Kacey Musgraves reflects on controversy surrounding her breakthrough song ‘Follow Your Arrow' 12 years later.

When Kacey Musgraves released 'Follow Your Arrow' in 2013, she didn't expect it to emerge as one of country's most controversial singles. But it did.
The third single from her debut, Grammy-winning studio album, Same Trailer Different Park, 'Follow Your Arrow' was quick to generate discourse within the country music community when it was released in October 2013. Musgraves, who was 25 years old when the song came out, received backlash for the song's references of same-sex love and recreational marijuana use. The Golden Hour singer-songwriter co-wrote the track with Brandy Clark and record producer Shane McAnally.
With lyrics like, 'Kiss lots of boys/Or kiss lots of girls, if that's something you're into' and 'Roll up a joint, or don't/Just follow your arrow where it points, yeah,' the track made it onto Billboard's list of most controversial country songs of all time. While performing the song during the 2013 Country Music Awards, the lyric 'roll up a joint' was also censored and deemed inappropriate for primetime television.
'Oh my gosh, it was so controversial,' Musgraves told the Hollywood Reporter of the song in an interview for their May 2025 issue. 'It ended up tanking — it was banned by country radio. But I would never trade that for the love and the people it brought to my world. I'm not going to present a watered-down version of myself to be accepted.'
Musgraves told the Hollywood Reporter that she didn't release the song, which went on to win Song of the Year at the 2014 CMA Awards, with the intention of being seen as a rule-breaker in country music.
'I'm just doing my job as a songwriter,' she said. 'When you look at country music as a genre and where it started, it is really textured, beautiful layers of real stories, heartbreak, things that aren't always easy to talk about. It's stories for the everyday person. And that's what always draws me back to country music: It's there for you, no matter what you're going through.'
For fans of Musgraves, this sentiment couldn't be more true. On TikTok, fans have shared what the song means to them — and how it's helped them embrace themselves.
Considered 'the queer fan's country music queen' by BuzzFeed, and the 'ultimate ally' by Them, Musgraves was the first country music artist to perform at the GLAAD Media Awards, which honors artists who use their platforms to spotlight the LGBTQ community. She also has a history of championing queer artists: She collaborated with Troye Sivan on the rerelease of his track 'Easy,' and previously toured with King Princess and electropop trio MUNA.
The country music darling, who hails from Golden, Texas, told NPR in 2024 that while she did have a 'wonderful childhood,' she is from a 'very conservative' part of East Texas. Musgraves attributes her shift in perspective to an ex-boyfriend, whom she met after moving to Nashville.
'He was from a completely different upbringing than me, a liberal family in upstate New York. He had a ton of gay friends and he just sat me down one day and we had a real hard and honest conversation about it,' Musgraves said. 'He just helped me completely open up my eyes and see and I was just like, 'Damn, I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to get out of where I came from, and have my eyes and my heart open to this really wonderful community, and they've made me way more well-rounded.'
Twelve years later, Musgraves still proudly plays 'Follow Your Arrow' at her shows. The country star played the song at numerous stops along her Deeper Well Tour in 2024.
'It was met with a lot of 'hell no's.' It was met with a lot of opposition,' Musgraves told a crowd in 2024, before launching into the song. 'They said, 'You're gonna go down in flames if you do this.' And I was like, 'Well, at least I'll be going down in flames for something I really believe in. At least it was my true self.''

Lady Gaga's Vintage-Sounding Duet Beats Her Oscar-Winning Smash

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars's 'Die With a Smile' celebrates 46 weeks on the Hot 100, passing 'Shallow' ... More to become her second-longest-charting hit. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - DECEMBER 12: Lady Gaga attends Netflix's "Maestro" Los Angeles Photo Call at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on December 12, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic) With each passing week that 'Die With a Smile' finds space on the Hot 100, the song continues to climb higher on the list of Lady Gaga's longest-running successes on Billboard's most competitive songs tally. The track is nearing its first anniversary on the roster, and with one more frame on the ranking, it inches closer to a major milestone. 'Die With a Smile' Lives Inside the Top 10 'Die With a Smile' is present not just on the Hot 100 again, but inside the top 10. This time around, it dips one spot to No. 9 as it celebrates 46 weeks on the chart. As of this latest frame, the tune breaks out of a tie with 'Shallow,' Gaga's duet with Bradley Cooper, and becomes her second-longest-running win on the Hot 100. 'Shallow,' which disappeared after 45 weeks on the list, is pushed down to third place, as it was tied for second with 'Die with a Smile' only days ago. 'Just Dance' Continues to Lead the Charge Another collaboration, 'Just Dance,' which credits Colby O'Donis, still ranks as Gaga's longest-charting track on the Hot 100, but that might not be the case for much longer. 'Just Dance,' which helped introduce Gaga and electronic dance-pop to millions across the U.S. more than a decade ago, lived on the Hot 100 for 49 weeks. Since the beginning of her career, that tune has stood as Gaga's most enduring track, but 'Die With a Smile' doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. 'Die With a Smile' Remains a Huge Radio Smash The Hot 100 is compiled every week by Billboard using a methodology that blends sales, streams, and radio activity to show what songs America is listening to. At the moment, 'Die With a Smile' sits at No. 3 on the Radio Songs chart, No. 20 on the Digital Song Sales ranking, and No. 21 on the Streaming Songs list. The fact that it is still present on all three of those tallies well over 40 weeks into its lifetime show that there's a sustained interest in the throwback-sounding collaboration among a huge population in the country. The Gaga/Mars duet's continued success across all three of Billboard's pop radio charts — it sits inside the top 10 on the Pop Airplay, Adult Contemporary, and Adult Pop Airplay rankings — ensures that 'Die With a Smile' isn't about to vanish anytime soon.

