New Bishop of Crediton Moira Astin aware of Devon's 'challenges'

BBC News03-06-2025
The Church of England's new Bishop of Crediton, The Venerable Moira Astin has said she is aware of the "challenges" facing people in Devon.Ms Astin, from Surrey, is currently the Archdeacon of Reigate in the Southwark Diocese. She will take over the role from the Right Reverend Jackie Searle who announced her retirement after holding the position since 2018.She will be made Bishop of Crediton at a ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral next month, and said she was looking forward to "praying with and encouraging" people in the county.
'Tough times'
Ms Astin said: "Devon is such a beautiful place and yet as all places, it has its own challenges. As I've been driving around in the past week, I've seen signs about trying to get rid of the family farm tax."I've visited Ilfracombe and seen some of the challenges of a seaside town, some of the poverty that we have there."The church is rightly at the heart of this. Providing support, being there for people in the tough times, and most of all, speaking of the love of God. "That even when life is difficult, God is still there and still caring."
'Amazing geology'
Ms Astin studied Geology at Clare College, Cambridge, before turning her sights to church ministry."[I am excited] to again see the amazing geology of some areas of North Devon, like the Hartland Peninsula and the Valley of the Rocks, near Lynton."And to discovering the places where our British Christian forebears worshipped." she said.As part of the Diocese of Exeter, the Bishop of Crediton serves the whole of Devon but with a stronger emphasis on North Devon, Mid Devon and East Devon. There will also be a service of welcome for the bishop-designate on Sunday 6 July at Exeter Cathedral.

Woman's death exposes need for ME care reforms

The UK government has pledged to overhaul care for individuals with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), acknowledging that many currently struggle to access appropriate support. This commitment follows the death of 27-year-old Maeve Boothby-O'Neill, who died from severe malnutrition due to ME, prompting a coroner to highlight systemic issues. The inquest into Miss Boothby-O'Neill's death revealed a critical lack of specialist beds, 'extremely limited' training for doctors, and insufficient funding for ME/CFS research and treatment. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is set to publish a new plan outlining steps to improve patient care, including new training for NHS staff and investment in research. While public health minister Ashley Dalton welcomed the plan, the charity Action for ME criticised it for not going 'far enough,' advocating for a dedicated, funded research hub to find treatments and cures.

How Buckingham Palace lobbied government for a new royal yacht

Newly released official files reveal Buckingham Palace 's discreet attempts to influence the Conservative government's decision on replacing the Royal Yacht Britannia in 1993. Despite public claims of neutrality, senior courtiers privately urged Prime Minister John Major to issue a statement highlighting the yacht's "inestimable value" to secure support for a new £50 million vessel. Cabinet Office officials rejected this lobbying, warning such comments would be "highly prejudicial" and expressing scepticism about the Queen's asserted "indifference" to the yacht's future. The Palace's efforts included a "splendid lunch" on board Britannia for senior government officials, aimed at showcasing the yacht's value to UK business. Although the Major government eventually pledged a replacement if re-elected in 1997, the incoming Labour government reversed the decision, leading to Britannia's decommissioning and the Queen's visible emotion.
