High school students glimpse potential of a career in medicine at WCM-Q

Zawya16-03-2025
Doha – Thirty-three high school students spent a week at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) discovering careers in medicine during the winter session of the Qatar Medical Explorer Program (QMEP).
QMEP, an immersive enrichment program offered by WCM-Q's Office of Student Outreach & Educational Development, provides a snapshot of life as a student at WCM-Q and detailed information about careers in medicine. The program is open to grade 10 and 11 students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a particular aptitude for the sciences and mathematics.
During the weeklong program, the high school students took part in a carefully designed series of sessions designed to accurately reproduce the experiences of current WCM-Q students, with classes in biology, chemistry, anatomy, surgery, and research.
There was also a presentation on the life of a practicing physician by a member of the WCM-Q faculty, plus opportunities to meet admissions officers, icebreaker sessions, and a mock admissions interview to help the students prepare for applying to college. The students also experienced practical classes in WCM-Q's state-of-the-art Clinical Skills and Simulation Lab, before giving an oral presentation of a research project to their peers and WCM-Q faculty on the penultimate day of the program. On the evening of final day, the high school students were invited to join current WCM-Q students, faculty and staff for International Night, which celebrates the cultural diversity of the college community.
Noha Saleh, director of premedical administration, student outreach and educational development, said: 'QMEP is designed to give a very accurate impression to high school students of what life as a WCM-Q student is like and a clear understanding of what a career in science will entail. We are very happy to provide this chance for students to explore WCM-Q and we are certain that a great many of this year's cohort left feeling very inspired about pursuing a career in medicine.'
WCM-Q also runs QMEP sessions in the summer to provide more opportunities for students to explore careers in medicine. Entry to the program is based upon academic performance and nominations from high school counselors and teachers.
Dr. Rachid Bendriss, professor of English as a second language, assistant professor of education in medicine, and associate dean for foundation, student outreach and educational development programs, said: 'QMEP allows high school students with an interest in the sciences and good academic performance the chance to glimpse all that a career in medicine has to offer, as well as allowing them to explore WCM-Q's state-of-the-art facilities and world-class levels of teaching. We hope that many of the inquisitive, intelligent and hardworking students who visited us during this session of QMEP will choose to join WCM-Q and go on to serve their communities as physicians, researchers, and educators.'

Sharjah trains hotel staff to better serve the elderly

The workshops are organised by the Social Education Department and the Sharjah Age-Friendly City Programme, affiliated with the Office of Age-Friendly Quality and Health Services. Sessions are being held in both Arabic and English to maximise impact. According to Asmaa Al Khodari, Director of the Office of Age-Friendly Quality and Health Services, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts that support Sharjah's membership in the World Health Organisation's Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities, reinforcing its position as an age-inclusive city. The aim is to raise awareness and preparedness among hospitality staff to offer high-quality, considerate service to elderly guests. This aligns with Sharjah's broader vision of building an inclusive, people-centric environment that improves quality of life and encourages elderly visitors to explore the emirate's diverse tourism offerings. Human values in hospitality Na'ema Al Zarouni, Director of the Social Education Department, emphasised that caring for the elderly is one of the noblest human and moral acts. She added that what makes the experience more positive is understanding how best to interact with older individuals and seeking the most appropriate ways to support them. Helping others, she noted, is one of the key sources of inner happiness and contentment. She explained that while her department has regularly conducted elderly care workshops, this is the first time sessions are targeted specifically at hotel employees. This move aims to encourage senior citizens to use hotel facilities with comfort and confidence. The workshops, offered in both Arabic and English, include interactive exercises and competitions designed to deepen participants' awareness and understanding. Key skills and attitudes One of the most important messages conveyed is the need for hotel staff to be aware of the specific needs of elderly guests and to approach them differently from other patrons. Staff should embody values such as compassion, kindness, empathy, patience, and tolerance — similar to how one would communicate with a child. It is essential to simplify information when speaking with seniors and to inform them clearly of potential risks to enhance their safety. Establishing a relationship of trust is also vital, so that elderly guests feel secure and well cared for — which ultimately improves their overall hotel experience and reflects the quality of service provided. Respect and appreciation for seniors Al Zarouni noted that ageing is a natural and inevitable part of life, through which people accumulate experience and wisdom. Respect and appreciation must form the basis of any interaction with the elderly, although many tend to overlook important aspects that could improve communication. She stressed that helping others benefits not only the recipients but also those who provide the support — spiritually, ethically, and socially. Al Zarouni affirmed that elderly people deserve honour and respect, as they hold a distinguished place in society. Islam has paid special attention to the care of older adults, considering their service and well-being as acts of goodness and blessing. She praised the UAE's efforts in this area, highlighting its strong legislative framework, including the Elderly Rights Law, which aims to protect their rights and ensure a dignified life for them as a cornerstone of the nation's social, cultural, and religious fabric.

