Day After Tax Notice, Maharashtra Minister Seen With Bag Allegedly Full Of Cash
Maharashtra Minister Sanjay Shirsat has sparked a row after a video surfaced online allegedly showing him smoking in a private room with a bag suspected to be filled with cash beside him. The footage went viral just a day after he confirmed receiving an income tax notice to explain a sharp increase in his assets between the 2019 and 2024 Assembly elections.
The video was posted on social media by Sanjay Raut of the rival Shiv Sena (UBT) faction. In a pointed attack on the ruling alliance, Mr Raut wrote, "I feel pity for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis! How many more times will he just sit and watch his reputation being torn to shreds? Helplessness has another name - Fadnavis!"
Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat contended that the bag next to his bed contained clothes and not cash as claimed by Mr Raut.
Mr Shirsat, who represents Aurangabad (West) and belongs to the Shiv Sena faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, confirmed that the Income Tax Department had issued him a notice seeking clarification on the growth of his personal assets over the past five years.
"Some people had filed a complaint against me with the income-tax department, based on which I was issued a notice. I was supposed to respond to it on Wednesday, but requested for more time. I will give a proper response. Nothing wrong has been done," Mr Shirsat said.
Mr Raut's party colleague Aaditya Thackeray also jumped to criticise Mr Shirsat, urging the tax department and Chief Minister Fadnavis to take action.
"Today, it's Sanjay Sirsat, sitting in his vest and underwear. We talk about 'Khokhe' (boxes of cash), '50 Khokhe, Ekdum Okay', one is clearly seen in the video. All these antics happening in just vests and undergarments, bags full of cash beside him, where did all this money come from? Who gave it? Can anyone just roam around carrying such wads of notes? And regarding the Income Tax notice that came the day before, will the IT department take any action? Will any action be taken on the orders of the Chief Minister or not? These are important questions that need answers," Mr Thackeray said.
Yesterday, Mr Shirsat initially claimed that Shrikant Shinde, Lok Sabha MP and son of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, had also received a similar notice. He later retracted the statement, saying: "Someone asked me a leading question... My response was presented as if I was confirming a notice to Shrikant Shinde. I want to clarify that I have no information about that."
In a separate incident earlier this week, a video clip of Mr Shirsat speaking at an event in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar surfaced online, where he appeared to make light of the situation. In the video, the minister is heard saying: "Now, black money is not going to be useful. I am speaking for myself."
He added that he has already contacted his chartered accountant and is preparing a detailed response to the notice. "It is easy to earn money, but using it has become difficult," he quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.
The minister attempted to downplay the clip, insisting that his comments were meant humorously and not intended to admit wrongdoing.

NEW DELHI: The loco pilots' union has alleged that various railway zones are manipulating the working hours of train drivers by falsely entering duty breaks during their 12 to 16-hour-long trips in the online Crew Management System (CMS) to hide their overutilisation. As per railway norms, a loco pilot cannot be asked to work more than 9 hours at a stretch and no more than 11 hours in total from sign-on to sign-off. Since 2021, the Safety Department of the Railway Board has instructed all zonal railways that 80 per cent of trips should be completed within the 9-hour limit. The Railway Ministry had earlier stated that it has not only initiated aggressive recruitment of loco pilots but also created several amenities for them, including urinal facilities in over 900 locomotives, air-conditioning systems in over 7,000 locomotives, and upgraded all 558 running rooms across the rail network. The All India Loco Running Staff Association (AILRSA) stated that safety regulations prohibit overburdening loco pilots with excessive duty hours. They alleged that rail administrations are regularly violating these rules to compensate for a 15 - 20 per cent staff shortage. "Though this illegal practice is happening in many divisions and zones, we have started by raising the issue with the General Manager of East Central Railway (ECR). We have submitted a memorandum compiling several issues that affect loco pilots' working conditions, including the false trip break," said Ashok Kumar Raut, General Secretary of AILRSA. The ECR has not responded to the allegations. However, following Raut's representation, one of ECR's divisions, Dhanbad, issued a circular dated July 15, 2025, warning of strict action against the false insertion of duty breaks between sign-on and sign-off in the CMS. "A direction is being issued to all to not break duty hours between the sign-on and sign-off of the crew while registering it in CMS (Crew Management System). If it is happening in any crew lobby, it must be stopped immediately. If such cases are found, strict disciplinary action will be taken," the circular stated. Raut explained that lobby officials record the sign-on and sign-off times of loco pilots in the CMS when their shift starts and ends, respectively.

However, in cases where a loco pilot works for more than 12 hours, contractual staff at the lobby are allegedly inserting fake duty breaks — ranging from 45 minutes to 2 hours — on verbal orders from senior officials to conceal overutilisation. Each railway division submits monthly crew working hours data to the Railway Board in a fixed format. These duty breaks are reportedly used to avoid detection of excessive working hours, which violates operational safety norms. 'This illegal and unsafe practice of inserting duty breaks in the system is being done on the verbal orders of some senior officials, such as the Chief Traction Loco Controller and Chief Crew Controller. Railways has outsourced CMS data entry work to private personnel, and these officials instruct them to insert such breaks," Raut alleged. He added, 'I have gathered data from some divisions on illegal trip breaks by lobby staff. In May and June 2025, in the Dhanbad division alone, there were 2,719 such cases; 1,883 in the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar division; and 785 in the Danapur division." He also claimed that the Samastipur and Sonpur divisions manipulated working hours in 304 and 83 cases, respectively. Earlier this year, in April, South Central Railway reviewed CMS data on loco pilots' working hours and found that, in 545 cases in the Secunderabad division, 42 in Vijayawada, 26 in Guntakal, three each in Guntur and Nanded, and one in the Hyderabad division, goods train loco pilots worked between 13:55 and 14:00 hours but were compelled to feed incorrect times to hide actual duty hours. Karnataka Minister K J George Clarifies IT Interaction As Routine, Denies Link To Smart Meter Project
Karnataka Energy Minister K J George on Friday said the recent interaction with the Income Tax Department was a routine regulatory exercise and had no connection with the state's smart meter initiative or any project under the Energy Department. In a post on social media platform X, George refuted reports linking the IT searches to government contracts and clarified that the exercise was related only to the verification of income tax filings of companies associated with him. In view of the misinformation being circulated regarding myself and the companies under my chairmanship, purportedly in connection with the KJ George (@thekjgeorge) August 1, 2025 George said that the interaction with the Income Tax Department was "a routine regulatory exercise solely about the verification of our companies' income tax filings." He added, "There is no connection whatsoever to any government project or department, including the Smart Meter program or the Energy Department." The minister's social media post comes in the wake of reports following Income Tax searches at the Embassy GolfLinks Business Park in Bengaluru earlier this week. Some reports had linked the searches to alleged irregularities in the smart metering project. George said all teams concerned had extended full cooperation during the process and reiterated their commitment to transparency and legal compliance. He further stated that no entity associated with the Energy Department was under any form of scrutiny. "The smart metering project in Karnataka is being implemented with complete transparency, due diligence, and adherence to all regulatory norms," he added. The government of Karnataka's smart meter initiative, launched to curb power losses and improve billing efficiency, has been a key part of the government's push toward a digitally enabled and accountable power sector.
