'You cannot replicate what he does': England legend heaps massive praise on Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant has impressed former England captain David Gower with his fearless batting. Pant amassed a healthy figure in the series and could not held back from taking the attack to the opposition even when he was batting with an injured foot. read more The courage Rishabh Pant showed the other day in Manchester has won the hearts of millions across the world. Former England captain David Gower is also largely impressed with India's wicketkeeper batter, so much so that he has claimed that what Pant does on the field, 'others can only dream of and takes incredible to another level.' Gower, who is touted as one of the finest left-hand batters to have graced the game, could not stop raving about Pant, who trudged to the middle with a broken foot on Day 2 of the STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Talking about the grace that left-handers carry, Gower keeps Brian Lara in the highest regard in this department, but spoke highly of Ben Duckett and Rishabh Pant, who have been brilliant with the bat in the series in England. 'Tongue-in-cheek…we have always said left-handers are the best. For some reason when you look at left-handed batsmen it seems to be more graceful than right-handed. I've watched a lot of great left-handers from my days growing up, Gary Sobers for one, Brian Lara of course probably the best of those when I was first starting to grace commentary boxes and describe these things,' Gower told PTI. 'Now we have a guy called Ben Duckett, he has a very different style to mine but incredible to watch. Every time I look at him bat you're kind of wondering what happens next and you cannot forget, especially in the context of this series, Rishabh Pant.' Gower said the series would be poorer in Pant's absence if the Indian star is ruled out of the remainder of the series. 'I'm actually so sorry that he's injured, and if this foot thing is terminal (and he is out of the series). There is a man who does the things that only others dream of. Some people call them nightmares, but he's an absolutely brilliant, extraordinary player to watch. Gower gushes about Pant According to Gower, the characteristics Pant possesses are hard to find, and one either has it or not. 'So, you cannot replicate what he does. You cannot ask a young player, say age 15-16 to bat like Rishabh Pant, go on try that because that would be probably fatal to their career. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'But when you've got someone like that who plays this most extraordinary version of the game, you cannot but admire it. He takes incredible to another level,' said Gower.

Root surpasses Ponting, next in sight is all-time leading run-getter Tendulkar

Manchester, Jul 25 (PTI) The prolific Joe Root on Friday surpassed Australian legend Ricky Ponting's tally to become the second highest run-getter in the history of Test cricket and next in sight of the England batter is Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar who continues to head the list. On the third day of the fourth Test against India here, Root first leapfrogged legendary Indian Rahul Dravid and South African great Jacques Kallis' aggregate of runs in a space of eight balls and then went past Ponting by steering the ball behind point for a single as the Old Trafford crowd gave him a standing ovation. Ponting had scored 13378 runs in 168 matches at an average of 51.85, while Tendulkar continues to top the list with 15921 runs. It was apt that Ponting was in the commentary box when Root went past him. The 34-year-old Root began his Test career with a 73-run knock on debut during England's tour of India back in 2012 at Nagpur. 'Congrats, Joe Root. Magnificent," a delighted Ponting, doing commentary alongside Ravi Shastri, hailed the Yorkshire man. Root is playing in his 157th Test. It was some sight as England skipper Ben Stokes, who was also in the middle, raised his bat even before Root could take off his helmet and acknowledged the cheers and applause from the crowd and the players Earlier, Root entered the history books by breaking the record of most Test centuries against India with his 12th hundred against the Asian giants, against whom he has played in 34 Tests so far. Overall, the ton at Old Trafford was his 38th in red ball format as he joined former Sri Lanka star Kumar Sangakkara at fourth place in the list of centurions in the game's longest format. Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45) and Ponting (41) are ahead of him in the hundred's list. How Many Tests Does Joe Root Need To Beat Sachin Tendulkar's Most Runs Record?

Joe Root has surpassed Dravid, Kallis, and Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. How many Tests does he need to go past Sachin Tendulkar? Joe Root is on a record-breaking spree and the biggest record left for him is India great Sachin Tendulkar's for most runs ever in Test cricket — 15,921. On Friday (July 25), he became the second-highest run-scorer in the format with 13380 runs, going past Rahul Dravid (13288), Jaques Kallis (13289), and Ricky Ponting (13378) in the same innings of 121* (201), at Tea in the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Old Trafford. The question begs itself — can Root be the one to break Tendulkar's currently 12-year-old record, which many thought would never be touched, which Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and several other greats couldn't come even close to? If he can, how many Tests would he need to do so and etch him at the top of the world? It's difficult to say exactly, but Root has averaged 89 since the start of 2024, and according to CricViz (a sports analytics company), if he maintains that rate, he will need only 29 more Tests to pass Tendulkar and become the format's leading run scorer. Considering England play at least a dozen Tests every year (they played 17 in 2024), he'd need about two and a half years to reach the feat. To put how quick Root is in context, the 17 Tests in 2024 yielded 1556 runs for him. Of course, this is the best-case scenario. Apart from the difficulty of maintaining a purple patch like this for that significant period, Root would also need to keep himself fit. He's 34 and will turn 35 this December, and though he's fit, it'll become progressively arduous for him to maintain fitness, just like Tendulkar, Kallis, and Ponting also faced. However, Tendulkar played 200 Tests, and Ponting 168, while Root is still at 157. Ponting's prediction for Root's records Earlier in the day, Ponting had tipped Root to break his record. He was also asked about the Englishman's chances of going past Tendulkar. 'There's still a fair bit to go," Ponting told ICC. 'What is he, 35? Doesn't look like his passion for the game is going anywhere. His run-scoring passion has probably gone up over the years. Can he chase down Sachin? Let's see. He might as well do that," he added.
