Italian Region "Tuscany" Cuts Ties with Israel
The Tuscany region of Italy announced the severance of ties with Israel following a vote by the regional council.
Earlier, in a speech delivered at a concert held by the Teatro San Carlo Orchestra, conducted by maestro Richard Frezza, in honor of the diplomatic corps accredited to Rome on the occasion of Republic Day, Italian President Sergio Mattarella delivered a powerful humanitarian message about the tragic situation in the Gaza Strip. He described the suffering of the Strip's residents—from children to the elderly—as "inhumane and dangerous," according to the Italian news agency Nova.
Mattarella stressed the need for the Israeli army to open the way for international organizations to operate in Gaza, in order to ensure the full flow of humanitarian aid to civilians suffering from hunger and blockade. He warned that the continuation of this situation portends dangerous consequences.
The Italian President pointed to what he described as "the erosion of the lands attributed to the Palestinian National Authority," considering this course of action a real threat to the two-state solution. He emphasized that the Palestinians have the right to a recognized homeland within clear borders, while affirming that Israel's security is a fundamental element in any future settlement.
He also considered that sowing suffering in the region fuels resentment and threatens to undermine the prospects for political solutions.
Mattarella emphasized that "the refusal to apply the standards of international humanitarian law to the people of Gaza is unacceptable," calling for an immediate ceasefire and warning that the current crisis is contributing to the rise of anti-Semitism around the world.
In a broader perspective, the Italian President expressed his deep concern about the threats to the decades-old global order, saying that "an international order based on mutual respect is essential to avoid conflicts and direct resources towards the major challenges facing humanity, such as sustainable development."
Mattarella also recalled the war in Ukraine, affirming Italy's "firm and resolute" support for Kyiv and emphasizing the importance of working for a "just, comprehensive, and lasting peace."
He concluded his remarks by emphasizing that Italian Republic Day, which falls on June 2, embodies the Italian people's choice for peace, freedom, and independence, under the banner of rejecting violence.
He emphasized that Italian foreign policy, since the founding of the Republic, has been based on rejecting the concept of "the enemy," encouraging dialogue, and strengthening international organizations that seek to achieve peace and justice.

US to refuse visas to Palestinian Authority officials - Region
Washington said Thursday it would deny visas to Palestinian Authority officials and sharply criticised the body which governs parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, just as multiple US allies move to recognise Palestinian statehood. The State Department did not specify who was being targeted, only saying it would deny visas to "members" of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and "officials" from the Palestinian Authority (PA). The organisations are "taking actions to internationalise its conflict with Israel such as through the International Criminal Court (ICC) and International Court of Justice (ICJ)," the State Department said in a statement. It also accused the groups of "continuing to support terrorism, including incitement and glorification of violence," and of "providing payments and benefits in support of terrorism to Palestinian terrorists and their families." Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar welcomed the US sanctions, saying the gesture displayed "moral clarity." The measures against the PA, whose leader, Mahmud Abbas, has been widely recognised for years as a key partner in efforts to resolve the conflict, come as growing numbers of countries consider recognising a Palestinian state. Canada and France are among the latest nations to announce they will grant recognition during the UN General Assembly meeting, which takes place in September in New York. The US visa denials could possibly complicate attendance to the meeting by Palestinian leaders. The PA is a civilian ruling authority in areas of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where about three million Palestinians live -- as well as around half a million Israelis occupying settlements considered illegal under international law. The United States is also ratcheting up pressure on the International Criminal Court, which has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Saar accused the Palestinian Authority of paying "terrorists" and their families for attacks against Israeli targets and of inciting people against Israel in schools, textbooks, mosques, and Palestinian media. "This important action by President Trump and his administration also exposes the moral distortion of certain countries that rushed to recognize a virtual Palestinian state while turning a blind eye to the PA's support for terrorism and incitement," Saar wrote on X. Egypt welcomes Canada, Malta pledge to recognize Palestinian statehood - Foreign Affairs
Egypt welcomed recent announcements from the Canadian and Maltese governments to recognize the state of Palestine. According to a statement from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cairo said the "growing number of countries moving toward recognition is a historic step that supports the long-standing calls from Egypt and other Arab nations for a Palestinian state." The Canadian and Maltese announcements come days after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron also pledged to recognise the Palestinian state formally. Such steps are crucial for restoring the "legitimate and inalienable rights" of the Palestinian people, the ministry added. The announcement by the four Western countries that they intend to recognise Palestinian statehood comes amid global outrage over the deaths of tens of Palestinians in Gaza from starvation due to a five-month-old total blockade on the strip. The recent announcements step up pressure on Israel to end its war in Gaza and its settlement expansion in the West Bank. Egypt also reiterated its call for all countries that have not yet recognised Palestine to do so "quickly." Cairo urged nations to "stand on the right side of history" and contribute to the implementation of a two-state solution, establishing an independent Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced their nations' intention to recognise the Palestinian state during a UN gathering in September. To date, 147 of the 193 UN member states—roughly three-quarters—have recognised the Palestinian state. Since the outbreak of Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, several countries such as Norway, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia, and other non-European nations, have officially recognised Palestinian statehood, with other countries signalling they may follow suit. There have even been calls for Palestine to be granted full membership to the UN, a move that would grant it the right to vote and fully participate. Since 2012, Palestine has been granted non-member observer status at the UN In May 2024, the UN General Assembly voted to expand Palestine's rights within the body, allowing greater participation in committee work, though without granting voting rights.
