New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): The Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, will meet on July 11, 2025, at Parliament House Annexe in New Delhi, featuring interactions with legal experts and former officials.

Members are informed that the next sitting of the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, will now be held on July 11.
The agenda of the Meeting is interaction with Justice JS Kehar, former Chief Justice of India, on the said Bills. Interaction with Justice DY Chandrachud, former Chief Justice of India, on the said Bills.
Interaction with Dr EM Sudarsana Natchiappan, former Rajya Sabha Member, former Chairman of the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice and Senior Advocate on the said Bills.
Interaction with Dr Veerappa Moily, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, former Union Minister, former Chairman, 2nd Administrative Reforms Committee and former Chairman, Parliamentary Committee on Finance on the said Bills.
Earlier, Chairperson of JPC, ONOE, PP Chaudhary, held discussions with various stakeholders in five states, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh (Union Territory) over the issue of One Nation One Election. Meetings were held in Delhi, during which we had interactions with former CJIs UU Lalit, Ranjan Gogoi, former chief justices of various high courts and others.
Earlier, while speaking to ANI exclusively, PP Choudhary said, The committee believes that it should visit all states and hear their opinions, which is why the tour is being organised.
Reacting to the website launch, PP Chaudhary told ANI earlier that there should be 'transparency' and the entire Committee has agreed on this. 'There should be transparency. The entire Committee has agreed that we must keep transparency. The website will facilitate opinions from all the stakeholders. The committee took decisions on two major things, the advertisement will be printed in all languages so that all stakeholders can give their opinions.'
'Secondly, the website will facilitate inputs from all stakeholders... This is being examined by the Secretary General... The development of technology is taking time to ensure the website doesn't crash... The website will be launched soon with a QR code facility. Suggestions will be collected, and Parliamentarians will review them,' he added.
He further remarked that everyone has different opinions. 'There could be different opinions in the Committee too...One time will come when all the members will agree to it because all the leaders think for the nation and will agree over it for the nation's interest,' he said. (ANI)

Jaishankar arrives in DC, set to attend QUAD foreign ministers meeting
During the meeting, the leaders will build upon the discussions held during the last QFMM, which took place in Washington, DC on January 21 ANI US External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Washington, DC on Monday (local time). Jaishankar is on an official visit to the US at the invitation of US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to participate in the next edition of the QUAD Foreign Ministers' Meeting (QFMM), scheduled for July 1, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated in a press release. During the meeting, the leaders will build upon the discussions held during the last QFMM, which took place in Washington, DC on January 21. In the press release, MEA stated, "They will exchange views on regional and global developments, particularly those concerning the Indo-Pacific, and review the progress made on various QUAD initiatives in the run-up to the QUAD Leaders' Summit, which India will host. The Ministers are also expected to deliberate on new proposals to advance the shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific." Before arriving in Washington, DC, Jaishankar was in New York, where he inaugurated an exhibition at the United Nations on 'The Human Cost of Terrorism,' highlighting the need to expose state sponsorship of terrorism. Speaking at the inauguration of the exhibition on 'The Human Cost of Terrorism' at the UN Headquarters in New York, he said that "terrorism anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere." "A tribute to those who were taken away from us and remembrance lives shattered by discouragement, by our gathering, we express solidarity with the families and the loved ones of the victims of terrorism. The campaign is a stark reminder of the urgency of our shared responsibility to combat terrorism in all its forms," he added. Highlighting the exhibition's significance, he noted that "today's exhibition is not merely a presentation of images, videos and testimonies. It is a statement of our shared humanity. It is a gallery of human courage, each moment, each memory, each artefact, and every word tells the story of a life interrupted, altered or lost." Jaishankar emphasised the need for zero tolerance for terrorism, citing the recent condemnation by the UN Security Council of a horrific act of terrorism in Pahalgam. He said, "The world must come to some basic concepts: no impunity to terrorists, no treating them as proxies, and no yielding to nuclear blackmail.

Andhra Pradesh govt may refund ₹2,500 crore as HC strikes down hike in industrial power duty
The cash-strapped N Chandrababu Naidu government may have to foot a bill of about ₹2,500 crore as the Andhra Pradesh High Court has struck down an electricity duty levied on industrial and commercial establishments by the previous YSRCP government . The issue pertains to a duty levied on the sale of each unit of electricity. Under the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Duty (Amendment) Act, 1994, the state had levied 6 paise per unit of "electricity duty" on all consumers, except on power sold to the Centre and the railways. In 2022, the then Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government increased this levy to ₹1 for industrial and commercial users through a government order. Andhra Pradesh's textile and ferro alloys industries challenged this order in the court, terming it "discriminatory" to industry as these two industries are heavy consumers of power, which accounts for 50 per cent of their input costs. A bench of Andhra Pradesh chief justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and justice R Raghunandan Rao on Friday scrapped the government order through which electricity duty was enhanced. The order reads: "GOMs No 7, dated 08.04.2022 is struck down. However, the government is entitled to collect duty at the rate of 6 paise per unit, throughout the period from the date when Act of 2021 was published in the Gazette till such time as the rate of duty is modified, in accordance with law." Since the government order has been struck down, it will need to refund 94 paise per unit collected in excess from industrial and commercial consumers. A government source, who did not wish to be identified, told ET: "Industrial consumption of electricity is about 1,539 crore units per year. We will be calculating the dues per user. It will be about ₹2,500 crore." The government is weighing options, including appealing in the Supreme Court and adjusting future bills of consumers. Sri Anantha Laxmi Spinning Mills executive director Paani Kumar Samineni told ET: "The government collected 94 paise excess electricity duty for 18 months till different associations got a stay order from court. This order will help consumers in recovering these dues running into hundreds of crores." The enhanced duty was collected till October 2023.