Twenty One Pilots Fans Push The Band's Breakout Album Back To The Charts

Twenty One Pilots' Blurryface returns to six Billboard charts amid its tenth anniversary, reentering ... More the top 10 on Vinyl Albums and Top Alternative Albums lists. LOS ANGELES, CA - FEBRUARY 12: Musicians Josh Dun (L) and Tyler Joseph of Twenty One Pilots attend The 59th GRAMMY Awards at STAPLES Center on February 12, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by) A decade ago, Twenty One Pilots evolved from alternative rock favorites into global pop stars thanks to the album Blurryface. The set produced massive hits like 'Stressed Out,' 'Ride,' and 'Heavydirtysoul,' and it turned the duo into household figures. 10 years later, Twenty One Pilots continue to create new music – in fact, a new full-length titled Breach is expected in just a few weeks. Before fans get their hands on the upcoming release, a reissued edition of Blurryface finds its way back to several Billboard charts. Blurryface Lands on Half a Dozen Billboard Charts Blurryface currently appears on six Billboard rankings in the United States, reentering all but one of them. The project jumps back into the top 10 on both the Vinyl Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts, reappearing at No. 7 on each. It also comes close to the highest tier on the Top Album Sales and Top Rock Albums rankings, returning at Nos. 13 and 12, respectively. On the Billboard 200, Blurryface lands at No. 64. The title is now just one frame shy of hitting 350 total weeks on the most competitive albums tally in America. Blurryface Climbs on the Rock and Alternative List Blurryface doesn't need to return to the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart, as it was already present on that list the prior week. Just days ago, the effort sat in second-to-last place on the 50-spot tally, which ranks the most consumed rock and alternative collections in the country. Now, it surges back toward the loftiest tier, lifting to No. 14. An Anniversary Edition Twenty One Pilots recently issued a special tenth anniversary edition of Blurryface alongside new merchandise, including hats and shirts that honor the project. A red double LP edition is largely to thank for the album's increase in purchases and its chart resurgence. Blurryface's Sales Boost According to Luminate, Blurryface moved 14,200 equivalent units in the U.S. during the past tracking period. Nearly half of that total came from traditional sales, as the title sold just under 7,000 copies across all formats. That figure marks a huge jump from the week before the anniversary reissue shipped, when the project failed to reach even 500 purchases.

B-Side Bangers: Clipse (Pusha T And Malice)

Gregory Bojorquez This weekend in particular has been quite a treat for longstanding hip-hop fans, especially those with a soft spot for early-to-mid-2000s rap, thanks to sibling emcees Pusha T and Malice reuniting as the dynamic rap duo that go by Clipse. Let God Sort Em Out , their new album released this past Friday (July 11) after a 16-year break to pursue solo efforts and personal life, is a testament to the old saying that a bond between brothers is unbreakable. Lucky for us, this bond comes with the added bonus of genius-level lyricism backed by the production of Pharrell Williams. RELATED: B-Side Bangers – Michael Jackson Of course, the effortless musical connection that makes it so easy for Skateboard P to bless the bros with heat on this album is a bond in itself that's been growing for the better part of three decades and counting. From the start, Pusha T and Malice have grown up with the super producer both in life by way of Virginia (see: Pharrell's Piece By Piece LEGO biopic) and in the studio on virtually every album they released as a group. Despite well-documented label disputes that delayed singles and even albums, time proved that Clipse never needed to do more than make music on their own terms for a fanbase that clearly was willing to wait 16 years for a proper follow-up. All things considered though, these guys managed to amass a strong catalogue even with just three albums released prior to Let God Sort Em Out . As a small nod to their decades-spanning hustle, we put together a list of some of their more deeper cuts that will really show you just how busy they got in the studio at their peak. While we all know and love classic tracks like 'Grindin,' 'Hot Damn,' the speaker-thumping 'Mr. Me Too' and synth-savvy 'I'm Good' — don't let Pusha fool you and say Til the Casket Drops didn't give us any heat! — these b-sides will show a different side of the duo that you hear when the song wasn't necessarily made for Billboard.