Qatar enhances climate resilience through proactive measures

Doha: Qatar is advancing bold and coordinated actions to address the global climate change through comprehensive collaboration among government institutions, the private sector, and civil society. These efforts reflect the nation's strong commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. Environmental Specialist at the Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) Sultana Abdullah Al-Wajhan, highlighted Qatar's proactive approach during a recent appearance on Qatar TV. She emphasised the high level of inter-sectoral cooperation, noting that government entities have taken a leading role in shaping and implementing the National Adaptation Plan. 'Government sectors have demonstrated outstanding leadership in coordinating climate adaptation projects,' she said. 'As someone directly involved in these efforts, I can attest to the exemplary level of coordination.' She also recognized the increasing role of the private sector in climate resilience. 'Private entities are stepping up, actively participating in climate-related initiatives. Their growing involvement reflects a shared sense of national responsibility for mitigation and adaptation,' Al-Wajhan added. She pointed to several national initiatives that showcase this collective commitment. The Ministry of Municipality has launched a Climate-Smart Agriculture program to strengthen food security under changing climate conditions. Similarly, the Ministry of Public Health and Hamad Medical Corporation are enhancing the health sector's resilience to climate risks. Other vital efforts include biodiversity protection led by the Environmental Systems Protection Department and the Department of Nature Reserves and Wildlife under MECC. Furthermore, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) and the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) are promoting water reuse after treatment for irrigation of trees and landscaping and rationalization of electricity and water consumption through the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed). Addressing the importance of public engagement, Al-Wajhan stressed the need for collective environmental awareness. 'Community-wide awareness and participation are essential. When society works together, it fosters innovation and supports sustainable solutions, helping to build a more resilient future,' she said. Al-Wajhan also discussed the recent national workshop titled 'The Future of Climate Change in Qatar', which focused on advancing the National Adaptation Plan. The plan, under development by the Ministry for the past two years, aims to establish a unified strategy for climate resilience. 'The workshop's main objective was to define adaptation measures across priority sectors: water, public health, biodiversity, infrastructure and coastal resilience, agriculture and livestock, and energy and industry,' she explained. Stakeholders from each sector collaborated to classify and prioritize these measures, aligning them with Qatar National Vision 2030 and broader sustainable development goals. 'This workshop is not an isolated event; it is part of a broader, ongoing process to develop a comprehensive and inclusive national adaptation framework,' she said. As Qatar continues to assert its leadership in global climate action, these joint efforts highlight the power of national unity in confronting environmental challenges. Through such strategic initiatives, Qatar is laying the foundation for a sustainable, climate-resilient future. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) is committed to developing the National Adaptation Plan using a scientific and methodical approach that assesses climate vulnerabilities and their potential impacts. This process is carefully aligned with the country's priorities and national strategies for sustainable development. The workshop marked a significant milestone in advancing the proposed adaptation measures, which were formulated with input from government agencies, the private sector, academic institutions, and international partners. It served as a platform to review these measures, evaluate their readiness for implementation, and identify the necessary requirements to ensure their effectiveness and integration across all relevant sectors. © Dar Al Sharq Press, Printing and Distribution.
