Mako Vunipola was given brutally honest reality check in harsh Lions tour moment

Warren Gatland's tough love approach had a significant impact on Mako Vunipola during the 2021 British and Irish Lions Tour.
The Saracens icon, who currently plays for French club Vannes, had an impressive international career, although 2021 was challenging for various reasons. The Sarries' relegation to the second tier of English rugby and an achilles injury that kept him out of the opening weekend of the 2021 Six Nations proved to be hugely challenging for the prop.
Consequently, he reported for the Lions' tour of South Africa out of shape. Gatland was unimpressed with Vunipola's fitness upon joining the squad.
It wasn't long before the former Wales head coach delivered a stark message any elite athlete would respond to. Having played a key part in the Lions clinching a 22-17 win over South Africa in the first test with his impactful scrummaging off the bench, Vunipola's performance proved instrumental for the tour.
Gatland went on to open up about the frank exchange he had with Vunipola before the first test. He said: "We have been really pleased with Mako.
"And I was really honest with him and just said, 'Mate, I didn't feel when you came into the squad that your fitness levels are as good as they should be for international rugby.'
"He agreed with me and we have changed a bit of his scrummaging technique and him coming off the bench at the moment - he has made a huge impact. He has scrummaged exceptionally well, carries great, is a great defender and we will see what happens over the next few days." Vunipola wasn't present at the Lions' Jersey training camp during its initial phase, but he still pursued his own conditioning drills in private. Following Gatland's frank remarks, Vunipola disclosed his efforts to enhance his physical readiness.
He said: "Fitness is something I've always had to try and keep on top of since I started, really. It was obviously a step up, coming into the Lions camp having not been in for the first week of Jersey.
"I knew that condition-wise I was in good hands with the strength and conditioning staff and the medical staff to get me to a place where I'm able to help the team. It's one of those things where there are no shortcuts, it's just hard work, extras off the field with the team around me." His stellar performance in the first test earned him a spot in the starting line-up for the second, which saw South Africa triumph with a decisive 27-9 scoreline. Vunipola was left out of the XV for the third test, but, mirroring the first match, he came on as a substitute and aided the Lions in clinching a 19-16 win.
He concluded the tour with nine successive test match appearances, marking his final stint with the Lions. Vunipola bid farewell to international test rugby in January 2024, retiring with 79 caps for England under his belt.
Throughout his career, the Kiwi-born star clinched the 2016 Six Nations Grand Slam and was part of the team that made it to the 2019 Rugby World Cup final.

Dunne takes another F2 podium and narrows gap to leader

Irish racer Alex Dunne (Rodin Motorsport) took another podium place in this season's F2 Championship securing the runner-up spot in today's Budapest Sprint Race where the Clonbullogue teenager fought out a thrilling final lap duel with Spain's Josep Maria Marti (Campos Racing). Although Dunne remains fourth in the championship, he has narrowed a pre-race 11-point deficit to series leader Leonardo Fornaroli (Invicta Racing) to seven points. Polesitter Marti made a great start but Dunne was eclipsed by British driver Arvid Lindblad, who made it a Campos Racing 1-2. As the race progressed Lindblad closed on team mate Marti with Dunne third as the top three pulled out a gap over the chasing pack headed by Victor Martins. Although Lindblad went ahead at Turn 1 on Lap 8, Marti retook the lead on the switchback. Their duel allowed Dunne and Martins to close. At the beginning of Lap 19, Dunne, who had waited patiently before filling the mirrors of Lindblad, dived inside the Briton at Turn 1 to move into P2. Lindblad then came under pressure from Crawford as Marti and Dunne went 4.7s clear of the pack. The Safety Car was deployed on Lap 22, to allow Sebastian Montoya's car to be removed from the main straight. When racing resumed Lindblad regained third. A slight error from Marti at T5 allowed the hard-charging Dunne to within an overtaking manoeuvre as they went wheel-to-wheel on the final sector with Marti just about holding off the rapid Offaly driver as they crossed the finish line just 0.225s apart. Crawford was third. At the post race press conference Dunne said:"I think Pepe made a bit of a mistake into T5 and I kind of had my hopes up a little bit, hoping that there was an opportunity, but no, I think he defended it pretty well I tried to go around the outside of 13 and there wasn't quite enough room to make it happen, I think that's just how it goes that's racing. It was a fun battle I think I managed my tyres through the race." On regaining second place, he added: "I felt like that's something I have always been good at through the year, going in late on the brakes and making those types of moves. I felt like the pace was strong but I think Arvid was kind of pushing quite hard and being stuck in the DRS of Pepe but not quite enough to be able to overtake. To be honest, I got bored of just sitting there saving tyre the whole race so I pushed two laps to try and get close and I saw an opportunity so I just went for it." Following the conclusion of the race Arvid Lindblad and Luke Browning (who had finished fourth and fifth) both received post-race penalties dropping them to a respective tenth and twelfth. Dunne will start tomorrow's Feature Race from P9. F2 Championship Positions: 1. L. Fornaroli 127 points. 2. R. Verschoor 125 points. 3. J. Crawford 122 points. 4. A. Dunne 122 points. 5. L. Browning 113 points. 6. A. Marti 96 points.

