New signing Mugabi watches Carlisle United after completing Blues move
Bevis Mugabi watched his new team-mates in action a day after completing his move to Carlisle United. The defender, who signed a two-year deal last Friday, was at AFC Fylde the following day to see the Blues' 2-0 pre-season victory. Head coach Mark Hughes said former Yeovil Town, Motherwell and Anorthosis Famagusta centre-back Mugabi is not yet ready to be thrown into action. But he believes the 30-year-old will prove an asset to the Blues' defence once he eventually makes his bow. 'He's got all the qualities you imagine from a defender,' Hughes told the News & Star. 'He's got that physicality that we're [often] talking about. 'He can play in lots of different positions. He can play right side, he can play right across the back, he can even do a job in midfield. 'That flexibility is what I wanted to bring and we've got a number of players that can play in a number of positions, which is going to help us.' Hughes said Mugabi has recently been back in Cyprus 'trying to tie up his loose ends there' following his departure from Anorthosis, where he spent last season after five years at Motherwell. Keep up, Cristiano! How new Blues signing broke Ronaldo's record 'It will take a little bit of time, a couple of weeks, before he's ready [to play],' the Blues boss added. Mugabi is a Uganda international and Hughes added: 'He's got a lot of good international experience now. 'He's been prepared, at times, to go out of his comfort zone and get good football at a good level. 'I'm looking forward to working with him.' Keep up, Cristiano! How new Blues signing broke Ronaldo's record
As footballing claims to fame go, getting the better of Cristiano Ronaldo isn't bad... And that's a boast new Carlisle United signing Bevis Mugabi can make. The 30-year-old defender, who has just signed a two-year deal with the Cumbrians after leaving Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta, broke a record set by Ronaldo four years ago. Mugabi leapt 8ft 6ins off the ground to head the winner for Motherwell against Ross County in February 2021. The Uganda international's jump was measured at an inch higher than Ronaldo's leap when the latter famously soared to score for Juventus against Sampdoria just over a year earlier. Ronaldo's moment became iconic as the Portuguese legend hung in the air to nod the winner in a 2-1 Serie A victory for Juve at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Mugabi, though, trumped the international star when he rose to power home a header at Dingwall as Motherwell defeated Ross 2-1 in the Scottish Premiership. Carlisle United sign former Motherwell and Yeovil defender The new Blues defender later explained how he honed the jumping power that saw him trump Ronaldo. "I work on it in the gym by doing box jumps and I'm always trying to add to my game," he told the Daily Record via Lanarkshire Live Sport. "I always try to enter every game being as fit as possible - sprinting the fastest, jumping the highest or recovery runs." And on beating Ronaldo's record, Mugabi joked: "He's a very competitive guy so I might need to drop him a DM and say, 'Bro you need to up your game.' "It's nice to get compared to one of the greatest of all-time and being able to jump as high as him is mad." Now watch the two goals below, and judge for yourself who did it best. Here's Ronaldo first... And here goes Mugabi...
