Big wheel to return despite resident's plea
An observation wheel in a public garden has been granted planning permission for another year despite a plea to give the park "back to the people".
Councillors at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) voted unanimously to allow the Royal Windsor Wheel in Alexandra Gardens.
Resident John Davey opposed the application, saying the garden should be "full of flowers, plants and wildlife" and "not forfeited to metal fairground rides".
But council planning officers said under the plans less than 5% of the total grassland would be damaged, and the site would be re-turfed afterwards.
They added that, when the wheel was in the park last summer, it left "plenty of garden area amenity area untouched by this development for members of the public".
Planning officer Briony Franklin also said the council had to be consistent in deciding planning applications, and had approved identical temporary plans last year.
Ward councillor Mark Wilson spoke in favour of the application and said it was an "attraction" for the town.
"It's a boost for business and while there are mixed views as we've heard from residents many do enjoy it," he said.
Councillor Amy Tisi said the wheel would take up about 0.5% of the park.
"It seems to be a very emotive thing that some residents say it's taking up all of the park and it's taking up all of this space," she said.
"I calculated that the site is 21 by 7m, so it works out to be 0.52% of the park is taken up by this."

Beyoncé fans brave scorching heat for Houston hometown kickoff of 'Cowboy Carter' tour
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is to set to light up Houston during the next stop of her "Cowboy Carter" tour. And fans are already braving scorching temperatures to witness the hometown opener. The Grammy-winning singer will launch her first concert in her hometown of Houston at NRG Stadium June 28. The show will mark her first Southern stop on her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour. She is poised to perform two nights only on June 28 and June 29. From the United States to Europe, Beyoncé and her fans have powered through severe weather conditions, including an evacuation, cold temperatures and pouring rain to experience her concerts. In Houston, it was the heat they had to beat with the first show landing on a scorching 91-degree day. Despite this, fans swarmed the stadium grounds ahead of the show--some lining up early to secure spots in the VIP pits and others enduring the sun for a chance at merchandise. Bridget and Meghan Ryan traveled to Houston from Wisconsin to see Beyoncé in concert for the first time. After several flight delays and scheduling hiccups, the sisters were determined to snag official merchandise ahead of Saturday's show. Like many other fans, they ended up standing in a long line in the heat. "We're both from the Midwest, so the humidity is a little extra than what we're used to. I figured staying hydrated would be a good plan,' said Bridget Ryan. "I think it was a come hell or high water kind of situation. Whatever the weather was going to do we were going to show." Their determination didn't stop there. "We even talked about if we don't get any today after sitting outside maybe we'll come back tomorrow and try the truck again,' Meghan Ryan said. The H-Town stop comes after Beyoncé wrapped the international leg of her tour – first with a six-night stint in London, followed by three dazzling nights in Paris. Of course, Beyoncé first debuted her "Cowboy Carter" tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with a 39-song set list. Her shows have been filled with family, fashion, different music genres, and most notably country music and cultural commentary. As fans know, Beyoncé first debuted her "Cowboy Carter" tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with 39 songs on the set list. Why Everyone Is Booking These Overwater Villas in the Maldives Right Now
In the world of luxury travel, few experiences rival the serene, dreamlike beauty of staying in an overwater villa in the Maldives. Suspended above crystal-clear turquoise lagoons and surrounded by untouched natural splendour, these villas offer a rare combination of indulgence, privacy, and awe-inspiring scenery. It's no surprise that travellers from all over the globe are making a beeline for these floating sanctuaries. Whether you're celebrating a honeymoon, planning a once-in-a-lifetime getaway, or just seeking some well-earned rest and rejuvenation, overwater villas in the Maldives offer the perfect escape. With the rise of wellness travel, remote working, and experiential getaways, the appeal of these villas has only grown — and here's exactly why. There's something inherently magical about waking up to the gentle sound of the sea beneath