Assassinated leaders Farooq and Lone believed dialogue was the best way: Mirwaiz
'The political foresight that both these leaders exhibited, their faith in resolution of the Kashmir conflict through dialogue, which they saw as the best means to end lingering uncertainty for the people of J&K and as the catalyst for ensuring peace and stability in the region, is once again acknowledged by the world as the way forward. Hope India and Pakistan pay heed to it,' the Mirwaiz said, in a statement.
The Mirwaiz paid tributes to his late father and also remembered Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone Sahab and the '70 innocent mourners who died in the Hawal massacre on the same date.'
Painful memories
'21st May is upon us, and painful memories are revived. Quaid-e-Kashmir to his people, Mirwaiz Molvi Mohammad Farooq was on this day taken away from them by gunmen, his distraught mourners sprayed with bullets, leaving seventy dead. Even after 35 years, the vacuum his death created is present, more keenly felt with each passing year. His guidance is deeply missed,' the Mirwaiz said.
J&K PC chief Sajad Lone spoke about the loss of his father. 'He (Mr. Lone) sacrificed his life in pursuit of his dream for peace. Those were even darker days than today. Speaking the truth often invited retribution. I remember when he died, we called him the Martyr to Peace. Never in these 23 years has the need for peace dawned on us as it has in the last thirty days,' Mr. Lone said.
'May those who killed him burn in hell, and may all those cowards who kill non-combatants, civilians, and innocent tourists burn in hell,' Mr. Lone added.
Former J&K chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti, also paid her tributes. 'Today marks the solemn death anniversary of Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq Sahab & Abdul Gani Lone Sahab. Two prominent Kashmiri figures known for their efforts to promote peace and dialogue in the region. Their deaths remain a tragic reminder of the heavy cost of violence in the region and the urgent need for peace and reconciliation,' she said, in a post on X.

J&K set to create ripples with ‘hydropower tourism'
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah (Pic credit: PTI) SRINAGAR: J&K's Omar-Abdullah-led government has started dipping its toes in 'hydropower tourism' with plans to allow hydel electricity generators to set up on-site tourism facilities as an incentive to attract more investors into such projects. J&K's Draft Hydro Power Policy, 2025, proposes tourism infrastructure in hydel projects up to 25MW. A senior official said the infrastructure could include hotels, parks, guesthouses, and water sports facilities The draft policy, reviewed earlier this week by chief minister Omar, will soon be released for public feedback. The policy assumes significance after the Centre put Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan in abeyance following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Omar's National Conference (NC) has long opposed IWT, calling it detrimental to J&K's interests and arguing that it ceded control of river waters to Pakistan without consulting the region. Such tourism facilities will be allowed to be set up only after hydel projects up to 25MW go on stream. 'The policy clearly says after the main hydropower project is completed and begins operating, they can apply to build tourism infrastructure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pirates Climb Aboard Cargo Ship - Watch What The Captain Did Next Tips and Tricks Undo The aim is to increase income and support local economic growth,' the official said. The incentive has been limited for projects up to 25 MW as they typically come up on small streams and offer good tourism potential, while larger hydel plants are located on major rivers with little scope for ancillary amenities, the official explained. J&K has an estimated hydropower potential of over 20,000MW but less than 15% is harnessed. Govt expects good response to the new policy. The official cited Ranjit Sagar Dam (also known as Thein Dam) at Pathankot in neighbouring Punjab as an example, pointing out that the area, with lush gardens and scenic surroundings, had turned into a popular picnic destination. 'J&K's upcoming hydropower projects offer similar tourism potential,' the official said. While hydropower developers in J&K will be required to provide 12% of the generated electricity free to the Union territory under the new policy, the obligation will remain suspended during the initial years to ease the burden on developers. Developers will be allowed to retain all tourism revenue from the start, without no sharing with govt. However, after 40 years, developers must hand over the 'hydel project' and 'all related tourism infrastructure in good operating condition' to govt. The draft policy categorises projects into two segments, up to 25MW, and between 25MW and 100 MW. It proposes waiver of water usage charges for all projects, classifying them as 'non-consumptive users'. Developers will also benefit from carbon credit incentives and receive 100% exemption on registration fees and stamp duty on land purchases, leases, or mortgages related to the projects.

TRF Echoes Pakistan Foreign Minister's Protest Of US Ban On Terror Outfit
Last Updated: This clearly exposes the synergy between Pakistan's diplomatic machinery and its terror proxies, said sources Hours after Pakistan's foreign minister and deputy PM Ishaq Dar expressed disagreement with the United States' ban on the TRF, the terror outfit issued a statement opposing the decision. The Resistance Front justifies its armed resistance in Jammu and Kashmir as a lawful and necessary response to what it describes as the 'unlawful Indian occupation". The TRF claims that its designation as a terrorist organisation by the United States is unjust and influenced by Indian pressure on American institutions. The group maintains it is a legitimate, local freedom movement fighting against the so-called 'Indian occupation" of Jammu and Kashmir, rejecting the terrorist label. It asserts that the US and other powers label Kashmiri groups as terrorists out of frustration. TRF's statement rejects the US decision, framing its struggle as a rightful liberation from an oppressive Indian regime. Top intelligence sources reveal that the TRF is not an indigenous movement but a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba. 'The timing of the TRF statement, issued just hours after Ishaq Dar criticised the US designation, clearly exposes the synergy between Pakistan's diplomatic machinery and its terror proxies, confirming state-sponsored narrative warfare," said a source. The TRF has been involved in targeted killings of civilians, migrant workers, and minority communities in Kashmir. This is evidenced by confessions, forensic recovery of weapons, and intercepted communications with handlers in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, said sources. Financial trails tracked via hawala and crypto channels link TRF operations to Pakistan-based facilitators, confirming that the group is part of a hybrid warfare doctrine combining terror and propaganda, they added. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 22:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
