Chiikawa fans brave Hong Kong summer swelter for ‘preheat' fun before exhibition

Hong Kong fans of the popular Japanese manga series Chiikawa braved the sweltering sun to take pictures of art installations featuring popular characters on Saturday and snapped up tickets online for a coming exhibition, with some saying the event will keep them in the city over the summer. Advertisement Dozens of people queued up near the Space Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui on Saturday morning for a 'preheat celebration' ahead of the official exhibition opening next month, featuring the three most recognisable characters – Chiikawa, Usagi and Hachiware. It is the second summer in a row that the exhibition's organiser, Hong Kong design studio AllRightsReserved, will host a large-scale event using an anime icon. Last year's Doraemon exhibition attracted crowds and was said to have boosted business in the area. Saturday's preheat celebration allowed fans to take pictures at the installations while visitors will be able to buy merchandise with local characteristics at next month's exhibition. She said that the coming exhibition, where products including keychains, clothes and bags will be sold, would foster community cohesion and benefit the local economy because of the charisma of the characters.

Why pickle juice is a trending cocktail ingredient, from margaritas to martinis

If you have a cocktail scene in your neck of the woods, you might have noticed the words 'pickle juice' appearing more often on drink menus. Advertisement Pickles and pickle brine have been ingredients that mixologists – and chefs – have played with for a long time, but they are finally getting a star turn in drinks menus around the world. Pickle juice is salty, tangy, acidic and sometimes a little spicy. It adds zing to all kinds of cocktails. 'Pickles are a great gateway into savoury cocktails,' says Camille Goldstein, managing partner of Muddling Memories, a hospitality company based in Brooklyn, in New York, that promotes drinks as an experience. 'The sweet-salty brine of a pickle really creates an interesting depth of flavour for your margarita, martini or even a highball,' she says. A pickleback is basically a shot of whiskey with a pickle brine chaser. Photo: Shutterstock A drink called the pickleback has been popular for years. Said to have originated at a Brooklyn bar called Bushwick Country Club, it consists of a shot of whiskey followed by a shot of pickle brine. Word spread.