your feet. Overwater villas allow you to do just that, blending barefoot luxury with the calming rhythm of the ocean. These villas are perched on stilts directly above lagoons, with panoramic views that stretch endlessly into the horizon. Imagine stepping out onto your private deck, the morning sun sparkling on the water, and diving straight into the lagoon for a refreshing swim. It's a level of intimacy with nature that very few accommodations in the world can provide. Add to that modern comforts like plunge pools, glass floors, and in-villa dining, and you have an experience that's both wild and refined. In the first few moments of arriving at one of these villas, it becomes clear why everyone is choosing to stay in stylish and spacious Maldives luxury villas. They're more than just a place to sleep — they're destinations in themselves. In today's fast-paced world, privacy is the new luxury. Overwater villas are typically spaced well apart from one another, ensuring that your time away is truly yours. Unlike crowded resorts or hotels with thin walls and shared facilities, these villas offer the rare luxury of complete seclusion. Many travellers today are looking to disconnect from the stress of daily life — even just for a few days — and there's no better place to do that than in a villa set in the middle of the ocean. With direct lagoon access, your own sundeck, and often an infinity pool, you may find little reason to leave your villa at all. Even better, most luxury resorts in the Maldives cater to this desire for exclusivity with dedicated butlers, private dining experiences, and in-villa spa treatments that let you unwind without ever seeing another soul. From Instagram influencers to professional photographers, overwater villas in the Maldives have become iconic backdrops for stunning visuals. Their sleek architecture, combined with vibrant marine hues and cotton-candy sunsets, make every angle picture-perfect. For many, the opportunity to capture that idyllic image — lounging on a deck over water, framed by palm trees and sun-kissed waves — is reason enough to book the trip. And in an age where photos are part of the travel experience, these villas deliver moments worth a thousand likes and more. But beyond the snapshots, what keeps visitors returning is the authenticity of the experience. It's not just a social media post; it's a deeply immersive and revitalising journey that often marks a highlight in their lives. While overwater villas are often associated with romantic getaways, they're surprisingly versatile. Many of them are now being designed to accommodate families with children, with added safety features, connected rooms, and even kid-friendly in-villa activities. Solo travellers also find these villas incredibly appealing. Whether for a personal retreat, wellness-focused travel, or even remote working, overwater villas provide the perfect peaceful setting to think, create, and relax. The Maldivian hospitality culture plays a big role in this. Resort staff go out of their way to personalise each stay, ensuring that whether you're there with your loved one or exploring the world alone, you'll feel both welcome and cared for. One of the Maldives' greatest assets is its thriving marine ecosystem, and staying in an overwater villa gives you front-row access. You don't need to join a tour to see exotic sea creatures — just look over the edge of your deck, and you might spot stingrays, reef sharks, or a kaleidoscope of colourful fish. Many villas even feature glass-bottom floors or viewing panels so you can enjoy the underwater world from the comfort of your bedroom. For snorkelling and diving enthusiasts, this close proximity means you can plunge into coral gardens within moments, turning each morning into an aquatic adventure. Wellness has taken centre stage in travel, and the Maldives has responded beautifully. Overwater villas frequently come with options for private yoga sessions, wellness consultations, or even outdoor spa treatments overlooking the lagoon. There's something inherently healing about being surrounded by water, breathing in the salty air, and falling asleep to the lullaby of gentle waves. Many guests report feeling not only physically rejuvenated after their stay but emotionally and mentally recharged as well. Dining becomes a spectacular experience in these villas. Breakfasts are delivered by boat, floating trays of tropical fruits, pastries, and fresh juice drifting up to your private terrace. Dinner can be a candle-lit affair under the stars, with a private chef preparing your meal just a few feet from the sea. The Maldives is known for its fusion of flavours, blending South Asian spices with global gourmet trends. Whether you're vegan, pescatarian, or a full-fledged foodie, the menus at these resorts are tailored