Yorkshire Vet star, 73, unveils her 'first-ever tattoo' in spin-off
Yorkshire Vet farmer Jean Green, 73, shocked her husband Steve, 96 when she revealed she had visited a local tattoo parlour during filming of the spin off series At Home With The Greens earlier this year.
Jean enlisted pal Peter Wright 's help in getting her first inking of a Yorkshire Rose on her arm. 'Stephen had said to his daughter [Sarah, now 40] that if she ever came home with a tattoo, she would be kicked out,' says Peter.
'I don't think he would have carried that out, he is such a gentle man. But when Jean came home with the tattoo on her arm, his face was a picture, and you could see in his mind that the old cogs were whirling away in there and he wasn't quite sure how to take it.'
Known as Britain's oldest farming couple, Steve and Jean have been married for more than 40 years and have been friends with Peter for just as long.
'I got to know them well when I was young,' Peter says. 'They became one of my regular clients when I started work in Thirsk in 1982. I had this banter with Mrs Green right from the word go, and we've always had a close relationship. I've always loved going to their farm because of the banter we have.'
Jean, with her brightly coloured sweatshirts and silver bracelets jangling from her wrists, is something of a tour de force on the series, while her husband appears to be much quieter, although Peter says that still waters run deep when it comes to the veteran farmer.
'Stephen is more of a thinker, but once you get him going he's quite a conversationalist. When they were in the first flush of love, he would sit on his tractor out in a field, and he showed me some of the poems he would write to Jean there.
When they renewed their wedding vows after 40 years, he produced one of the poems out of his pocket, which I thought was rather nice.'
Yorkshire vet Peter describes the couple as like 'two lovestruck teenagers' and reveals that Steve and Jean had not spent a night apart until Jean was admitted to hospital for surgery during filming.
'They'd never been apart for a single night up until that point and that just typifies their relationship. There's no cross words whatsoever, but there's lots of fun and joy along the way. It sounds corny, but it's true.'
The Greens, who run Stoneybrough Farm in Thirsk, have a huge following amongst Yorkshire Vet fans, and Peter notes that Jean embraces their popularity, often calling to ask what the weekly viewing figures for the show are and enjoying the letters and packages sent by viewers around the world.
'We get oven gloves, coffee, biscuits, calendars, little kangaroo pouches, random stuff,' he says. 'Jean loves it, she can't wait to open a parcel – not knowing what is inside is a huge attraction for her.'

She went on to say that he was well-known for his request-based and nostalgia shows. It led listeners to send in letters, emails and calls until he retired in 2020. Former BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Gerry Kersey, who became a listeners' favourite during his 50 years in broadcasting, has died. The 86-year-old, who worked for both the BBC and independent radio, had been ill for some time and died on Friday morning with his wife, Christine, at his tribute, Katrina Bunker, Head of BBC Yorkshire, said: "Gerry was a true legend of local broadcasting, starting his career in 1968 as one of the first voices on BBC Radio Sheffield."Away from the microphone, he had a talent for performing in theatre and for art. His paintings featured in exhibitions and he raised money for charity by making and selling Christmas cards featuring his work. In a 2018 interview in the Sheffield Star marking his 50 years in broadcasting, he recalled that in the 1970s he was doing two jobs, handling advertising for local company Stanley Tools and doing radio work."It became an alarmingly unbalanced life," he told the newspaper. But broadcasting eventually won his heart."I decided, with my wife's full approval, that although it was only earning £12 a week I would take it on and see what I could do," he said. It turned out well and Gerry became a listeners' favourite, both for the BBC and on independent station Radio Bunker said: "In later years he was known for request-based and nostalgia shows and he got loads of letters, emails and calls right up to his last show in 2020."Wherever you went around the area you would always meet someone who loved Gerry's show. "Off-mic, Gerry was just as much of a gentleman as he was on it, always encouraging , always warm and proud to still be on the radio after 50 years."He will be sadly missed by all who knew him." Huge fire rips through 150-year-old mill used in Peaky Blinders and Downton Abbey
A HUGE fire has erupted at a 150-year-old mill used in Peaky Blinders and Downtown Abbey. The alarm was raised after flames engulfed Dalton Mills, in Keighley, Yorks., at around 2.45pm today. 4 4 The landmark is known for featuring in the hit tv show Peaky Blinders, starring Cillian Murphy, and Downtown Abbey. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed 12 fire engines from surrounding areas were sent to the scene. This is not the first inferno to tear through the property, with fire crews called there just last month. They battles flames on the third and four floors, and the building was 40 per cent ablaze. North Yorkshire Weather Updates posted on Facebook: "Dalton Mills is on fire again." One disappointed local commented: "Sad to see what's left of our parents, grandparents and great grandparents' past go up in flames. Such a lovely building too." Another penned: "So sad all the old buildings being destroyed." A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Crews responded to a fire involving a large derelict structure. "Hazards on site included significant fire and smoke." 4
