Golf courses, skyscrapers, cryptocurrency: Trump family's Middle East business flourishes

Ahead of US President Donald Trump's Gulf visit next week, his son Eric was promoting his cryptocurrency firm in Dubai, while Don Jnr prepared to talk about 'Monetising Maga' in Doha.

Last month, the Trump Organization struck its first luxury real estate deal in Qatar, and released details of a billion-dollar skyscraper in Dubai whose flats can be bought in cryptocurrency.
In a monarchical region awash with petrodollars, the list of Trump-related ventures is long and growing. However, the presidential entourage is not the only party cashing in, analysts said.
'Gulf governments likely see the presence of the Trump brand in their countries as a way to generate goodwill with the new administration,' said Robert Mogielnicki of the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington.
If the president chose, he could hopscotch the region from one Trump venture to another when he visits Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates next week on the first foreign tour of his second term.

From Dubai's Trump International golf course, to a high-rise residential block in Jeddah and a US$4 billion golf and real estate project on Omani state-owned land, business links are not hard to find in the desert autocracies.

Could franchise model be way forward for rugby 7s? A new club-based event hopes to find out

With the HSBC SVNS Series undergoing another change in format and some unions cutting their rugby sevens programmes entirely, the sport has been facing an uncertain future. Tom Burwell, a former executive director of the Emirates Dubai 7s with 20 years' involvement in the sport, is the driving force behind a new professional sevens tournament based on seven franchises playing over the summer that will launch in 2026. With early seasons expected to be based in Europe before going global, Burwell, who is CEO of Bia Sports Group, which owns English Premier League side Sunderland, tells Josh Ball why the franchise model is the way forward and why some of the world's best players are already signing up to take part. Sevens tournaments are typically played over three days, but yours would be four hours once a week. Are shorter events the answer? 'The sport has often been challenged to be relevant week on week. During my time in Dubai, our interest was, how do we build the most successful three days possible here in the desert, and the important role we played within what was the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. 'But I don't think a huge number of fans were totally dialled into what would then happen in Cape Town the following week.

HKMA's strict stablecoin regime to shape Hong Kong's crypto future

Hong Kong's stablecoins ordinance, which took effect on Friday, puts cryptocurrency's most-traded cash substitute under the same regulatory framework as banks, triggering a rush for a limited number of licences from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). Advertisement Some market observers were caught by surprise after learning that the first batch of stablecoin licences was only expected to be issued early next year , as the regulator adopted a prudent approach to ensure the sustainable development of its digital asset initiative. The HKMA said on Tuesday that only 'a handful' of licences would be issued initially, to calm a hyped-up market. Since the beginning of this year the share prices of some companies have soared simply after suggesting plans to develop stablecoin operations, as the prospects of crypto and digital asset adoption become more mainstream. While the key benefits of stablecoins – digital tokens backed by fiat currencies or other reserve assets – such as cost savings, efficiency and transparency were established, the number of successful candidates could be limited due to the HKMA's stringent criteria aimed at making the city a leading digital asset hub, according to analysts. Many local, mainland Chinese, regional and global players have expressed interest in applying for stablecoin licences. Hong Kong crypto exchange OSL sees optimism rise as city enters stablecoin era

That assessment was made by Gary Tiu, executive director and head of regulatory affairs at OSL, at a symposium on Thursday about Hong Kong's stablecoin era. 'We will continue to build ecosystems and networks in this space,' Tiu said. 'We are the long-term partner for this space.' Stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency token that maintain a fixed value by being pegged to a reference asset, typically fiat currencies such as the US dollar. Heightened market anticipation around stablecoins was reflected in OSL's sale of existing shares, top-up subscriptions and new shares last Friday, when it raised HK$2.36 billion (US$300 million).
