Laurence Fishburne Felt ‘Really Dejected' After Doing '40 Takes' of an ‘Apocalypse Now' Scene Talking About Sex at Age 14
Fishburne, who later reunited with Coppola for 'Rumble Fish,' 'The Cotton Club,' 'Gardens of Stone,' and 2024's Razzie winner 'Megalopolis,' said during the Apple TV+ documentary 'Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood' that while filming 1979's 'Apocalypse Now,' his own lack of real-life 'sexual experience' impacted his acting ability.

Fishburne was age 14 when he was cast in the film; a scene cut from the original theatrical release (and later re-added in Coppola's 2001 redux cut) included Fishburne's soldier character detailing sex. However, Coppola did not find Fishburne convincing. A source close to production told IndieWire that Fishburne misrepresented his age in his audition to land the role. IndieWire has reached out to Fishburne's representatives for additional comment.
'There's a scene in 'Apocalypse Now' that got cut from the original film, and then it's been put back in the redux,' Fishburne said, from The Hollywood Reporter. 'I was 14, 15, whatever, trying to do this scene talking about sex and I had no sexual experience. Like, none.'
He added that Coppola 'couldn't figure out how to get me to be any more experienced than I am' and kept 'asking me to do it over and over again.'
'I did something like 40 takes. It was really bad,' Fishburne said. 'And I could tell that he was disappointed. So I was feeling really, really down, really dejected.'
It was Fishburne's co-star Martin Sheen who helped him overcome the scene. 'I heard Martin whisper in my ear, he said, 'Did anyone ever tell you you were a really good actor?'' Fishburne said. 'And I said, 'No.' He said, 'You're a really good actor.''
According to Fishburne, Sheen 'saved [his] life,' saying of Sheen, 'That's what being No. 1 on a call sheet is about for me.'
The acclaimed 'Apocalypse Now' was, at the time of its release, deemed by many to be a commerical failure, despite tying for the Palme d'Or at Cannes and receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Coppola reflected on the film's legacy during an anniversary event in 2019.
'The avant-garde of yesterday is the wallpaper design of today,' Coppola said about negative reviews. 'Some of the greatest artists of their day, we may have never heard of them. But the 'failures' like Van Gogh or Rousseau, who had to take his paintings around in a wheelbarrow — you'd give your eyeteeth now to have those paintings. The things you get fired for when you're young are the same things you get Lifetime Achievements for when you're old.'

‘Avatar: Fire & Ash' Trailer Leaks Online: James Cameron Returns With Fiery Stunner
The action-packed first trailer for James Cameron's next Avatar fantasy epic has leaked online — and the footage looks spectacular. Disney is rolling out the trailer for Avatar: Fire & Ash 'exclusively' in theaters in front of Fantastic Four: First Steps. And just like with Christopher Nolan's 'only in theaters' trailer for The Odyssey early this month, grainy unauthorized copies have begun to circulate. But give some credit to Disney here — the Fire & Ash trailer is, at least, a bit tougher to find than the trailer Nolan's Universal film was, with copies being taken down as fast as they pop up. Fan site The Sietch of Sci-Fi said the trailer 'looks incredible.' Another raved that the trailer was 'some of the most beautiful footage I've seen all year [and I was] struck by the real sense of doom and rage — fist fights inside of cosmic volcanoes, heroes terrified, huge aerial battles.' While another entertainment writer wrote, '[The trailer] started out as 'meh, more of the same' and ended with 'yup, another billion to James Cameron.'' And a film critic wrote: 'The visuals are (somehow) on another level. There is no doubt in my mind that this WILL be the biggest movie of 2025, and 'epic' doesn't feel like it does this trailer justice.' The trailer introduces two new tribes, the Wind Traders and the fire-hurling Ash People clan. The footage shows (trailer spoilers here — if that's a thing) plenty of intense arial fighting between Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his Na'vi family, the Ash People clan and, of course, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang, now sporting dramatic white, black and red warpaint, suggesting he might have made an alliance with the Ash People). At one point, a captive Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) is warned by a new villain, Varang (Oona Chaplin), 'Your goddess has no dominion here.' Sully — who warns, 'we cannot live like this' — is taken captive and paraded by the occupation forces. And Spider (Jack Champion) seems like he's in jeopardy quite a bit. The first Avatar, released in 2009, became the highest-grossing film of all time, raking in $2.9 billion globally. The first sequel, 2022's The Way of Water, charted as the third-highest-grossing movie of all time (with $2.3 billion), beating expectations and silencing doubters that the Oscar winner could pull off another Avatar blockbuster. At this point, few doubt Cameron's ability to generate massive box office returns with the Avatar franchise and confidence is high that Fire & Ash will deliver when its released as a major holiday tentpole on Dec. 19. While a run time hasn't yet been announced, Cameron has teased that Fire and Ash 'will be a bit longer' than The Way of Water. The last film was three hours and 12 minutes. 'In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of [Way of Water],' Cameron recently said. 'The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren't drilling down enough on character. So I said, 'Guys, we've got to split it.' [Fire & Ash] will actually be a little bit longer than [Way of Water].' Cameron plans five Avatar films and has said he intends to direct them all, as well. Much of the footage, Cameron has said, has already been shot. Avatar 4 is set for Dec. 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 will arrive Dec. 19, 2031. Cameron also hopes to adapt the Charles Pellegrino books Ghosts of Hiroshima and Last Train From Hiroshima as soon as his Avatar schedule permits. The film would focus on the true story of a Japanese man during World War II who survived the atomic blast at Hiroshima as well as the explosion in Nagasaki. If it comes to fruition, it would mark Cameron's first non-Avatar film since 1997's Titanic. Fire & Ash cast members include Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Bailey Bass, Jemaine Clement and David Thewlis. The official description of Fire and Ash: 'Jake and Neytiri's family grapples with grief after Neteyam's death, encountering a new, aggressive Na'vi tribe, the Ash People, who are led by the fiery Varang, as the conflict on Pandora escalates and a new moral focus emerges.' The One Thing ‘Superman' and ‘Fantastic Four' Can Agree on? Origin Stories Are Over
