"Such good English": Liberia says not offended by Trump gaffe to president

Monrovia (AFP)Liberia's president was "honoured" to meet US counterpart Donald Trump this week and wasn't offended by Trump's comment about his fluency in English -- his mother tongue -- Liberia's foreign minister said on Friday. The US president's gaffe has even inspired a catchy tribute song in the west African country, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti told AFP on Friday evening.Trump praised President Joseph Boakai on Wednesday on his English-speaking skills, apparently unaware that English is the official language of Liberia. Responding to remarks Boakai made at a White House mini-summit alongside the presidents of five mineral-rich, French-speaking countries in west Africa, the US leader said: "Such good English... Where were you educated?" Boakai -- who, like most Liberians, speaks English as a first language -- laughed uncomfortably and replied he had been educated in his home country. "We were honoured by the White House's invitation to President Boakai for a meeting with President Trump and fellow African leaders," Nyanti said. "No offence was taken."She said Liberia was keen to strengthen ties with the United States, "built on mutual respect". Liberia is the oldest republic in sub-Saharan Africa. It was founded in 1822 when the American Colonization Society, funded by the US Congress and slaveholders, began sending freed slaves to its shores. Thousands of "Americo-Liberian" settlers followed. They declared independence in 1847 and set up a government to rule over the native African majority. English is the official language and the most widely used throughout the country.

Family seeks US probe after Palestinian-American killed in West Bank

A 20-year-old Palestinian-American man has been killed in an Israeli settler attack in the occupied West Bank, his family said on Saturday, demanding that Washington launch a probe into his death. Saif al-Din Kamil Abdul Karim Musalat was beaten to death on Friday in Sinjil, a village north of Ramallah, the Palestinian health ministry said. Musalat's family said his death was "an unimaginable nightmare and injustice that no family should ever have to face." "We demand the US State Department lead an immediate investigation and hold the Israeli settlers who killed Saif accountable for their crimes. We demand justice." The US State Department on Saturday confirmed to AFP that an American citizen had died in the West Bank and offered its "sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones on their loss". The department "has no higher priority than the safety and security of US citizens overseas," a spokesperson said, referring "questions on any investigation to the Government of Israel."

Israeli strikes hit homes, water point and displacement camp, killing 29

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli air strikes on Sunday killed at least 29 Palestinians, including six children near a water distribution point. The attacks came with apparent deadlock in a week of indirect talks in Qatar between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas for a ceasefire in the territory. Civil defence spokesman Mahmoud Bassal told AFP that Gaza City was hit by several strikes overnight and in the early morning, killing eight, "including women and children" and wounding others. An Israeli air strike hit a family home near the Nuseirat refugee camp, south of Gaza City, resulting in "10 martyrs and several injured", Bassal said. In central Gaza, six children were among eight people killed when a drone "hit a potable water distribution point in an area for displaced people" in the Nuseirat camp, he added. Several other people were wounded, he said. In the territory's south, three people were killed when Israeli jets hit a tent sheltering displaced Palestinians in the coastal Al-Mawasi area, according to the civil defence spokesman.

Exclusive: Gaza talks at risk after Israel refuses to withdraw from Rafah

Hamas negotiators are increasingly sceptical that a Gaza ceasefire agreement with Israel could be reached in the current round of talks in Doha, Middle East Eye has learned. Sources close to Palestinian negotiators said talks remain deadlocked over at least two of four key issues. The first is the extent of the proposed Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip during the 60-day truce. The second is the method of aid distribution. The United States has reportedly proposed postponing discussions on these two points and instead focusing on the names of Palestinian prisoners to be released by Israel in exchange for the remaining Israeli captives. However, Palestinian negotiators believe this approach is a trap.
