‘Our voice will be louder': two UK Jewish movements to unite as progressive group

The Guardian18-05-2025
Two Jewish movements in the UK have united to form Progressive Judaism, embracing female rabbis, same-sex marriage and mixed-faith couples and representing about a third of British Jews who are affiliated to synagogues.
Liberal Judaism and Reform Judaism took the historic step of voting to unite at parallel meetings on Sunday. Each vote easily exceeded the required 75% threshold for the move, with about 95% in favour.
Ed Kessler, who chaired an advisory board overseeing the merger, said: 'This is the biggest change and most significant development in British Judaism since the second world war.'
Progressive Judaism would provide a 'voice and a space that brings together timeless Jewish tradition with the diversity and values of 21st-century Jewish life', he added.
It is the first ever merger of two Jewish denominations, and the first in any major religion for more than half a century.
Most British Jews are Orthodox, though the progressive tradition has grown over recent decades. Progressive Judaism will differ from the Orthodox tradition in its fundamental commitment to equality. About half its rabbis are women, and one in five are LGBTQ+.
Karen Newman, the chair of Liberal Judaism, said the new movement 'will manifest from day one its commitment to a Judaism that is non-dogmatic, inclusive and celebrates diversity in policy, prayer, and practice'.
Paul Langsford, chair of the Movement for Reform Judaism, said: 'As a unified movement, we will now be stronger, our voice will be louder and we will be able to bring even greater benefit not just to our own members, but to the whole Jewish community and wider British society.'
The merger has taken two years of consultations and negotiations, and will be formally launched in November.
Rabbi Charley Baginsky, of Liberal Judaism, said: 'We are now seeing the fruition of the next iteration of progressive Jewish history. Through this vote, our members are both standing on the shoulders of all those who came before us and creating something long and lasting for our children and the generations who come after us.'
Rabbi Jonathan Romain, head of the Rabbinic Court of Reform Judaism, said: 'There is so much division in the world, it is incumbent on faith groups to show that coexisting in harmony can be a reality to live out, not just an ideal to pray for. This merger is a great example of showing that differences can be overcome with a mix of commonsense and goodwill.'
The Reform and Liberal traditions are both Zionist movements, while believing it is not disloyal to criticise Israel. 'Within Progressive Judaism, diversity of views and voices – including around Israel/Palestine – are welcome and debate is encouraged,' said a spokesperson.
Jews made up 0.46% of the population of England and Wales in the 2021 census. More than half live in Greater London.

Letter: Malcolm Dean obituary

As a young researcher trying to understand the British media's obsession with social security 'scroungers' in the 1970s I came to appreciate the invaluable answers that the Guardian journalist Malcolm Dean gave to my endless questions. He was a crucial resource in my studies, later published in book form as Images of Welfare (1982). Over subsequent years we had frequent conversations, many of which surfaced, I'm sure, as 'academics are saying …' inserts into his social policy leaders. His own book, Democracy Under Attack (2011), was an informed insider discussion of the ways social policy matters reached public awareness through the media. His experience, knowledge and insight are much missed, and his generous contribution to my own understanding will always be deeply valued.

Cornwall Council to review its farms estate

An inquiry is set to take place into the future of Cornwall Council's 10,800-acre (4,370-hectare) farms estate as councillors have been told selling it could cut the authority's council agreed to a three-month study of the estate, which included 81 farms and aimed to help people enter the industry, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Dwelly, cabinet member for economic regeneration and investment, said he was told selling the farms could be the "number one thing" to reduce the council's £1.2bn told councillors: "My own hunch is there might be some new uses for some of the land, but I don't expect there to be a radical getting rid of council farms." 'Needs to be profitable' He told the council's sustainable growth scrutiny committee on 29 July: "I don't want people to pretend that's what's happening, as it clearly isn't going to be the priority for the administration to do that."The council's acting head of property, Jonny Alford, said that, since a 20-year farms estate strategy was introduced in 2019, some financial issues had arisen, with pressures on capital spending. He said: "The estate needs to be profitable and revenue returns are narrow. "Rents do not go up in line with costs, but costs go up in line with inflation."He said dairy farming was at the heart of the council's estate but was expensive to deliver on a small scale.A report to the committee suggested there could be alternative land use for its farms, including the provision of schools, housing and solar farms. Independent councillor Cllr Andrew Mitchell (St Ives West & Towednack) questioned whether the estate brought people into farming. "After five or maybe 10 years, they should be moving on to allow the next opportunity to happen for somebody."Mr Alford said that, since 2019, 12 farms had been re-let, two tenants moved to larger properties and eight new tenants were brought in. 'Food security' Reform UK councillor Roger Tarrant, who represents Redruth North, said there was "a significant and valid concern around food security".He told the committee: "It's important that we allow availability for food production in our county. Once those skills are lost, they're sometimes lost forever."He added: "It's important that we retain the county farms and we don't come up with an alternative where more housing requires more food." The capital programme for the farms estate is currently £16m, including £10m invested in farmhouses and other work. Liberal Democrat Luke Rogers (St Ives East, Lelant & Carbis Bay) said: "If we're spending £16m for 80 properties, that's resulting in about £200,000 per business unit. "Is it morally right for us as a council to be investing that amount on all of these businesses when we could be focusing on other businesses?"

Trump claims ‘woke' Jaguar is in turmoil

Donald Trump has accused Jaguar of being in 'absolute turmoil' following a 'woke' rebrand in which it ditched its big cat logo and embraced a new hot pink aesthetic. The US president contrasted the fortunes of Britain's Jaguar with American Eagle, a US clothing brand that recently saw its share price surge after debuting an advertising campaign with actress Sydney Sweeney. Mr Trump wrote on his Truth Social social media platform: 'Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em Sydney! 'On the other side of the ledger, Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement, THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER! The CEO just resigned in disgrace, and the company is in absolute turmoil. Who wants to buy a Jaguar after looking at that disgraceful ad.' Mr Trump's comments come days after Adrian Mardell, the 64-year-old boss of Jaguar Land Rover, announced his intention to retire. Under Mr Mardell, the car company sought to shake off its traditional image as a brand for 'Jag Men' and instead target a younger demographic. As part of plans to relaunch the brand, Jaguar last year debuted an advertising campaign depicting a bright pink, Mars-like landscape and catwalk models wearing unusual, brightly coloured clothing – but no car. The clip was widely mocked online. Jaguar has also ditched its jumping cat logo and last December debuted a 'Barbie pink' concept car at Miami Art Week. Critics have accused Jaguar of abandoning its core customers. Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, accusing Jaguar of going 'absolutely bonkers … showing a bunch of weirdos'. He predicted that the carmaker would 'now go bust. And you know what? They deserve to'. New Jaguars are currently unavailable in the UK as the carmaker prepares to launch an all-electric range next year. On Monday afternoon, Mr Trump said that Jaguar should have 'learned a lesson from Bud Lite, which went Woke and essentially destroyed, in a short campaign, the Company.' Two years ago, Bud Lite enraged Right-wingers in America and saw its sales plummet after it used transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in its marketing. Mr Trump said on Truth Social: 'The tide has seriously turned – Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.' His comments also came after it emerged that Ms Sweeney was a registered Republican. Records uncovered over the weekend show she registered with the party in June last year. Shares in American Eagle jumped 17pc after the president's endorsement. Jaguar Land Rover's sales dipped to £25.2bn for the year to March 31, down from £25.7bn a year earlier. The company said this was driven by 'the prioritisation of higher margin vehicles'. Last week, the company said: 'Adrian Mardell has expressed his desire to retire from JLR after three years as CEO and 35 years with the company. His successor will be announced in due course.'
