I feel India lost this Test match because of those little errors. There were no major blunders -- even Rishabh Pant's run-out was just one of those minor mistakes. But this is where the brilliance of Ben Stokes comes in. He mentioned in his interview that Pant stuttered slightly, and he sensed an opportunity for a run-out. And Stokes, right in the middle of a bowling spell, pulled off a fielding masterclass. That's the mark of a champion cricketer. Pant, perhaps, was trying to give KL Rahul a chance to get back on strike and complete his century. But like I have said, the team did not make any massive errors -- it was the accumulation of small ones that made the difference in the end," he added. England won the toss and opted to bat first. England was reduced to 44/2, but a 109-run stand between Ollie Pope (44 in 104 balls, with four boundaries) and Joe Root (104 in 199 balls, with 10 fours) and a counter-attacking 84 run stand for the eighth wicket stand between Brydon Carse (56 in 83 balls, with six fours and a six) and Jamie Smith (51 in 56 balls, with six fours) took England to 387. Jasprit Bumrah (5/74) was the highlight for India with the ball. In the second innings, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early, but a 61-run stand between Karun Nair (26 in 46 balls, with five fours) and KL Rahul and a 141-run stand between KL (100 in 177 balls, with 13 fours) and Rishabh Pant (74 in 112 balls, with eight fours and two sixes) took India close to England's score.A brilliant half-century from Ravindra Jadeja (72 in 131 balls, with eight fours and a six) and lower-order contributions from Nitish Kumar Reddy (30) and Washington Sundar (23) took India to 387, with nothing separating the sides. Chris Woakes (3/84) was the top bowler for England in this innings. In England's second innings, India continuously kept England under pressure, except for a 67-run fifth wicket stand between Root (40 in 96 balls, with a four) and Stokes (33 in 96 balls, with three fours). Vaishali Rameshbabu was teetering on the brink of elimination. Twice in two games. Having battled out draws in both of her classical games in the FIDE World Cup Round 3 clash against USA's Carissa Yip — an International Master, but among the top up and coming stars in the sport — Vaishali salvaged two draws from losing positions in two rapid games of the tiebreak. The Netflix crew that has followed Yip to the Georgian city of Batumi were getting some decent drama on camera. Then, out of nowhere, Vaishali sent Yip home with two wins in two games. 'In both the games with 15+10 time controls, I was completely lost. Especially in the first one where I was two or three pawns down. But I just kept playing,' Vaishali told FIDE's YouTube channel in an interview after that heady victory over Yip. The ongoing FIDE Women's World Cup in Batumi has seen an incredible show of strength from the Indian contingent, four of whom are currently still contending in the pre-quarterfinals. The only other country that has as many competitors as India in the last-16 is China, which has been a bonafide powerhouse when it comes to women's chess, with six women from the country ascending to the women's world champion's throne in the past. Joining Vaishali in the last-16 are the veterans Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli while IM Divya Deshmukh is a flagbearer of the young brigade. Another young IM, Vantika Agrawal, ran into the formidable Kateryna Lagno and held the Russian star to a tied score after five games, before her resistance finally crumbled in the sixth battle. Lagno, a former World Rapid and Blitz champion, was not the only top star made to huff and puff by the 23-year-old Indian, who is ranked no 63 in the world. In the previous round, Vantika sent home a former women's world champion, Anna Ushenina, after eight battles across varied time controls. For Vantika, the current FIDE World Cup could help in the same way the last World Cup experience helped Divya. The Nagpur girl admitted that playing at the previous World Cup was very important for her as it had given her a glimpse of what top-level chess looks like. 'It's very stressful, but I wouldn't be anywhere else,' said Divya with a grin. Divya will be one half of an exciting India vs China battle at Batumi when she takes on world no 6 Zhu Jiner. For the 19-year-old — who had to negotiate hard with her mind to play for a draw and not go on the offensive to chase a win in a previous game — this will be a mettle detector. It'll also be a battle of the sport's next gen. For the last few years, the world has experienced tremors of an Indian earthquake in the sport of chess with the golden generation of Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi shaking up the world order. This ongoing World Cup at Batumi could just be a showcase for the Indian women to demonstrate their heft on the board as well. They did give a glimpse of it at last year's Chess Olympiad in Budapest where not only did the Indian women's team won a gold but there were two individual gold medals as well for Divya and Vantika. But in the aftermath of that heady Budapest night, the men started to grab headlines, with Gukesh becoming world champion, Arjun crossing 2800 rating threshold and then Pragg turning into a serial winner this year. Women's chess is currently dominated by China. Since 2017, the world has had a Chinese woman being the women's world champion. The FIDE rankings too reflect this with Hou Yifan, world champion Ju Wenjun and Lei Tingjie sitting in the top 3 rankings spots. With Zhu Jiner at No 6 and Tan Zhongyi the world no 8, five of the top 8 women in the world are currently Chinese. In contrast, there's just one Indian — Humpy — in the top 10. But just outside the top 10, are three Indians — Harika, Vaishali and Divya — readying for an assault on the top 10 club. The World Cup offers the top three finishers a spot at next year's Women's Candidates tournament, which is the final step towards challenging the reigning women's world champion.
