FortisBC to issue call for power to help meet energy demand in the Southern Interior
New electricity generation projects will help meet customers' growing energy needs and support economic development KELOWNA, BC, July 3, 2025 /CNW/ - FortisBC Inc. (FortisBC) is planning to launch a call for power later this year as the next step to its Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEOI) issued in 2024, to support economic growth and help meet customers' growing electricity needs in communities across the Southern Interior region. The call for power will be conducted by way of an invitation-only competitive process, with organizations that were selected through the RFEOI process being invited to participate. This initial call for power is one of the next steps in FortisBC's work to expand its electricity system and increase power generation in the region by working with companies that can deliver local power and Indigenous communities in the Southern Interior. "By supporting local power projects and working with Indigenous organizations, we can expand electricity generation to ensure homes and businesses in the Southern Interior have the energy they need." said Joe Mazza, vice president of energy supply and resource development. "This call for power is an important step in delivering safe, reliable and affordable energy—driving economic development and strengthening communities for the future." In 2024, FortisBC issued an RFEOI for new power to identify projects from lower carbon and renewable 1 sources in British Columbia that could add up to 1,100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy supply for its approximately 190,000 electricity customers by 2030. Through the RFEOI, FortisBC received more than 80 submissions representing about 20,000 GWh of electricity. The call for power is the next step in FortisBC's work to increase power generation in the region and includes two key components. Firstly, FortisBC recognizes the importance of economic reconciliation and projects must have a minimum of 25 per cent Indigenous equity ownership. Therefore, it is seeking submissions with comprehensive Indigenous participation plans. Secondly, in the call for power, FortisBC will focus on wind projects that can directly connect to its electricity system in the Southern Interior and provide energy in winter months when customer demand for power is highest. This targeted competitive procurement process will enable FortisBC to focus on projects that align closely with its strategic objectives of acquiring energy to address its immediate needs to meet high demand for electricity during the coldest days of the year. FortisBC may issue additional calls for power in the future. The Government of British Columbia recently passed legislation to modernize permitting and regulation of renewable energy projects. The new legislation establishes the BC Energy Regulator as the single window for permitting renewable energy projects in accordance with strict environmental standards. This legislation and upcoming regulations could help bring more power to FortisBC's customers faster. All levels of government must confirm Alstom Thunder Bay plant as builder for TTC subway cars contractor
THUNDER BAY, ON, July 3, 2025 /CNW/ - Unifor is demanding all three levels of government make an open and official commitment to ensure jobs for workers at Unifor Local 1075 at the Thunder Bay Alstom plant are secured with a deal to build future TTC subway cars. "We don't understand the hold up. Unifor has been patiently waiting for all three levels to sign on and commit to these important manufacturing jobs for Canadian workers – but so far, we haven't seen any ink on paper," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "The federal and provincial governments as well as the City of Toronto have committed the necessary funding and publicly declared their support for a sole-source procurement to Alstom in Thunder Bay. " If Alstom is awarded the contract, Unifor members would build the 55 new subway cars, intended to replace the current cars on the Bloor-Danforth line, which will reach their 30-year life service line next year. The federal government has indicated its support for the transit to be build in Canada, at the Thunder Bay facility including in Nov. 2024 when it announced $758 million in federal funding to support this transit project. In April, Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged Toronto to have its subway cars manufactured at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay and to consider a sole-source deal with Alstom to support provincial workers, amid Donald Trump's ongoing trade war. At that time, Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria sent a letter to Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow requesting the procurement be sole-sourced to Alstom Thunder Bay. In June, Chow announced her support for the sole-source procurement to Alstom in Thunder Bay. In response to U.S. tariffs, Toronto had already moved in March to bar American firms from bidding on contracts. "And yet here we are, still waiting with workers at Thunder Bay facing layoffs. If there was ever a time to use Canadian procurement dollars to support Canadians and, in this case, Canadian-built transit it is now," said Payne. "We need procurement policies to match the intentions we have been clearly hearing from our political leaders." In January, Ontario committed to spend nearly $500 million to refurbish 181 GO Transit bi-level rail coaches, which is expected to support hundreds of jobs for at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay. "With the ongoing trade war, Made-in-Canada has never been so important," said Unifor Unifor Local 1075 President Justin Roberts. "Our members are highly skilled and ready to build this transit. This should be a no-brainer given the times we are in. Let's get these subway cars built here at home." VANCOUVER, BC, July 3, 2025 /CNW/ - The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) today published guidance about regulatory concerns with certain asset or business acquisitions – primarily taking place in venture markets – including concerns with misleading disclosure that could constitute market manipulation. The guidance relates to reporting issuers that distribute a significant number of securities to acquire assets or businesses that appear to have little or no actual value or operating history, and paying what appear to be significantly inflated prices. CSA Staff Notice 51-366 Regulatory Concerns with Certain Asset or Business Acquisitions explains the regulatory concerns with these types of acquisitions and reminds issuers of the requirements that may apply. It does not introduce any new requirements. Key regulatory concerns with these transactions include: The potential for misleading disclosure or misrepresentations in a reporting issuer's continuous disclosure record. A potential lack of a reasonable basis for the value ascribed to the asset or business being acquired. Potentially untrue or unbalanced promotional campaigns to support the acquisition. Whether a reporting issuer records all or a portion of the consideration paid as intangible assets or goodwill based on unreasonable or unsupportable assumptions, and impairs them shortly after the acquisition. Staff will continue to apply additional regulatory scrutiny to reporting issuers involved in acquisitions that appear to raise the concerns set out in the staff notice.
