Streamlined Perkeso initiative sees 44,998 in B40 group receive aid

KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) has extended assistance to 44,998 individuals nationwide through its Social Synergy Programme from 2019 up to July this year. Its chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, said the initiative has streamlined the aid process by eliminating the need for individuals to knock on the doors of multiple social aid agencies. "The programme, first developed in 2017 as a Perkeso initiative, was designed to eradicate poverty and enhance the standard of living by ensuring that eligible recipients, particularly those in the B40 group, are not left out of the assistance ecosystem. "The issue of exclusion error was highlighted in a 2018 global monitoring agency survey, which revealed that 34 per cent of Malaysian households who were eligible for aid did not receive the financial assistance they urgently needed," he said in his speech at the Social Synergy Congress today. To address this, he said the Social Synergy Programme, which to date has recorded 979 collaborations involving 117 agencies and 862 community leaders nationwide, now acts as the eyes and ears of Perkeso. Azman cited an example where, upon the death of a contributor, strategic partners immediately alert Perkeso to verify the next of kin's eligibility for benefits. "All strategic partners complement one another by matching individuals in need, referred to as prospects, with the relevant agencies under the umbrella of the Social Synergy Programme. "I am pleased to share that between 2019 and July this year, 44,998 prospects from across the country were successfully channelled to various agencies for aid. This integrated approach means those in need no longer have to seek help from one agency after another," he said. He added that Perkeso officers must not remain passive behind counters, waiting for contributors or their next of kin to come forward. "Instead, Perkeso must be proactive by going to the ground to identify and assist eligible contributors and their families. We must be present to lift those who have fallen. "We want the first knock on the door of a grieving family to come not from a debt collector, but from Perkeso, delivering social justice in their time of need," he said. Speaking about the congress, now in its third edition, Azman said it was more than just a physical gathering. "It is a manifestation of unity among various agencies in our mission to eradicate hardcore poverty and to build an inclusive and sustainable social protection network. "With the theme 'Social Synergy Programme: Culture or Process?', this congress invites us to reflect critically — is Social Synergy merely an administrative process governed by models and guidelines, or has it evolved into a culture of inter-agency collaboration rooted in values of humanity, empathy and care?" he said. During the event, Perkeso also signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with three strategic partners, believed to strengthen its mission of building a comprehensive, inclusive and sustainable social protection system. The signing, held in conjunction with the Social Synergy Congress today, involved the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda), the Darul Ta'zim Family Development Foundation (YPKDT), and One Hope Welfare & Charity. The partnership between Perkeso and the three organisations covers cross-agency referral of aid recipients, targeted data sharing and matching, as well as the empowerment of human capital through skills development and socio-economic support.

Malaysia ready to send monitoring team to Thailand-Cambodia border if requested, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya is prepared to send a monitoring team to the Thailand-Cambodia border if requested by both countries, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. However, the Prime Minister said that the decision regarding military presence for monitoring purposes will be made later as the situation along the borders is currently under control. 'Whether military presence is needed for monitoring will be decided later. So far, the situation remains under control, although it is highly sensitive and tense. 'Currently, we have satellites assisting in monitoring, and there is an agreement that this will be coordinated by the Malaysian Defence Attaché. 'The Defence Attaché, along with Asean countries, is only monitoring from a distance,' he said during the Prime Minister's Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 5). He was responding to Rodiyah Sapiee (GPS–Batang Sadong), who asked about Malaysia's role in facilitating peace talks and a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. Anwar also said that so far both countries only requested Malaysia to coordinate further talks among the defence senior officials in Kuala Lumpur, with the decision set to be reached on or by Thursday (Aug 7). In a supplementary question by Rodiyah on whether there should be similar peace frameworks to address such disputes through the Asean Regional Forum, Anwar said that it was still too early to decide. 'In our decision that I conveyed to Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia and Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai of Thailand, we want both of them to agree and reach a final consensus, with Malaysia as a witness, and then be supported by all Asean countries,' he added. Earlier, Anwar expressed gratitude to all parties, including Opposition MPs, for their support of the Malaysia-led ceasefire. On July 28, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire following a special meeting in Putrajaya chaired by Anwar.

'Hypocritical to act against Chinese school's upside-down flag when minister has yet to act on own flag blunder'

BRICKBATS have been hurled at Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek for vowing to take strict action against SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson for flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down. There is little doubt that the PKR Wanita chief who is awaiting a full investigation report into the matter is pressured to act given the opposition which has a bone to pick with DAP has played up the matter to perfection on various social media platforms. 'Has an upside-down flag become an annual event for Merdeka Day8 celebrations?' queried Gerakan Pengundi Sedar (GPS) (@pengundi_sedar) on X. 'Every year, there's bound to be an incident. The excuses are cliché: 'a mistake,', 'don't politicise', '(oversight of a) disabled worker'. Bendera terbalik dah jadi acara tahunan sambutan Merdeka? Tiap tahun mesti ada insiden. Alasan pun klise: 'tersilap', 'jangan politikkan', 'pekerja OKU'. Bila berlaku di kawasan DAP, nada terus jadi defensif. Patriotisme bukan sekadar bendera tapi hormat dan tanggungjawab. — Gerakan Pengundi Sedar (GPS) (@pengundi_sedar) August 4, 2025 'When this happens in a DAP constituency, the tone immediately turns defensive. Patriotism isn't just about the flag but respect and responsibility.' What infuriated sensible Malaysians with regard to Fadhlina's purported action is that the school has apologised for the incident that happened on Aug 1. A statement jointly issued by the school board, administration and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) explained that the error occurred when a school employee was installing flags before the end of their work hours. 'However, due to carelessness, one of the flags was installed upside down. This incident was recorded by the public and uploaded to social media,' read the statement. 'The school received the information around 5pm and took corrective measures immediately.' That Fadhlina is succumbing to political pressure to act against the school rather than to just conduct an internal probe for what is seemingly a 'honest mistake' has irked Malaysiakini subscribers who mocked her for giving the matter a full-blown treatment. 'Fadhlina, are there any countries or organisations which have not ACCIDENTALLY flown their flags upside down? Have YOU not made any mistakes at all?' rued DarkHorse. 'A sensible person would have considered the number of times the flag flown in the correct orientation vs the flag flown upside down before initiating an investigation. That would have been a good indication whether flying the flag upside down is accidental or otherwise.' Others berated the Nibong Tebal MP for 'having nothing better to do' when there is an array of weaknesses in the education system such as 'getting to the root of bully culture in schools and institutes of higher learning' or simply to emulate Finland in the quest to improve the quality of Malaysian education. The best reaction which gave Fadhlina a taste of her own medicine came from BluePanther4725 who wondered if she has taken any action over the flag blunder by her own ministry in April this year.
