Virginia city councilman, Lee Vogler, died in a violent attack Wednesday after he was set on fire by a man who attacked him due to personal matters unrelated to Vogler's political work.
The 38-year-old was doused in gasoline by the suspect, who had forced his way into Vogler's office. As Vogler fled outside, yelling for help, the suspect chased him and ignited the flames.
The suspect, 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes of Danville, was taken into police custody, and charges are pending. Police have not released further details on how the suspect gained entry to the locked office.
The incident occurred at the office of Showcase Magazine, a monthly publication serving southwest Virginia and North Carolina, where Vogler also works as a salesperson and writer.
According to magazine owner Andrew Scott Brooks, two employees were inside at the time.
Brooks described the terrifying scene, as quoted by AP, 'They forced their way into the office, and went to Lee. The next thing, Lee is running through the office covered in gasoline, yelling for our officemate to call 911. The guy chased him outside and set him on fire.'
Vogler was immediately flown to a burn unit at a hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

V
ogler has served on the Danville City Council for over 12 years and is currently in his fourth term. He is known for his dedication to the community, having formed a group called Moving Danville Forward to revitalize the city.
Brooks said Vogler's passion lies in serving on the city council and helping residents with their concerns. 'He loves when people call them with a concern that he can help them with, and he has been an asset to the community for much of his adult life,' Brooks said.
Voogler is survived by his two sons and wife and actively coaches their sports teams.
Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin quickly condemned the attack, stating, 'Our prayers go out to Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler who was violently attacked at his workplace earlier today. We pray for a swift recovery for Lee and for peace to be on the entire Danville community.'

After six years in jail, Mumbai man gets bail from Supreme Court in biz partner's murder

Mumbai: The Supreme Court granted bail to Sarang Patharkar, who was in jail for nearly six years in connection with the murder of his former business partner and ex-journalist Anand Narayan in Mumbai's Antop Hill area in 2019. The apex court cited prolonged incarceration and the absence of prior criminal records as key reasons for granting bail. The court set aside the order of the Bombay High Court's bail rejection in August 2024. "We have considered the submissions. Having regard to the fact that the appellant already suffered incarceration of about six years pending trial, and it is not pointed out that he has previous criminal antecedents, we are of the view that it is a fit case where the appellant be released on bail pending conclusion of the trial," the Supreme Court bench observed. The court directed that Patharkar be released on bail under conditions deemed appropriate by the trial court. She also pointed out that despite two time-bound directives from the Bombay High Court, the trial made little progress, with only 19 out of 51 witnesses examined so far. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Anand Narayan, a former sales executive with a Marathi news channel, was found murdered in his apartment at Penta Galaxy, Antop Hill, on June 4, 2019. Police alleged that Patharkar killed Narayan following a financial dispute over a failed hotel business venture. The case is primarily based on circumstantial evidence, including CCTV footage and the testimony of a mutual friend who was present during the incident. Chilean rescuers recover bodies of 4 miners trapped in collapsed shaft

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Bogota (Colombia), Aug 3 (AP) The bodies of four out of five miners trapped in a collapsed section of one of Chile's biggest copper mines for three days have been found and identified, an official said Sunday. Rescue workers at the El Teniente mine, about 100 kilometres south of the capital Santiago, are still looking for the fifth miner, identified as Moises Pavez, mine director Andres Music said. The trapped miners were located thanks to GPS devices, but rescue workers had to drill through dozens of metres of rock to reach them. A section of the mine collapsed following a 4.2 magnitude quake on Thursday, killing one worker and injuring nine others. Authorities are investigating whether it was a naturally occurring earthquake or whether mining activity at El Teniente caused the tremor. Chilean prosecutors also launched a criminal investigation to determine whether any safety standards were violated. El Teniente, located in the Andes mountains in central Chile, is the world's largest underground copper mine and is owned by Chilean state company Codelco. Shortly after Thursday's collapse, Codelco halted operations at the affected section of the copper mine and evacuated 3,000 people from the wider site to safe areas. The company cancelled a presentation of its first-half financial results, set for Friday morning, due to the rescue efforts. Chile, the world's largest copper producer, also lies in the seismically active 'Ring of Fire" that surrounds the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
