Title: Preamble
Content: Major tournaments can be a brutal business. After months of anticipation, it can all be over in a matter of days – which is particularly tough on debutants. For Poland, three decades of trying but failing to reach a major finals came to an end with a surprise playoff win over Austria.
Poland began their Group C campaign with a creditable 2-0 defeat to Germany, but with said opponents beating Denmark in Basel, Nina Patalon's side will likely need a result against Sweden – another former champion – or see their Euros dream end, four days after their tournament began.
Sweden, who got the better of Denmark in their opener, will start as heavy favourites but Poland have a world-class forward in Ewa Pajor, and they have overcome the odds just to be there. One result can still change everything. Kick-off is at 8pm BST, 9pm local time.

Manchester United fans announce opening day protest against Jim Ratcliffe

A Manchester United supporters' group has announced a fresh protest against the Glazer family and, for the first time, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, ahead of their Premier League opener against Arsenal. The 1958, a fan collective, will march to Old Trafford on 17 August. They will carry banners reading 'Jim Can't Fix This'. Ratcliffe, who acquired a 28.94 per cent stake and took day-to-day operational control from the Glazers in February 2024, has overseen wide, often unpopular, changes. The group has previously . 'It's a new season but the same old ownership issues. Twenty years of the Glazers and their debt mountain is 20 years too long. Enough is enough,' a spokesman for The 1958 said. 'We won't allow some natural optimism and a couple of shiny new signings to deflect from the bigger off-field picture. 'Jim Ratcliffe chose to get into bed with the Glazers and in our opinion is helping keep them in charge.' The spokesman said Ratcliffe had once been seen as 'a possible saviour, a beacon of hope', but had since been revealed as 'complicit in the ongoing erosion of everything that makes our club what it is'. 'This is no longer just about ownership; this is about survival – the survival of our identity, our community, and our values.' Ratcliffe suggested in March that he would walk away from United if he ever suffered abuse on the level of that directed at the Glazer family. 'It can be unpleasant,' Ratcliffe said in the Times. 'And I've probably failed on the having fun front. 'I can put up with it for a while. I don't mind being unpopular because I get that nobody likes seeing Manchester United down where they are, and nobody likes the decisions we're having to make. 'Eventually, if it reached the extent that the Glazer family have been abused, then I'd have to say, 'look, that's enough guys, let somebody else do this'.' United finished 15th in the Premier League last season – their lowest top-flight finish since 1974 – and missed out on European qualification after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

Ravel Morrison joins ex-Man United and Chelsea stars on new PFA transfer list as he eyes English football comeback after playing for 14 clubs in as many years

Ravel Morrison has been named as a surprise inclusion in the list of free agents that will attend week six of the PFA's pre-season training as he eyes a return to English football. The United academy product - who played alongside the like of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard - was tipped to be a future first-team star but struggled to live up to expectations. He ultimately left the club in 2012, after concerns over off the field problems and number of injures, before he eventually joined West Ham. Back in September, Morrison signed for the 14th club of his rollercoaster career - Precision FC in Dubai - but is now unattached again and eyeing a return to English football. This summer, the PFA - the Professional Footballers' Association - have been putting on training camps for free agents looking to stay fit and play games while they don't have a club to do that with. And Morrison has been included on the Association's list for the sixth week of the camp, joining 21 other players including a fellow ex-Manchester United star and a former Chelsea man. Alongside Morrison is former United academy player Ryan Tunnicliffe, who played with Morrison in United's FA Youth Cup-winning team of 2011. He has since featured for the likes of Fulham and Portsmouth. As is Jamal Blackman, formerly of Chelsea, while the likes of Jake Cain were formerly on Liverpool's books. Morrison hasn't played in England since the 2021-22 season, when he was on Derby County's books. He is now 32, but went to the United States to play for DC United, while he has also turned out for the likes of Lazio, QPR and West Ham in his career. He also played in the Baller League. An England youth international up to Under-21 level, meanwhile, Morrison has also been playing for Jamaica, who are managed by former Three Lions boss Steve McClaren. Earlier this year, he pleaded with English clubs to take a chance on him despite his reputation. He told The Athletic: 'I do believe I can play in the Championship, easy. The frustrating thing is I'm not getting the opportunity. 'My agent has spoken to a lot of sporting directors, chief scouts and heads of recruitment, and we've got really close to an agreement. 'Then they get the manager's opinion and it becomes, "Ah, but he's done this, he's done that", and they are speaking about things that happened when I was a kid. The PFA have named a 22-man squad for the training camp on week six of their summer camp 'Time has moved on, it's over a decade ago. But it's crazy sometimes how people don't move on. 'So many people have formed an opinion about me, but those opinions are based on things that happened 10 to 15 years ago. 'I'm 32 now. I've played football around the world and had a good career. I'm not a kid of 16 or 17 anymore.