to every palate, and the setting only enhances the taste. With climate concerns on the rise, travellers are seeking more sustainable luxury options — and the Maldives is leading the way. Many overwater villas are now being constructed using eco-friendly materials and are powered by renewable energy sources like solar power. Resorts are also investing in coral regeneration programmes, ocean conservation efforts, and partnerships with marine biologists. Staying in one of these villas isn't just a treat for you — it's a contribution towards protecting one of the world's most fragile ecosystems. The rise of digital nomads and hybrid workers has reshaped how and where people travel. What better way to join your Zoom calls than from a shaded overwater deck with the ocean behind you? Overwater villas in the Maldives are increasingly being fitted with high-speed internet and work-friendly spaces, giving professionals the opportunity to blend productivity with paradise. Work-life balance has never looked so good. The Maldives might seem remote, but it's more accessible than ever. With direct flights from major hubs and seamless transfers by seaplane or speedboat, you can be relaxing in your villa within hours of landing. What makes the experience even more special is the attention to detail and personalised service provided at every step. From the moment you're greeted at the airport to your farewell boat ride, you're treated with a level of care that makes your stay unforgettable. Overwater villas in the Maldives aren't just trending — they've become a symbol of escape, elegance, and emotional renewal. In a world where travel is more meaningful and intentional than ever, these luxurious hideaways offer everything you could wish for: breathtaking nature, personalised luxury, and a deep sense of calm. So if you've been dreaming about it, maybe it's time to stop dreaming and start planning. Because once you experience this kind of magic, the only question left will be: why didn't I book this sooner? TIME BUSINESS NEWS

Canadian tourist Dorian Christian MacDonald, 38, found dead after ‘drowning accident' on Dominican Republic beach
A Canadian tourist was found dead in the water at a Dominican Republic resort in what loved ones described as a drowning accident last week. Dorian Christian MacDonald was last seen walking along the beaches of Puerto Plata just after 2 a.m. during his solo trip to the northern coast of the Caribbean Island on June 20, according to CTV News. MacDonald was staying at a hotel in the resort town of Maimon Bay when he went for the overnight stroll — an hour before police received calls reporting him missing. 5 Dorian MacDonald was found dead in the waters of the Dominican Republic on June 20, 2025. Tara McKenzie/Facebook The 38-year-old's body was discovered in the water during high tide just after 4 a.m., the outlet reported, citing local officials. An official cause of death wasn't announced, but a family friend reported that MacDonald had drowned. 'Dorian died suddenly in a drowning accident. He was only 38 years old. And now, the world feels a lot quieter and a whole lot less vibrant just knowing he's no longer a part of it,' Tara McKenzie wrote on a GoFundMe. 'The painful reality is now facing the unthinkable task of trying to bring him back to Nova Scotia in a timely manner—to his Mom, his sisters, his family, his people. As much as we know how much he loved DR, we need him home,' McKenzie added. The fundraiser is intended to raise money to bring MacDonald's body back to Canada. 'We don't get to even begin saying goodbye properly or grieve as we should until then,' McKenzie said. 5 MacDonald was staying at a hotel in the resort town of Maimon Bay when he went for the overnight stroll — an hour before police received calls reporting him missing. McKenzie paid tribute to her 'brother from another,' sharing 80 photos and text messages of the two dating back to 2016. 'I didn't want to ever have to write this.. So I don't know what exactly to say yet…I'm definitely still massively in denial that a presence as infectious as yours could actually be truly gone from this world…You were a part of my life, past, present and I prayed future…' she wrote in a Facebook post. MacDonald's death is the latest involving tourists to strike the Caribbean nation's beaches. University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki disappeared while swimming during her spring break trip to Punta Cana in the early hours of March 6. The 20-year-old was with Joshua Riibe, a St. Cloud State University student, at the time. The couple had met at the beginning of the trip. Riibe, 22, was detained by authorities and questioned in Konanki's disappearance. 5 Tara McKenzie and Dorian MacDonald pose in an undated picture. Konanki's body has not been recovered.
