A long-standing astronomical enigma has finally been unravelled. Scientists now believe that Fast X-ray Transients (FXTs), brief, intense X-ray flashes, are the result of failed gamma-ray bursts, marking the final moments of massive dying stars. This revelation reshapes our understanding of how stars meet their end.
Five Decades Of Unanswered Questions
Since the 1970s, astronomers have observed puzzling bursts of X-rays, lasting from mere seconds to several hours, without knowing their cause. These phenomena, dubbed FXTs, have mystified scientists for nearly 50 years.
Now, Jillian Rastinejad and her team at Northwestern University in Illinois, USA, have identified their source: the collapsed core of a massive star struggling, and failing, to produce a gamma-ray burst (GRB).
How Dying Stars Generate FXTs
When a giant star, around 15 to 30 times the mass of the Sun, reaches the end of its life, it collapses inward, creating jets that blast outward at incredible speeds. If these jets escape the star's outer layers, a gamma-ray burst occurs.
However, when the jets fail to break through, they become trapped, generating a shock that emits X-rays, what we observe as an FXT.
The Einstein Probe's Breakthrough
On January 8, 2025, NASA's Einstein Probe telescope detected a powerful X-ray flash, designated EP 250108a. Further analysis linked it to a rare supernova, SN 2025kg, nicknamed 'The Kangaroo'. This particular supernova belongs to the fast-moving Type Ic-BL category, with its material expanding at roughly 19,000 kilometres per second.
In this case, the star's jets could not pierce its outer layers and were instead trapped inside, releasing their energy in the form of an FXT. Although not as dramatic as a gamma-ray burst, the event was still strikingly powerful.
Astrophysicist Rob Ailes-Ferris observed that while the FXT resembled those linked to gamma-ray bursts, the difference lay in the jets' failure to emerge. Previously, it was assumed that gamma-ray bursts were a frequent feature of stellar collapse. However, this discovery reveals that 'trapped jets', and therefore FXTs, occur more often than their successful counterparts.
Unlocking The Secrets Of Stellar Death
Scientists are now focused on understanding what causes jets to fail. Are internal forces, such as magnetic fields or stellar composition, to blame? Or do external factors, like surrounding material, play a role? Researchers hope that solving these questions will also offer insight into other cosmic mysteries.
As Ailes-Ferris from the University of Leicester in England explained, 'This discovery not only enhances our understanding of FXTs, but also deepens our knowledge of how stars die and the remnants they leave behind."
The full study has been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, with further technical details available in two accompanying papers on arXiv.org.

'We're conducting more research studies than any private ISS mission before. It's not just about science—it's about international collaboration,' Whitson, the Ax-4 commander and a veteran astronaut, had said earlier. India's contribution includes a diverse portfolio of experiments in fields like biotechnology, agriculture, and human physiology, designed by institutions across Bengaluru, Dharwad, Thiruvananthapuram, and New Delhi. Among the Indian studies, one from IISc explored how humans interact with electronic screens in microgravity and investigated the resilience of tardigrades- microscopic organisms known for their survival capabilities. An experiment by InStem, Bengaluru, examined the effect of metabolic supplements on muscle regeneration in space, while testing the sprouting of salad seeds, critical for space-based nutrition, was designed by University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), with NIPGR, designed the study to examine the behaviour of edible microalgae and cyanobacteria in space conditions. And Isro's IIST, alongside Kerala Agricultural University, sent experiments to investigate how microgravity influences the growth of food crops.

According to an internal report shared by Politico , 2,145 senior staff members in important roles including 875 top-level GS-15 workers are planning to leave. In total, 2,694 NASA employees have chosen to take early retirement, accept buyout offers, or delay their resignations. These people hold important technical and leadership positions, and their exit could have a big impact on NASA's work. This is all part of a larger effort to reduce the size of the workforce. But with so many skilled people leaving at once, it's raising concerns about how NASA will manage its future projects. Is NASA facing a major exodus? NASA is seeing a huge wave of resignations, with 1,818 employees from its main missions in science and human spaceflight planning to leave. Many others from important support roles like IT and finance are also going. Experts are worried this means NASA is losing a big part of its technical and leadership strength. Casey Dreier, a space policy expert from The Planetary Society, warned that the agency is losing the people who keep its core work running, and raised serious questions about whether this is the right move. Casey Dreier from The Planetary Society said: 'You're losing the managerial and core technical expertise of the agency. What's the strategy, and what do we hope to achieve here?' One former NASA staff member said they chose to resign partly because they were worried about the future. They mentioned fear over major budget cuts and the fact that NASA still doesn't have a Senate-confirmed administrator, saying, 'Things just sound like it's going to get worse.' So far, only half of the planned 5,000 job cuts have been reached through early retirements and voluntary exits. Shubhanshu Shukla The Axiom-4 crew's departure aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft 'Grace' will conclude a stay that stretched beyond the originally planned two weeks. Weather conditions off the California coast will determine the final departure time, Axiom Space said on Friday. 'The Axiom Mission 4 crew is set to undock from the International Space Station no earlier than Monday, July 14, at 7:05 AM ET (4:35pm IST), pending favourable weather conditions,' the US-based company stated. Commander Peggy Whitson, pilot Shukla, and mission specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary have been conducting final experiments during their last days in orbit. The crew has completed 60 experiments representing 31 countries since docking on June 26. NASA will provide live coverage beginning with hatch closing around 2pm IST on July 14, followed by undocking coverage starting at 4:15pm IST. The collaboration between NASA and ISRO has produced five joint science investigations and two in-orbit demonstrations, strengthening ties between the space agencies. The mission serves as a crucial stepping stone for India's independent Gaganyaan programme and plans for the Bharatiya Antariksh Station.