[Editor's note: The following article contains some spoilers for both 'Superman' and 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.'] It long ago became a familiar refrain for both this writer and plenty of other critics, journalists, film fans, and superhero stans: We're done with origin stories. And while the ever-expanding nature of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the spruced-up DC version requires the seemingly constant addition of new heroes and new stories, which, in turn, mean more movies and TV shows that chronicle how these super-beings came to be, it's time to call time on those heavy-hitter origin tales. That's a lesson that both of this summer's big superheroic releases — James Gunn's delightful DC franchise reset 'Superman' and Matt Shakman's less successful MCU entry 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' — both intrinsically understand and honor. Both films open after our titular heroes have become, well, heroes. Gunn's film not only opens after his Clark Kent (David Corenswet) has crash-landed on Earth from his native Krypton, but also after he's come to terms with his powers, grappled with growing up in Smallville, become Superman as we know him, moved to Metropolis, gotten a job at the Daily Planet, met Lois Lane, told Lois Lane who he is, and set about saving the world one squirrel at a time. That's a tremendous amount of ground to cover and more than enough for its own film — or, as we've seen over the past 87 years the hero has been in the zeitgeist, more than enough for multiple films, TV series, shorts, radio plays, even a musical, and a little thing called comic books — and is simply not required anymore. Jumping into the Superman story in medias res doesn't mean that we're robbed of enjoying the building blocks of how something came to be, but that we get to enjoy the story from a different starting point. Seeing how Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan in Gunn's film) reacts to discovering that Clark and Supes are the same person? That's not nearly as interesting or fresh as watching her grapple with that dichotomy, over and over, and in different situations. Similarly, Gunn's film doesn't push any superhero-to-superhero meetings on the audience; instead, when Superman joins a fight alongside the so-called Justice Gang, we get to observe relationships that are already in place. What a relatively small touch — hey, these people know each other — that pays off big time. Gunn and company are in the midst of something of a DC reset, which affords them the opportunity to take on seemingly risky things like 'not having to remind us that Superman is literally from space and also Clark Kent,' but even before this new iteration of DC screen lore, Warner Bros. was starting to dip its rubberized wings into less origin-centric superhero stories. Matt Reeves' 'The Batman' (which is, and we're getting deep here, not actually part of the overall DC superhero franchise, but is its own thing, called the quite-chewy 'Batman Epic Crime Saga') similarly works off a baseline understanding of the Caped Crusader (Robert Pattinson). And while, yes, Bruce Wayne's beloved dead parents and their horrific deaths are included in the film, it doesn't play out as a traditional origin story. Consider it a happy side effect of the film's earliest incarnations, when Ben Affleck was going to direct and star in his own Batman movie, after his Bruce had already been 'introduced' in other DCEU films. For once, development hell has rewards. Much like 'Superman,' Shakman's 'Fantastic Four' opens four years (you get it, right?) after the titular superhero family was turned into cosmically powered individuals after a spaceflight gone bad. Because of the alternate Earth the fab four inhabit, the energetic opening of Shakman's MCU film not only gets to show off the superhero clan, but the retrofuturistic world they protect. It's the highlight of the film, a zippy and genuinely fun way to introduce the group (including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn) within the confines of their kitschy planet (which is also, incidentally, filled to bursting with citizens who adore them). Cleverly packaged as a TV chat show introduction to the famous group, Shakman finds the space to introduce the heroes, their world, and even show off some of their exploits (from befriending Mole Man to vanquishing, as best we can tell, a bunch of super-smart apes). For fans of the comic book heroes, it's an opening full of classic storylines and some 'hey, I get that reference!' nods. For newbies, it's a whiz-bang trip through lore that sets up the story to come. Mostly, it's refreshing. Consider this year's other MCU entries, including 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'Thunderbolts,' both of which require a high level of franchise knowledge to really stick, including the consumption of multiple movies and TV shows (and, and this is essential, a solid memory when it applies to all of them). If you're an MCU fan, that's a lot of time spent to 'get' a film or two. If you're just a casual watcher of the movies, it's nearly insurmountable. Let's stop that now. 'Superman' and 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' lead the way. That's heroics we can get behind. Both 'Superman' and 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' are now in theaters.
