Thomas Partey agrees transfer move to new club after Arsenal exit

Thomas Partey has reached an agreement with his next club after leaving Arsenal as a free agent. The Ghana midfielder ended his five-year spell at the Emirates Stadium at the end of the 2024-25 season. Partey made 167 appearances for the Gunners and almost helped them win the Premier League twice. Mikel Arteta was reportedly keen for Partey to sign a contract extension but a deal could not be reached. The 32-year-old was linked with several European clubs as he contract with Arsenal ran down and Villarreal have won the race to secure his signature. Spanish outlet AS say Villarreal, who finished fifth in La Liga last season, have agreed a one-year deal with Partey. It is claimed Partey is expected to become a Villarreal player next week after he gave the move the green light. If Partey's move to Villarreal goes through, he will join his former Arsenal teammate Nicolas Pepe at the Spanish club. Shortly after he left Arsenal, Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The offences are reported to have taken place in 2021 and 2022, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. Partey denies the charges and 'welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name', his lawyer said. More Trending Following the charges, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he was '100%' sure the club following the right processes while dealing with the matter. 'The club was very clear in its statement,' Arteta added. 'There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that.' Partey, who joined Arsenal in a £45m move from Atletico Madrid in 2020, will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Key clue in unsolved murder of mum, 22, shot dead on her sofa when three men burst into her home 20 years ago

A KEY CLUE has been found in the unsolved murder of a mum shot dead on her sofa when three men burst into her home 20 years ago. The family of the mother, 22, has appealed for anyone with information to come forward. 3 Lucy Hargreaves, 22, was asleep on the sofa when three men burst into her home in Walton, Liverpool, on August 3 2005 and fatally injured her. The killers then set fire to the home on Lambourne Road, where her partner and two-year-old daughter were upstairs, and they had to escape through a window. Two decades on, her family released a previously unshared photograph of the mother-of-three, taken at college. They said: "Over the past 20 years, people will have talked with family and friends. "A number of people were contacted by males using a phone that was stolen, along with a vehicle used in Lucy's murder. "The people who received those calls, along with others, could have information which could be crucial in achieving justice for Lucy, her parents, sister, children and all her extended family and friends. "We appeal directly to them to please come forward. Now is the time." Police arrested 21 people as part of their investigations, but no-one has been convicted. Manhunt Launched in Northampton: River Nene Murder Investigation Underway A comprehensive review into her murder was launched by Merseyside Police two years ago and remains ongoing. Howard Rubbery, head of the serious case review unit, said: "It is now 20 years since Lucy was taken from her family in the most brutal of circumstances. "After carrying out the killing, the offenders ignored the cries of a toddler upstairs as they poured petrol around the house and set fire to it. "Their callous and reckless actions could have claimed the lives of two more people that night, had they not escaped the flames by jumping from a window upstairs. "We are as determined as ever to get justice for Lucy, whose death robbed her family of a loving mother and daughter. "As with any unsolved murder, time is no barrier to our pursuit of justice for Lucy and we appeal to anyone with any information, no matter how small it may seem, to contact us." Ms Hargreaves' family, who said they "miss her every single day", welcomed a focus on tackling violence against women and girls in recent years. They praised the families of other victims of gun crime, including the mothers of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt Korbel and Ashley Dale, 28, who were shot in their homes in separate incidents in Liverpool in August 2022. The family said: "We greatly admire the determination and guts of the families of those who have more recently been killed as a result of gun crime here in Merseyside. "The mums of both Ashley Dale and Olivia Pratt Korbel have led a real and powerful community challenge to men of violence." The family added: "We consider ourselves to be an ordinary local family with strong roots in the Walton, Norris Green, Croxteth and Dovecot areas of Liverpool. "Lucy's nanny Joyce was a strong mother of eight who had to cope with the loss of three granddaughters in her lifetime - including Lucy. "Her nanny Betty, left a widow aged 35 with six children to bring up, was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to nursing as an auxiliary nurse in the Royal Liverpool Hospital. "They were two strong local women typical of their generation, and Lucy too was a strong woman who could have achieved so much had she only been given the opportunity." Detectives are continuing to appeal for anyone with information about a gold Lexus car, believed to have been dumped shortly after the shooting on Richard Kelly Drive, Clubmoor, by a number of men who then ran in the direction of Normandale Road. Police previously said they wanted to speak to Kevin Thomas Parle in connection with Ms Hargreaves' murder. Parle, who was believed to be living abroad, was also wanted in connection with the murder of Liam Kelly, 16, who was shot in the early hours of June 19 2004 in Dingle, Liverpool. 3

Graham Potter delivers update on Lucas Paqueta's West Ham future - after the Brazilian's two-year spot-fixing nightmare finally came to an end

Graham Potter has discussed Lucas Paqueta's future at West Ham after the midfielder was cleared of spot-fixing charges by the FA following a two-year investigation. Mail Sport broke the story of the FA's probe back in August 2023 when it was suspected Paqueta had been purposefully picking up yellow cards in order to influence betting markets. The 27-year-old was accused of deliberately getting booked in four Premier League games, against Leicester in 2022, and Leeds United, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth the following year. Paqueta reportedly could have faced a lifetime ban from football if he was found guilty. However, on Thursday the 27-year-old was cleared of the spot-fixing charges and he later took to social media to share a defiant post thanking West Ham fans for their support. In the wake of the decision, some reports linked Paqueta with a £30million return to his homeland - with boyhood club Flamengo said to be interested. The 27-year-old had been linked with a return to his native Brazil but Potter suggested the verdict means he is more likely to stay Hammers boss Potter meanwhile is confident the midfielder will remain in East London this summer. 'You never know for sure because anything can happen in the window with anybody,' said Potter. 'But the news is incredibly positive. If it had gone the other way, there would have been a whole other line of questions. 'Lucas is happy and committed. He is an important person in dressing room and at the club and we love him. We just want to help him enjoy his football. 'You can imagine on a personal level for him, having to fight those allegations was an incredible challenge for him. It has been a really tough period in his life and career. 'It is a credit to him and his family and everyone who has supported him that he has come through.' Paqueta had been linked with an £80m move to Manchester City after he capped off his debut season in England by setting up Jarrod Bowen's winning goal in the 2023 Conference League final. The move collapsed shortly after however, when West Ham informed Pep Guardiola's side that he was being investigated due to suspicious betting patterns.