Ireland come from behind to beat Scotland in World Cup warm-up

Ireland kicked off their World Cup warm-up campaign with a gutsy, come-from-behind 27-21 win over Scotland at Virgin Media Park in Cork. Ireland had the better of the opening exchanges as their defence flying off the line and making big hits, with back rowers Grace Moore and and debutant Ivana Kiripati in particular starting the game on fire. However, an inability to hold onto the ball and build phases meant they had to rely too heavily on their defence. Scotland, who begin their Pool B campaign against Wales in three weeks, ran to a 14-0 lead thanks to Lisa Thomson converting her own score and then adding the extras to Lucia Scott's finish after the winger ran a lovely inside line around the edge of the ruck. Ireland's Sam Monaghan is tackled by Lana Skeldon of Scotland. Pic: INPHO/Ben Brady It was an emotional return to the field for Ireland captain Sam Monaghan, who played over 30 minutes in her comeback after over a year out with injury. She did well in her cameo and nearly crashed over for a try as she begins easing herself back into play ahead of the World Cup. Scotland hooker Lana Skeldon was stretchered off after suffering a serious-looking injury as the 81-cap Bristol forward was in obvious discomfort as she received lengthy on-field treatment eight minutes short of half-time at Musgrave Park. Ireland's Sadhbh McGrath scores a try with Clíodhna Moloney-MacDonald and Brittany Hogan. Pic: INPHO/Ben Brady Skeldon's departure disrupted the visitors' momentum and Ireland capitalised. They began to build up some much needed phases and off the back of a dominant scrum, started to turn the tide in their favour. After several knocks on the Scottish try line Sadhbh McGrath crashed over to get Ireland's first try of the game and then only a few minutes later Ireland worked their way back up to the Scottish 22 line and after some great handling, Meabh Deely ran in unopposed as Ireland were just two-points behind heading into the break. The hosts, who were back in action for the first time since ending the Six Nations with a 26-19 defeat to the Scots in April and start the World Cup against Japan on August 24, completed the turnaround within six minutes of the restart when debutant centre Nancy McGillivray dived over. Ireland debutants Ailish Quinn, Ivana Kiripati and Nancy McGillivray celebrate. Pic: Shauna Clinton/Sportsfile McGillivray alongside centre partner Eve Higgins really shone in the second half as it looks like Ireland are beginning to build that depth Scott Bemand has been talking about since coming in. Flanker Grace Moore was then held up on the line as Ireland continued to dominate in the wake of Scotland replacement Coreen Grant being sin-binned. Centre Emma Orr burst through the home team's defensive line to briefly put Scotland back in front, with Thomson slotting the conversion. Scotland's defence was immense at times in the second half as time and time again they were able to stand firm on their own line and not let Ireland cross. However, Ireland for their own part had some discipline issues in terms of breaking the laws and also being disciplined with protecting the ball. Fiona Tuite of Ireland is tackled by Chloe Rollie of Scotland. Pic: Shauna Clinton/Sportsfile However Ireland got their act together in the final 15 minutes thank to some great performances from substitutes Niamh O'Dowd, Fiona Tuite and Linda Djougang. O'Dowd seemed to be everywhere on the pitch and played so positively, getting her hands free and offloading at any opportunity. She crossed over for a well deserved try to give Ireland the lead again with just over 10 minutes to go. Ireland, who host Canada in Belfast next weekend, secured victory three minutes from time when Deirbhile Nic a Bhaird crossed, ensuring Scotland go into the World Cup on the back of successive defeats following last week's loss in Italy. Pic: Shauna Clinton/Sportsfile Speaking post-match, Player of the Game Grace Moore spoke about Ireland's build-up to this match and what it was like to finally get out there. 'Our captains run this week was so good and our jersey presentation was probably one of the most emotional we've had so far in my career and I think we've really bought it for those girls that weren't out here today. 'This is just the start, those weeks of preseason, the hard slog, people coming back from rehab. It's just testament to who these people are and we're just looking forward to the World Cup and looking forward to grow.' Ireland Head Coach Scott Bemand celebrates winning the match. Pic: INPHO/Ben Brady Head Coach Scott Bemand was happy to finally get back onto the pitch and wipe the cobwebs off before the World Cup. 'It's first game after preseason. You kind of got to get your straps back in a test match arena after seven weeks build-up. I think we probably looked like we hadn't played a game last week, whereas Scotland came out and looked like they had a game. So they were slightly more battle hardened than us, but I was really pleased with the girls. There was no sense of panic. We understand what we need to do and how we're going to do it and they simply just moved through the gears. 'Next week we've got Canada coming. The challenges keep coming fast now and then hopefully that puts us in a good space to go over to England and attack the World Cup.'
