Kenya private sector activity slows in June, slowest level in a year
NAIROBI, July 3 (Reuters) - Kenya's private sector activity slowed in June with its biggest contraction in close to a year, driven by slower consumer spending and the impact of protests during the month, a business survey showed on Thursday. The Stanbic Bank Kenya Purchasing Managers' Index fell to 48.6 from 49.6 in May. Readings above the 50.0 mark indicate expansion in business activity while those below show contraction. The contraction was the sharpest in 11 months, the survey showed. "Weaker conditions were primarily driven by a solid contraction in business activity. Survey respondents attributed this decline to lower customer spending, challenging economic conditions and operational disruptions from protests," Stanbic Bank said in comments accompanying the survey. In the last week of June, thousands of Kenyans participated in protests, initially called to mark the anniversary of anti-government protests last year, but then amplified by public anger over the death during the month of a blogger in police custody. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said at least 10 people had been killed during one day's unrest when youth-led demonstrations were followed by looting and arson in Nairobi and other cities. The rights group Amnesty Kenya said at least 16 people were killed, all by gunshot, which it said was suspected to have been fired by police. "The dip in activity was due to output and new orders contracting because of weaker consumer spending, challenging economic conditions, and social protests reappearing in June," Christopher Legilisho, Economist at Stanbic Bank.

Iconic car brand to ‘cut 400 jobs' despite saying it has ‘no plans' to end production in UK
AN iconic sports car manufacturer is reportedly considering axing 400 jobs after saying it had no plans to end production in the UK. The factory set to lose 30 per cent of its work force in Norfolk has been open since the 1960s. 4 4 Lotus has reportedly become the latest car manufacturer to look at slashing its UK workforce. The move comes after the brand held emergency talks and fellow motor manufacturer Nissan said it would be slashing 250 jobs from one of its UK sites. A report in the Daily Mail claims that the sports car specialist is considering cutting 30 per cent of jobs at its plant in Hethel, Norfolk. Of the 1,300 staff at the site up to 390 could now be facing down the prospect of losing their job. A decision on the job losses is expected from the brand in the next few months. Recent reports that the brand was considering closing its factory in Hethel and moving production to the US were denied by the firm. Majority owned by Chinese carmaker Geely, Lotus adamantly rejected the claims, saying in a statement: "The UK is the heart of the Lotus brand—home to our sports car manufacturing, global design centre, motorsport operations, and Lotus Engineering. "It is also our largest commercial market in Europe. "Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory. "We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market. The modern classic Lotus Elise "We have invested significantly in R&D and operations in the UK, over the past six years. " Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage." The reports of imminent closure however sparked intervention by the government with company executives meeting business secretary Jonathan Reynolds. The meeting on Sunday, June29, reportedly saw the group discuss possible support measures. 4 4 Fears were raised that the brand would fall victim to Donald Trump's import tariffs. These were reportedly not addressed by the news that the tariffs would be reduced from 27.5 per cent to 10 per cent. The Dalai Lama has announced that his reincarnation and successor will be chosen without any role from China's Communist Party. This decision goes against Beijing's past claims of control over the process. While the Dalai Lama has confirmed he will reincarnate, he did not say when or where. His video statement was shown to senior monks in Dharamshala. The Dalai Lama currently lives in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, in Himachal Pradesh. 'I hereby reiterate that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has sole authority to recognise the future reincarnation; no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter,' the spiritual leader said in his statement. Now, China is likely to get offended by the Dalai Lama's strong statement. Beijing has long tried to influence Tibetan religious matters. The Dalai Lama earlier said he would speak about his successor around his 90th birthday. On July 6, the 14th Dalai Lama will turn 90. However, the issue has been debated for decades. Chosen as the 13th Dalai Lama's reincarnation as a baby, he became the leader in 1939 when Tibet was free from China. However, the Chinese army took control in 1950. The Dalai Lama first worked with Mao Zedong, the legendary leader of the Chinese Communist Party. Later, after a 1959 uprising, the religious leader fled to India. In 1995, 6-year-old Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was recognised by the 14th Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama, the second most important spiritual leader in Tibetan Buddhism. Three days after the selection, the Chinese government took Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his family into custody. Nobody has seen or heard of them ever since. China picked its own Panchen Lama, Gyaincain Norbu. The Chinese Communist Party wants its members to be atheists though this rule is often ignored. At the same time, it insists on controlling top religious leaders. Earlier this week, Xinhua promoted the old 'golden urn' method to choose new lamas. Qing emperors used the method to control Tibet from 1720. An editorial by the Chinese state media strongly opposed the Dalai Lama's right to choose his successor. 'The reincarnation of Tibetan Buddhist Living Buddhas has never been decided by reincarnated individuals. This principle applies particularly to the Dalai Lama reincarnation lineage,' Xinhua wrote on July 2. 'The reincarnation of Living Buddhas is by no means merely an internal religious matter, nor is it solely the "unique predestined bond" claimed by the 14th Dalai Lama,' it added.
