Fresh off his Bollywood playback debut in the Akshay Kumar-starrer Sarfira, singer
Sagar Bhatia
returned to Hyderabad for his third performance in the city. The evening was full of energy as the audience swayed and sang along to his qawwali songs. Speaking to
Hyderabad Times
, Sagar opened up about his musical roots, inspirations and the strong bond he shares with the city and its listeners.
'I've been drawn to qawwali since childhood'
Speaking about his musical roots, he said, 'I've always been drawn to this kind of music. Even as a kid, my voice had a certain depth, and I naturally gravitated towards qawwali,' adding, his journey has been shaped by two musical legends: 'Ustaad
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
sahab is a huge inspiration, I've learned so much from him. And then there's Gurdas Maan sahab. While qawwalis are usually performed seated, I like to stand and move with the music — that energy, I picked up from him. These two are like gods to me. What I do today comes from their influence.'

'The Hyderabad audience has always been incredibly energetic'
Talking about the city and its audience, he shared, 'Qawwali unites people regardless of caste, religion, or background. No matter where I perform, the crowd always joins in, and Hyderabad is no different. However, there's something uniquely special about this place. The audience here has always been incredibly energetic. This is my third performance in the city, and each time, their energy elevates the entire experience.' He also couldn't stop praising the city's food. 'I'm from Delhi, but there's something magical about Hyderabad's spices. I love spicy food, and every meal here is a full experience — I just can't resist it.'
'Spontaneity is the soul of every live performance'
Talking about his experience in performing live in India and abroad, he said, 'The stage often brings unexpected moments despite all the planning. I prepare for every tour, but things on stage often take a different turn. Once, during a show, I was performing a track called Biba and had also prepared some shayari for it. But the audience's energy was so infectious that I spontaneously came up with something completely new on the spot — Rukhte rukhte beh gaye na jaane kyun, woh mujhse itna sab kuch keh gaye na jaane kyun. Khwaab saare mere beh gaye na jaane kyun, woh mujhse itna sab kuch keh gaye na jaane kyun. Conclusion yeh hai ki hum toh buddhu ban ke reh gaye na jaane kyun. This entire piece was created in the moment, and the fact that people connected with it so deeply means the world to me.'
'We wrapped up the recording of Khudaya in just 45 minutes'
Reflecting on his playback debut Khudaya from Sarfira, he shared, 'It was my first-ever playback experience. That month, I was doing 25–26 back-to-back shows and was completely exhausted. I even told the director I didn't think I could sing. But he said, 'We need this grunge in your voice.' I gave it a try, and it turned out beautifully. I'm grateful to God and the entire Sarfira team, the whole process happened so naturally. In fact, we wrapped up the recording in just 45 minutes.'
Quotes:
When you sing a Bollywood or indie song, you're usually expressing a specific emotion or telling a story. But qawwali is something else, it's not just music, it's a form of devotion. You can offer it to your love, to God, to your parents, or to any belief you connect with. We don't limit it to one person or religion, and that's what makes it truly universal.

Dhanush condemns AI-altered 'Raanjhanaa' ending; claims 'concerned parties went ahead despite my clear objection'

Superstar Dhanush has come down heavily against the unauthorised re-release of his 2013 romantic drama Raanjhanaa, with an altered AI-reimagined ending. The re-edited so-called 'happy ending" version, has altered using artificial intelligence, was reportedly released without the creators' knowledge or consent and sparked an industry-wide backlash. Following in director Anand L Rai's lead, lead actor Dhanush took to his social media handles to express his disapproval about the use of AI. In a strongly worded note, he wrote, "The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection. This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. " Dhanush's Statement Expressing his concerns for the future of cinema, he urged for stricter regulations on the use of AI in movies. He wrote, "The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future." Anand L Rai's Statement Director Rai also issued a strongly worded statement, describing the past few weeks as 'surreal and deeply upsetting.' He said that the film was "altered, repackaged, and re-released without my knowledge or consent" and admitted that it has been "nothing short of devastating." Rai also stated that the new releases, strips the work of its 'intent, context, and soul,' and warned of the larger implications of tampering with artistic integrity through artificial means. 'To cloak a film's emotional legacy in a synthetic cape without consent is not a creative act — it's an abject betrayal of everything we built.' Bollywood Raises Objection To The Use Of AI The backlash has drawn significant support from filmmakers and writers such as Neeraj Pandey, Kabir Khan , Kanika Dhillon, Varun Grover , Renuka Shahane , and Tanuj Garg condemning the move and calling it 'unethical.'

‘Completely disturbed': Dhanush Slams AI-altered re-release of Raanjhanaa, says ‘not the film…'

Raanjhanaa, the 2013 romantic drama, starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, has been re-released in theatres with a new AI-assisted ending. But the movie's lead actor, Dhanush is not happy and has been 'completely disturbed' about it. 'The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an Al-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection. This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago. The use of Al to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists,' Dhanush posted on social media platform X. The AI-version of Raanjhanaa hit the theatres in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu, where Dhanush enjoys a tremendous fan following. It is not just Dhanush, but Raanjhanaa's original director and co-producer, Aanand L Rai has also reportedly publicly distanced himself from the re-release. 'I've to be very careful while signing the dotted line.' He added, 'AI is the future. Everybody knows that. But then use it for the future or for the present. Don't use it to distort the past!" Aanand L Rai told The Indian Express. A video of the AI-altered climax of Raanjhanaa movie, which recently went viral, shows Kundan(Dhanush) waking up from his deathbed, unlike in the original climax. Further, in the AI-generated climax, Kundan regains consciousness in a hospital bed, greeted by the tearful yet hopeful faces of his friends—played by Swara Bhasker and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub—offering quiet smiles through misty eyes. What follows is a poignant tapestry of childhood flashbacks: Kundan strolls through the soulful lanes of Banaras, hand in hand with his younger self, echoing the nostalgic visuals from the original film. But unlike the bittersweet reimagining, in Aanand L Rai's 2013 Raanjhanaa, the story ends in tragedy—Kundan breathes his last after a political rally, sealing his fate with sacrifice. The AI release of Raanjhanaa is being promoted as a way to offer the audience a 'happy ending' to the original story, mentioned a report by IE. The production house, while announcing the release of the AI-assisted movie stated that the AI-assisted ending of the movie is a 'respectful creative reinterpretation'.
